It was mentioned in today's testimony that it wasn't linked to a bank account, they don't say 'paypal' specifically. It has been mentioned in past testimony as well. I am confident that it was not connected to any other financial institution. JMO
Thanks and that makes sense because QB's isn't a financial institution, but PayPal transactions can be imported to Quickbooks online.

right lol When I first googled, I clicked on the first one, it came back as Hawaii ... I have checked numerous (more than I have linked lol) others after listening to all the testimony and they all come back as San Diego.

It's almost like someone put it there on the top of the google search ...:eek::eek::D:D

I'm not saying it can't be done Karinna... but there is zero evidence showing it was, not from prosecution witnesses and not from the witness today.

Hmmm, how is my IP address determined if I log on to something via data in my phone account?

But it doesn't affect what Merritt did from the QB accounts anyway just before and after the murders.
The PayPal stuff is to do with DK isn't it?

No clue, and I'm sure we are going to hear more about all of this in other testimony. Maybe the computer expert will tell us more tomorrow? On video!!! lol

I just scuffled around in Google and it looks like it’d be related to the physical address of the cell tower you’d be using. Makes sense.

Or, if someone habitually used a VPN, the IP number could be anywhere, right?

yeah, I was just looking too lol I was looking specifically for AT&T because I am pretty sure that is what cell company Dan was with at the time (from testimony). From what I am reading, there were blocks of numbers that were used for AT&T cellular internet access back then (I set my date to 2010), and yes, they changed.

I have thought of VPN's as well.

Hope we find out more tomorrow :) or later today haha I'm up way past my bedtime!

At the end the judge told the jury there would be no more days off or half days, so yay on that. See you all tomorrow.

It’s only taken 4 months to get tough. Let’s see how long this stance lasts though as the judge does love a dentist appointment or two.

I had a look at the 3rd party user thing

It's for developers.

You add the paypal username of the person you want to grant API access

I punched in the number to Infosniper and it literally produced nothing. I was wondering the same, if the number is connected to a provider and not a location. I could totally see DK using a VPN.

Would the IP information provided today be the same as it was in 2010?

The "IP" part of IP address stands for "Internet Protocol." The "address" part refers to a unique number that gets linked to all online activity you do...somewhat like a return address on a letter you'd send out. (All this happens in milliseconds.)

That's the end of today's lesson. At least it should be.

Because from this point on, it gets complicated fast. And confusing. Information technology (IT) is crazy stuff and it's best left to those who have to deal with computers and networks.

Still, we're all on the Internet these days, and it seems we're always connected through our personal computers, laptops or mobile devices. And every time you go on the Internet, an IP address is right there, working for you.

And with so much obscure information (and misinformation) out there about the IP address, it's helpful to know the basics.
6 Basics Things to Know About IP Addresses

If you are on a mobile device, does your IP address change depending on your location, or is the IP address for the user always the same, even when away on vacation?

From the link i just posted

So long, IP address. It was nice while it lasted.
When you're at home, an IP address is assigned to your computer by your Internet service provider (think Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, or AT&T). Since they are the ones giving you access to the Internet, it's their role to assign an IP address to your computer. Your Internet activity goes through them, and they route it back to you, using your IP address.

But don't get attached to it. Don't tattoo your IP address to your arm, because it's not really yours. Even at home it can change if you do something as simple as turn your modem or router on and off. Or you can contact your Internet service provider and they can change it for you.

You can't take it with you

contnd.
Plus, if you go on vacation and take along your laptop, your home IP address doesn't go with you. It can't, because on vacation you'll be using another network to connect to the Internet.

So, when you're at a coffee shop in another city or state (or just down the road) and you're using their WiFi to get your email, you're using a different (and temporary) IP address, one assigned to your laptop on the fly by the ISP for that coffee shop's Internet provider.

Same thing happens when you travel. As you move from the airport to your hotel to the local coffee house, your IP address will change each and every time.

But you don't have to think about it at all, or open the hood of your computer and flip switches. It all happens thanks to the intelligent design behind the Internet, wireless networks and all those Internet Protocols your computer uses.

It seems like we have two locations for the IP in question, Hawaii and San Diego. Also, in doing the briefest research on Google, it would seem that "location" information regarding IP addresses is often highly inaccurate. Addresses have been known, at times, to be listed in major databases in 6 different states (and two separate countries.)

There is much information out there on the internet and, of course, one can choose what one wishes to believe. Hard to know, in my opinion, even when "experts" testify, because that often seem to be orienting their testimony to whichever "team" they're testifying for/being paid by. However, from I've seen on the internet, I don't trust the IP address info.

Just some thoughts.

ETA: I looked at quite a few articles on this subject, but here is one which has quite a bit of information on the IP location issue:

I do somewhat agree, that's why I said I would wait for an expert. But only that one site came back as Hawaii, all the others have said San Diego, and there are numerous others (more than I posted links to). From the little bit of looking that I did, the IP's change as well. Dan could have been using a VPN, but then... in my experience with a VPN, I don't use it to show where I normally reside, I use it to give an anonymous IP addy somewhere random lol or to access something out of country.

I am hoping we will hear more today one way or the other, computer dude La Rock should be able to testify about that? IMO
