I wish that were true about how someone was raised, but I know OF 3 separate grown men with wives and children and very active members in their churches that were respectable members of the community with good jobs. Over the past 10 years these 3 men on separate occasions were busted with child porn. Two of the 3 speak about how their addiction started with "basic" porn then escalated and escalated over the years. When interviewed they cry how they've ruined their children's lives by the shame and so forth. It doesn't completely matter how someone is raised. I'm sure it's less likely that someone with good morals gets involved in this stuff, but men are men and addiction is addiction. I know my husband's computer at home and at work are both locked up with k-9. I'm the only one with the code. This is a good thing to do in your homes, but I can't lock up all of my son's acquaintances' computers. : /

To say that general pornography leads to an addiction to child porn is a reckless and irresponsible thing to say...imo. It doesn't matter if the 3 men you are talking about had wives/kids, were active in church or respectable members of the community. So was Gacy. Predators are predators.

You also have to understand that the world we live in now is MUCH MUCH different than the 60's, 70's or 80's that some of you grew up in. Technology has moved from luxury (record players, TV's, arcade games) to being engrained in everyday life. Cell phones, computers, and many other electronic systems are the bloodline of life today and being completely removed from that can stunt a childs ability to succeed and be part of the ever evolving world. Demonizing technology is not the answer, you cant blame porn, video games, rock music, tv violence for the actions of a person. Parents have way more power and influence on this front than any video can. You can remove the child from technology and all the scary stuff you can imagine online but that doesnt automatically release the child from being effected by his environment. Internet/technology is only one of many things that shapes a person's world in these modern times.

I think this thread is for Madyson, not to push any certain agenda.

I think you have a false sense of security. I raised my kids with very little tv, no internet until they were in 3rd/4th grade and only one computer in the living room that they shared and was visible to all of us. No smartphones until they were well into high school, just some old flip phones that you basically could only make calls from. Despite that, my oldest daughter ended up in therapy when she was 13 and it came out that boys in her middle school (upper middle class, best in the area middle school) were harassing the girls with hardcore porn on their smartphones. She was so horrified and upset by what they were "shocking" the girls with that she ended up having sleeping and anxiety issues. She still to this day won't tell me exactly what she saw but her therapist said it sounded pretty bad (and of course she couldn't tell me specifics due to confidentiality).

But I agree that we should try our best. It doesn't mean they won't find it or it won't find them unfortunately.

I would feel weird policing my husband, but I'm sure you have your reasons. I would imagine it's fairly easy to circumvent the software through a VPN or TOR though, just so you know. In fact if someone were to attempt to do this to me I would just have a separate browser on a key drive and use a VPN. Trust me when I say, I would figure it out.

I do remember. It was pretty interesting. Iirc, violent crimes of this nature remain rare for teens. Gang violence was more common but not sexually motivated murders of young children. What case was that where we discussed that so heavily?

I will state that it seems that more of this is happening lately. And I did not agree with those who had the instinct that certain crimes were perpetrated by teens. I was shocked that Jessica Ridgeway was murdered by a teen. That had all the hallmarks of a practiced serial killer.

Then when little Jenise Wright went missing, again some suggested a teen. I was surprised.

After those two and Autumn Pasquale, Skylar Neese, the slenderman stabbing, the murder of Elizabeth Olten, I guess I'm not so surprised anymore. But see below.

You and I have connected on several other threads and I believe share the bond of same aged children. I couldn't rest tonight. To think a Mom loved this child, wiped away her tears / fears, Cradled and rocked this child to sleep . . . Just to have someone swoop in and destroy her baby like this and put her in a dumpster?? I have no mercy for the person who did this - absolutely not one ounce. I wish I hadnt opened this thread because now I can't stop thinking about Madyson and her family.

When I saw the one woman screaming about her son and stamping around- it made me mad. Perhaps that's not rational, but it bothered me. I thought about Maddy's poor mama. And how she is the one who should be screaming and screaming and screaming.

This happens a lot when a child is killed by another minor. People want something to blame and this (or violent video games) is commonly used as the big bad thing from which all or most teen violence stems. Whether that is actually true or not, I don't know.

I don't know the answers. I think the stats show this remains rare. And I know this kind of thing has happened long before the internet became such a huge part of life.

Look up Jesse Pomeroy, a 14 year old serial killer. Or Leopold and Loeb. Murdered another teen to be supermen. William Hierens, the Lipstick killer, a sexual sadist whose last victim was a little girl. Eric Smith who killed a 4 year old.

I kind of think that teens who do something like this have something wrong with them to begin with. A normal kid won't be turned into a monster by watching porn and a creepy kid doesn't need to view graphic violence or sex to become a monster. It's either in them or not.

But surely constant exposure to violence can't help. And it could tip the balance for a kid on the line.

Maybe the confusion over the recycling bin is that they are calling the blue dumpster a recycling bin, even though it is much larger than your average recycling bin, and maybe the smaller blue containers are emptied into it???

sigh.......remember philip chism was able to move his victim in a trash bin....this kid could have been doing something similar, M was so small, and the P was a big kid. Could have been moved somehow without being entirely suspicious. Maybe even taking out the trash for mom. Who knows. It's all just awful. Beyond awful.

That red door opens into that underground area, the garage, I believe. But it is where that blue bin is located. The fencing is to the right of that red door.

In this photo, you can also see all of the blue bins that are lined up in the photo with the brown garbage bin.

I think the recycle bin might be located further inside the garage. Since it appears that the whole garage area is the chain link fencing, probably a bit difficult to pinpoint where it is exactly without seeing photos of the entire garage area. I haven't seen them posted.

From what I could tell when viewing anything and everything I could online last nigt, that single red door was THE DOOR (in pic #1 above). That door was the door that was opened and all the authorities were surrounding it.

It is not 'general' pornography that is the issue. Nor is it technology that is the issue, imo. It is the desensitation to violence, and the graphic rape porn, free on the net, that I think is causing problems. Here are two concrete, recent examples:

I would agree, but I am a retired teacher living in a foreign country that has plenty of domestic violence, sex abuse, etc etc etc. It is a tourist area and women come and go topless as well as wear the tiniest of bottoms.

The music they listen to is American crap with the worst lyrics ever. I don't know what they watch on TV as I never watch it.

Young children and children of all ages are out all over by themselves.

You can find examples of anything but correlation does not imply causation.

I agree that children should be monitored and actually spoken to by parents. One does not simply do something like this because they watched a video, there is much more deep down that is the root of this.

Ease of access to information and technology IS the world we live in now and parental approaches need to be adjusted accordingly.

Rock music, movies, TV, internet do not cause things like this to happen, but I do admit it has the potential to effect those that already have issues to begin with.
