Heartbroken for his family. I hope if that is the case, John will realize that disappearing isn't the answer and come back to his family. I just find it strange that if he went voluntarily missing he would stay close and go to lands end in broad daylight. And even if he did disappear voluntarily, couldn't he still be considered in danger? I hope they don't stop looking.

Yes, the Lands End in broad daylight is a puzzle. But without the Instragram photo, no one would know he had actually been there. So I think he figured he wouldn't be traced. Little did he know...!!!

Disappearing voluntarily but being in danger afterward is the delicate balance LE runs into in these cases. How far do they go when they have no solid evidence of harm? It's very frustrating for both LE and families. So families have to keep the ball in the air to help LE out.

Most departments in this area are overwhelmed with cases, with not enough detectives to go around. My husband is a former detective, and I remember him talking frequently about frustrating cases in which leads were drying up, or where the evidence was pointing to no actual crime having been committed (e.g. in the case of someone who ran away). He hated to back burner cases, but with so many other active cases to tend to, he couldn't devote all of his energy to such cases. They would stay on his mind though, and I know he'd always be on the lookout for something new (especially if another case he worked on wound up creating a lead for the cold case).

With the limited information we have, I do believe as well that he left voluntarily. We know he deceived his wife into thinking he was going to a meeting, and then hopped on BART (with his hat and glasses case hidden in his folder that "should" have contained paperwork). He researched in advance a route for that day's trip. And he's seen in two photos, hours apart, in locations indicated by those internet searches, and he was alone. Nothing points to foul play, from what we've seen. And given his immense legal/financial troubles, it would make a lot of sense that he might think disappearing (and/or committing suicide) would lift the burden not just for him but for his family. I know that the proceedings will continue anyway... but when you've reached such a breaking point, emotion can very easily trump logic, even for the smartest people (my dad also committed suicide, so I've witnessed this with him).

My fear is that John intended to end his life. The area he visited is known for such things. Even the Lands End Labyrinth, where someone claims they spotted him that afternoon, has seen such activity. A person's body, once in the ocean, can easily be carried away/under, never to be seen again (or it could be weeks/months before it resurfaces).

That said, until he's found -- in any condition -- it's great for people to keep an eye out for him in case he decided to just purely run away. The PD may have exhausted all of the leads up to now. But the family can certainly keep the search alive in the hopes that a new promising lead will materialize, that would give the PD something to work with.

I hope answers are just around the corner for the family, and that John is brought home to them soon.
BBM

Thank you for another terrific post, Dani. I've bolded a few points that jump out at me. I appreciate your LE perspective as well as that of the daughter of someone who committed suicide (I'm so sorry :( ).

I think John's family has feared suicide from close to the beginning, even though it's hard for them to imagine. I hope they won't have to wait for answers. Keeping the search alive is likely their only choice at this point.

So that's it? Give up and go home? Nothing to see here?

I have a feeling his hardworking family and friends won't be giving up anytime soon. Here's to hoping he is found soon.

As quiet as its been that's what I've been thinking all day.
I came in late last night & was catching up & by the last post by JoyM I thought maybe he'd been found & that it was her way of telling us to back off so to speak then she signed out never to return. I hope I'm wrong but the silence is sure loud.

The thoughts & opinions stated above are that, MY random thoughts & opinions.

Ha! :) I think it's more wait and see what the family wants to do next. It's a lull and it's quiet but we're still here.

Just heard from the woman who had posted on FB that she may have seen him near the beach. She was the one whose post was a bit confusing because she stated she lives at Lands End but she also stated that she lived at Lands End. I reached out to her because we have a friend in common. She got back to me today and I am attempting to put her and the family in touch. I am not going to say what she saw and let police and the family figure that out but I thought I would let you WS folks know (and get a bump for John's thread).

Following up: She posted a couple of times on FB about the time you posted here this morning asking them to contact her. They've responded several times as recently as about 11:30 a.m. saying that they've tried to contact her and asking her to message them or email. I hope she has.

Something just came to mind for me. John is Medicare age so I am assuming he is drawing Social Security Benefits. Something the family may not realize is the fact that Social Security deposits money automatically into your account until they are notified you are deceased. So if John is missing voluntarily, what happens to his money if no one knows if he is alive or not?

If John's SS check continues to go into his account without notifying SS he is missing, and it proves he has been deceased all along 6 months or a year from now, then the family would owe a bunch more money back to the government because he would not have been entitled to those benefits.

