In a similar vein, I recall reading a book by Oliver Sacks that discussed a study linking masochism to severe illness at a young age. Apparently being ill at a time when our brains are still developing and neural connections are still being made led to individuals forming "mental" or "subconscious" links between pain and love. Picture a child who is hospitalized numerous times who undergoes painful procedures and is subsequently comforted with loving gestures by parents. I hope I explained this well enough. I can find the actual reference if anyone would like it. Oliver Sacks has several very interesting books about the brain and unusual neurological disorders. I'm sure many have heard of "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat."

I've read "Seeing Voices", but would love to read this one.

Just jumping off from your post - and not directly related to the perp in this case, but generally speaking about parenting and how kids turn out.

The interplay between "nature" and "nurture" is complex and dynamic. Just look at epigenetics, for example.

It's never, ever as simplistic as either "he was entirely born like that" or "his parents entirely made him like that".

A girl I went to school with totally went off the rails as a teenager - ended up falling in with a very bad crowd, working as a prostitute (very under age), and dying of a drug overdose. She was completely the "perfect child" in every way until her parents divorced and she took it VERY personally. Her parents did everything in their power to 'save' her including getting police and family services involved, but by their combined powers they simply could not. It was like once she went down that path her fate was simply inevitable. However her slightly older sister took the divorce in her stride as most kids do, and went on to become a doctor. The family as a whole were well-educated, really normal, very lovely people. Why that daughter fell to a million pieces after a divorce - something most kids, including her own sister, deal with just fine even if it's hard at the time - who knows? But you couldn't just say "well if a kid turns into a hooker and a drug addict then I know exactly what kind of family they come from". You just always CAN'T tell that.

You bring up some good points... IMO...

However... A path of drugs and prostitution may be ways of dealing with stress..

Yet... A desire/need to kill/take innocent lives seem to be much more of a deviant human behavior... So much more difficult to understand...

IMO...

K

Do you think sociopaths/psychopaths are born that way or become that way due to trauma, neglect, etc.? I don't know the answer but I do suspect many are "made", especially if the abuse/neglect is a constant or near constant. Can you imagine how that could warp/rewire a mind? I am making no apologies for offenders.

IMHO they are born that way and it blossoms as they age. My nephew is a sociopath. No trauma in his life. Loving family, smart kid, lots of friends, socially out there, was always the kid who helped others, but there were ALWAYS signs of something else from the time he was a baby. Quirky things and worrisome behaviours that were odd but not off the charts or anything. I think that outside factors can influence behaviours but I honestly believe that these people's brains are just lacking the proper wiring and eventually it comes to fruition.

I can't help but wondering...

Since some children are born with missing and/or deformed physical features...(limbs, etc.)...

Can psychopaths be born with missing brain parts?

One can be seen... The other cannot be "seen"... Yet the effects can be witnessed?

Just a thought...

Oops! duplicate post!

Did he have friends of his own age? Did he do things with kids of his own age?

Although I did see on his IG that there were kids commenting. Not after the crime, but comments that had been written earlier.

Children with fetal alcohol effect and syndrome are missing parts of the brain depending on when the alcohol was used during conception.

He is mentally ill. That is different than killers like Bundy or Dahmer .

And? Holme's was genetically predisposed to mental illness. So basically, he was born this way. And likely no amount of good parenting could change what he is.

What about the science from the neuro scientist?

That is not opinion.

Almost any brain studies about mental illness or sociopaths and psychopaths...is opinion. Because scientists actually know so little about the brain, currently there is no way to prove or find conclusions in things they "find."

But good mental health care would have had a different outcome if the therapist would have done her job instead of ignoring what he was telling her.

I just cannot believe in the bad seed.

And I have never heard of a murderer who came from a loving home.

A lot of families of murderers profess to have a loving home, but really who would stand up in front of the press and say ' well I should have known this would happen when I was beating / raping / neglecting/ starving the child as a toddler ' ? NONE ! But even if the home itself was loving and nice does not mean they were not exposed to something outside of the home. Who is the football coach from New England that got busted after years of abusing the young boys ? ( super public case but his name escapes me now , jerry something? ) Anyway, probably a huge amount of his victims did have loving homes and families and yet they were still exposed to a monster. Food for thought.

What about the brain studies that are being done?

One article. There are tons of them.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddi...brain-science-and-psychology-studies-of-2013/

Yes, there are always (especially in the last decade or so) an amazing amount of studies. Yet, none of them are accepted as fact int he scientific community. Rather, it's considered progress.

ETA: I should have been more clear. Plenty of studies about brains have been considered conclusive. I'm speaking about brain studies related to psychopathy and sociopaths, and also horrific crimes. That is the area where their is little to no conclusive proof or findings. But there is certainly progress.

Jerry Sandusky himself was from a loving home.

A very thorough article!

"Citing an anonymous source Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Gonzalez used ice cream to lure Maddy into his mother's apartment, then strangled and killed her with blunt force trauma to the head."

"Tannery resident Setorro Garcia said he practically had to shoo away Gonzalez because of his incessant questions about the status of the search."

"Media reports say Gonzalez confessed his crime to police though Wednesday, Santa Cruz police said they were done talking about it."

"Gonzalez, who reportedly said he wanted to commit suicide prior to the crime, is on suicide watch at Juvenile Hall."

Great article, snap. Thank you.

I had an opportunity to view his Instagram account for quite a while and I noticed that he likes to post videos. In one of the pictures which makes use of a mirror you can see the camera and image. It's a good camera situated on a tripod in what appears to be his room. Sigh....I think you know where I'm going with this.

I would not be surprised to hear at some point that there is either video evidence of what transpired or at the very least pictures.

I hope I'm wrong but we will see.
And so, we can assume that none of the pics of him was taken by a "friend". Another quote to loneliness.

I know of several families who have 3 or 4 healthy, loving children, and one psychopath. One family that I grew up with helped convince me of 'bad seeds.' Their second oldest son was a coldhearted, cruel kid from the earliest I can remember. He was never ignored or mistreated. His brother and 2 sisters are healthy and lovely. He abused animals from a very young age. Set fires, the first time at age 4. He was just playing with matches' and they blamed themselves for not noticing he had taken them from the fireplace mantel. But as time went on we all saw that he was cunning, sneaky, malicious, and heartless. He is in prison right now for identity theft for stealing from his girlfriend's invalid mother.

I just posted a case... at the age of 3/4 he set his crib on fire then he was digging up dead farm animals, mutilating them and carrying them around. A couple yrs ago he almost killed a child and now, at the age of 11 he killed a 4 yr old.
