I just wonder if these rehabs did not have the kind of professional support that could drill down to the kind of underlying mental disorder or psychosocial disorder he had.

The rehab industry is a wild place and much of the time the motives of the institutions that claim they wish to help people are not what they seem. Many of them are just money printing presses for those who can afford their "care" and barely attempt to actually treat the underlying causes of a person's addiction.

You don't even have to take my word for it. There are numerous documentaries, podcasts, etc. out there that demonstrate just how opportunistic and exploitive they can be.

I can say I had to find one with less rules b/c the person who would be going wasnt going if he couldn’t have a phone. He was addicted to opiates , so he also had to medically detox before he participated . He lasted 2 weeks and came back bragging about how minor his problem was cause everyone else in there snorted way more oxy’s than he did. Cost was 18K US
I couldn’t find a Canadian one he would agree to go to.

Some may want to blame spoiled brat syndrome.. .but the other kids turned out fine.

It's important to remember that Nick suffers from some form of mental illness, according to his own parents. I think it would be short-sighted to attribute his actions entirely to being spoiled, arrested development, etc.

In the months leading up to her death, Michele is said to have been anguished over her son's spiraling mental illness and drug issues, telling friends 'we've tried everything, ' according to TMZ.

Prosecutors added special circumstances of multiple murders and use of a dangerous weapon, a knife, meaning, if he is convicted, Nick could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty.

Very complex ... maybe -- if there were more than one involved , notes left at the scene, threatening texts or voicemails left prior to the murders.
Is that referred to as mitigating circumstances ?
For the record I doubt it.
I think Nick surprised them, as in they never expected him capable of such actions ?

Otherwise with what we know it seems fairly simple.
Their son whom they loved entered their home and murdered them both.

The prosecutors added what makes this more complex and given that there were two murders and the weapon afaik has not been recovered, then yes.
Also wondering if there were any security cameras inside or outside the home ?
That will aid the prosecution if so.

Nick Reiner deserves a fair trial, as would we all !
So far it appears a slam dunk, but we'll see.

Honestly, it sounds like a preamble for them planning to go the mental illness/insanity route. And I'm not saying he isn't, obviously he is ill. I'm just saying it sounds like they're setting the stage/tempering expectations. Especially the line about "not rush to judgement".

It’s so ridiculous, because I’ve been following this since the news first said that two people were found dead at the Reiner home, and then we heard the whole story.

But I suddenly just now felt a shockwave——wow, Rob Reiner has been murdered!

Good old amiable, funny, talented Rob Reiner was ACTUALLY murdered by his son. As well as the mother.

It’s like a delayed reaction that just hit me all over again.

Let me add my thanks to you for posting this.

Insightful in what it seems to portray (to me) but doesn't explicitly state.

There seems to be a lot of wishful thinking in there by RR, with a strong belief that this was the way to help his son. The description of NR makes it seem that his problems were far too complicated for this approach.

As the story of this young alleged murderer comes into focus, the question of mental illness versus addiction versus mental illness and addiction will be revealed. In the descriptors of this man's early life, it sounds as though there were some real and deep issues. Regardless of who you are.... mental illness and treatment is not a linear trajectory. In conjunction with addiction, the treatment of both is much more complex.

We will learn more. But, today, I am sad for both of these victims who died at the hands of a person they probably never thought would harm them. Also, I am saddened for their children who will re-litigate every moment where they might have done something different that would have changed the outcome.

The bar for what defines premeditation is pretty low and it sounds like there may have been a component of that involved.

That's a good observation and may be quite relevant.
