Original article was from 2016

(People, April 20) Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, co-wrote a film loosely based on his drug addiction experience. 22-year-old Nick, who first went to rehab at age 15, has been working on staying clean since he left at 19. He recalls spending a lot of time homeless, sleeping on the streets. Being Charlie is a film he wrote based on his experience in rehab, and the stories he heard from other addicts about their experiences.

Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer were found dead inside their Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14.

According to TMZ, the couple suffered “lacerations consistent with a knife,” though LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division is still investigating.

The couple was married for 35 years before their tragic deaths. They leave behind four children: sons Jake and Nick, daughter Romy, and Reiner’s daughter Tracy, whom he shares with late ex-wife Penny Marshall.

Oh, damn it. I can’t say why, but to me this just makes it a thousand times worse. If the son alleged to have murdered RR and his wife is in his early to mid-20s, I wonder if perhaps the incident was precipitated by the types of mental illnesses that often present themselves in young men of this age (schizophrenia, for example).

It appears that the son in question is 32. That doesn't necessarily negate sudden onset mental illness, but the article that mentions he's 22 was originally from 2015.

Aha. I thought 22 was really young.

Of course, 32 is still young.

Hubby and I are truly heartbroken. Rob was a huge part of our entertainment life, and he was still so active in the industry. His talent and, frankly, his genius will be missed. I hate that his and his wifes lives ended so violently, by a loved one.
I don't like this world very much right now :'( Too much tragedy and sadness.

Rob and Nick interviewed about their 2015 movie "Being Charlie," which was a semi-autobiographical film written by Nick, and directed by his father.

Today I am just numb.
I'm sure in the days to come we're going to hear a very tragic story of drug addiction, and lord knows what else.

How awful and tragic! I recall watching All in the Family growing up and RR will always be Meathead to me. RIP Mr. & Mrs. Reiner. 😔

Thank you for catching that. I edited my post to note the original article date.

Rob Reiner and his wife being murdered by their son is going to feel like the end of an era for me.

I think it was just two nights ago that my boyfriend and I rewatched Spinal Tap for the umpteenth time. It always makes us laugh.

Now everything Rob’s done, “When Harry Met Sally” and all his work, will have a pall over it, at least to me, because murdered by your child is not equivalent to him just dying naturally.

JMO and R.I.P. to the Reiners. Thank you for the humor you gave us for so long.
