From his age of 15 to 32, it sounds like his incredible and generous loving parents spent untold amounts of money, time and untold mental anguish and deep family pain attempting to fix their son!
If you’ve never had an addict as a family member, alcohol in my sisters case, watching the damage, the effects on siblings, the community, the huge dollar amounts, the promises of professionals, the certainty of the latest rehab or expensive sober living homes.
One more try??? Pffft
As the daughter of an addict and parent of an addict, you hit the nail on the head. It's a hell no one can imagine. Eventually, you have to realize that you can't fix them if they don't want to be fixed. That sounds incredibly cold, but sadly it's the harsh truth.

There is also a growing chorus in the field of addiction medicine suggesting a move away from complete abstinence as the end goal in favor of what’s called “harm reduction.” My own psychiatrist is board certified in addiction medicine and favors this approach. We use it for me for weed & shopping addictions. It’s basically asking “what’s the problem you’re having due to your anddiction? and is there a way to solve it that isn’t stop using all addictive substances forever?”
I think that may have been.the approach the Reiners took. It sounds like they were not forcing him into rehab that he didn't want, by the time he was was out of his teens (given the finished movie came out 10 years ago when he was only 22).

I also think that stabbing your parents while they sleep is just so far out of the realm of any ordinary human behaviour, that it's probably not the case that he was any kind of ordinary person with an ordinary addiction or ordinary mental health problems, that just somehow went awry by accident or somebody not treating him with the right approach.

JMO

ETA: after all, Lizzie Borden wasn't addicted or showed any sign of mental illness!

I couldn't access the daily mail's article on the timeline that was posted in the last page - and also an article where the guy at the gas station saw NR before the murders - does it say about what time?
TIA if anyone can help - and yes, I am trying to put together a timeline - or is someone else doing that? :)

I’m sorry if it’s been discussed, I need to catch up, but I had recorded the ABC special last night and tried to watch it a bit ago, and had to turn it off after the first three minutes. It was so unbelievably tasteless. TOO SOON! Opened with a journalist and someone else basically sharing anecdotes about how they found out. Like, gossipy, and as if it were someone who had passed decades ago. And definitely not someone so revered. Disgusted. Thank you.
I agree with you on the Too Soon, etc.

This podcast with Terry Gross on Fresh Air was on last night and is a replay of an interview she had with Rob this September on the occasion of Spinal Tap II.

There’re two anecdotes regarding Rob and his father Carl that brings both laughter and tears from Rob. His loving reaction towards his father is so touching and it’s so sad that NR had none of that for his.

This inside source states RR has been quite vocal all along that charities will substantially benefit from his estate.

Reiner family bombshell as insiders reveal who is paying for Nick's celebrity lawyer... their secret motive... and who will REALLY inherit $200m fortune

Indeed, the tormented young man has had issues since childhood, the family friend said, with his struggles allegedly manifesting even before he discovered drugs. Nick's first stint in rehab was at the age of 15; he went on to have at least 17 more.

'He was always deeply troubled,' the source said. 'Then he got into drugs and the problem magnified to horrific levels. He made his parents' lives hell. On the surface they had everything but the tragedy of Nick was always lurking there in the background and that worry never went away. They did everything to help that boy.

'The reality is he had violent outbursts. Michele told me about it. The family has been scared of him. He could be violent and super aggressive.

Wondering if the parents belonged to any support groups for family of addicts or sought out help from professionals for themselves? It's obvious they were in need of both.

Is there a way to read that? It’s paywalled
In a nutshell is says that a family insider said that the cash is coming from the estate. That the relatives hired Alan Jackson and part of the ~$200M estate is being used to save Nick from prison. It goes on to say that they would prefer him to be in a mental institution rather than be incarcerated according to the unnamed source/close family friend.

Seems like they think the DP is off the table. In my mind it isn't.

If I were the prosecutor, I would be looking into stabbing murders in New Jersey and wherever else this kid was homeless. This might not have been his first murder.

Here is a map of the Reiner's house, to the Pierside, and on to USC. To the best of my knowledge, Nick was walking as he was seen on video's walking. Does he own a car? Did he steal his parents car after the murders? Because if not, 6+ hours is a LOT of walking. That leads me to wonder if he took public transportation which are equipped with cameras. Even if he did not, there are camera everywhere so they'd have captured him from start to finish, either walking or riding.

Map SOURCE.
I’ve read that Nick didn’t drive and that he used private driving services (uber/lyft) along with public transportation.