On the other hand, if he is still alive and just off the grid, that is still his money to collect. Do you see where I am going with this? His disappearance could add even more debt onto the wife!

Sort of a Catch 22 for the family I think. I wonder what the law states? Not that it is any of my business what sort of SS check he gets......I just don't want the family to have more heartache if SS says "give me back my money" somewhere down the road.

Just found this article:

http://sfist.com/2016/02/23/alameda_man_implicated_in_get-rich-.php

"Beck's brother, Stephen Beck, nonetheless defends Beck's character, calling the government's case overzealous and calling him "an absolute straight arrow," adding that if he did choose to take his own life for his wife and family's benefit, that "sounds like something he would do."
Our thoughts go out to his family, as well as hope that he will still turn up."

Also there's also post note in the article with the following advice:
If someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide: do not leave the person alone; remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt; and call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.

Also this article, about the lack of working security cameras on BART trains...
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BART-s-fake-train-cameras-no-help-in-case-of-6849990.php

"Alameda police, who are investigating the missing-person case, did not request video from trains — only stations, said Alicia Trost, BART spokeswoman.

That’s because BART police told Alameda investigators that the train’s cameras “were inoperable,” said Lt. Jill Ottoviano of the Alameda force.
Trost said BART police pulled video from a variety of stations, as Alameda police requested, to help determine which direction Beck may have been headed. Some of the station video is still waiting at BART for Alameda police to review, she said."

I would imagine with the PD changing the status of Johns case, it had a profound affect on the family, friends, and helpers.

Two weeks to the day that he went missing, and they are forced to face what they have feared from day one, except now they have no legal officials helping. This would be a powerful blow.

This family and their friends have done an outstanding job of getting his name out to the public. Someone must have a little PR knowledge. I highly commend them for their efforts. The lack of finding John up to today is not due to them sitting around letting LE do all the work. They have truly given the search more than I have ever seen by a family.

I hope John is safely found. The love all these people have shown him may be the key to make him believe in his world, again.

I did hear from the FB Missing John Nelson Beck crew today about their attempts to connect with the woman on FB who might have had the possible sighting. They were responsive and I have done my best to connect them although I am unsure if that ultimately happened.

I can only imagine that this is an exhausting process and the further they get into the process the less they might be saying for various reasons unknown to us.

The most important thing is that us WS folks are here and ready to help when they are ready for more brain power. And that we hold out hope that the answers come as soon as possible for all that are hurting.

Hi guys,

Sorry I've been off the grid. Got some hard news at work--we may need to downsize and, if so, my department may be consolidated with another. Might be okay, or some people might lose their jobs. I'm going to brush off the old resume just in case.

It's been a long and tiring day, so I'll post more later. Thank you all for your patience. We are still searching, but no breakthroughs to report. :( It's been exhausting and we're all a little run down but we miss John very much and we hope we can bring him home soon to the people who love him. Thank you guys.

Hi JoyM,
Thank you so much for the updates and also answering questions. I really hoped that John would be found over the weekend in Sebastopol. Once again, just wanted to say what an amazing job you, John's family & friends are doing.

Since you mentioned that the search has returned to SF, I had one more suggestion...

SF seems to be one of the few major cities with SROs (single room occupancy) buildings. I saw in this article that some are run by non-profit/gov't housing and some are for-profit (some may even operate as "hotels"). They are not great buildings... usually considered one step above homelessness... and not very safe...
I don't know if it is worth checking out... I have not found a comprehensive list online, maybe another WSer can weigh in.

We did stop by these early on, but we should try again. Thank you!

Hi Joy,
So sorry about the job situation. My daughter has been through this sooooo many times at her company. It's very stressful. Take good care of yourself.

May there be good news soon about both John and your job.

Oh no, Joy! I completely understand your reasons for not disclosing information about John's legal case, and I didn't mean to imply I was talking about this case specifically. My apologies! I just meant WS cases, in general, that result in a missing person being found--how it might be helpful to know what circumstances initially led to their disappearance. I should have made that more clear.
I'm sorry! I must have read into it because it's killing me that I can't say more about this case because the reports that are out there right now are *very* misleading. You'd never know that John did not run that business, for one.

Anyway, I think I misinterpreted because I really do want to correct the record but I can't! My apologies for misreading!