It’s also been stated that he used his own personal credit card while checking into his hotel room.

Two timelines I saw this morning (LA Times/NYT) both said NR checked into the hotel AFTER the murders.
Has anyone seen this confirmed?

okay - this is what I have so far. If someone sees "what" time he went into the Sinclair gas station mart - please post. Articles just says late night...

Timeline: “We don’t have that kind of specificity yet,” McDonnell said of the timeline of the couple’s deaths. “We’re waiting on the coroner to be able to try and determine as best they can at this point.”

[map Reiner's house to the Pierside & on to USC on post #935, page 47]

The Sinclair Gas station is about two miles from the hotel. And the hotel is five minutes from the metro train stop, which goes directly to the Exposition Blvd stop where Nick was apprehended by cops.

Prosecutors have alleged N Reiner stabbed his parents in "approximately the early morning hours" on Sunday, according to a news release. But a specific time has not been disclosed.

12/12/25 Friday: One source told the Daily Mail that Rob & Michele ate at the Amici restaurant Friday, the night before they attended a holiday party at Conan O'Brien's house with their son.

12/12/25 Friday-Rob & Michele & Nick attend Conen O'Brien's holiday party.

12/13/25 Saturday @ 12:16am - Nick walking across a Sinclair gas station forecourt. John Fawcett, the owner of the nearby Sinclair gas station, has described seeing Nick walking across the forecourt late on Saturday night -CCTV footage from late Saturday night Fawcett described how Nick walked westbound along San Vicente Avenue before cutting through his station. He then crossed the street before pausing outside a consignment store called The RealReal & then heading up the sidewalk.

12/14/25 Sunday @ 4am: Reportedly, NR checked into room 207 at The Pierside Hotel in Santa Monica around 4am on Sunday, 12/14/25 covered in blood per daily mail article [post #933, page 47].

12/14/25 Sunday @ 2pm - Masseuse arrives-no one answers do.

12/14/25 Sunday @ 3pm - Romy finds her parents dead.

12/14/25 Sunday @ 3:30pm - Emergency services called to home.

12/14/25 Sunday @ 3:40pm: The couple was found dead around 3:40pm on Sunday, 12/14/25—reportedly by their daughter Romy.

12/14/25 Sunday @ ~8:20pm - Nick buys a drink at Sinclair gas station. Early Sunday morning captured on CCTV the moment Nick, wearing a cap & backpack, calmly strolled by the service station just half a mile from his parents' home.

12/14/25 Sunday @ 9:15pm: Reiner was taken into custody [at the *Expo/Vermont Metro station in Exposition Park] around 9:15pm, Sunday, 12/14/25.

12/15/25 Monday @ 5:04am: booked on suspicion of murder at 5:04am, Monday, 12/15/25

Just to clarify a few things about addition medicine and terms used here. First, “california sober” means weed only. no alcohol. I think prescribed meds like if one has adhd is OK too on this informal “program.”

An example of “harm reduction” would be like after my alcoholic mother got a DUI, she decided not to drive at night anymore bc that’s when she drinks.

Now, I’m not sure I agree with this approach… it def doesn’t work for all people or all situations, and I think you’d need to have an addiction specialist overseeing this process which Nick probably didn’t. My mom doesn’t have a doc either & simply abstaining from driving at night of course did not solve her alcohol issues. But, it’s a start! A competent practitioner (like my doc) could help her see other problems stemming from her use that she needs to minimize, rather than simply preventing a catastrophe like a DUI.

Maybe Nick was trying to use lesser substances (like weed) to stave off cravings for harder drugs (like meth)… kind of similar to how a lot of ppl in Narcotics Anonymous take up smoking cigarettes— it helps their brain to be addicted to something in place of the more harmful thing. My friend traded heroin for cigarettes on the advice of her NA group.

all JMO & experience!

Thank you from this now-abstinent alcohol addict for this measured and informed post!

I followed a harm reduction / moderation pathway, which eventually led me to abstinence. There has been a lot of kneejerk posting in this thread based on media representations and clichés of addiction, so it's nice to see a post with both some knowledge and some lived experience.

@Niner found this…..

The video of his first walk through the Sinclair gas station has 12:16 am stamped on the video (the one with the black bag). Rob & Michele Reiner Did Not Kick Son Nick Out of Family Home Before Murders
IIRC the owner of the gas station said the camera could be an hr off?

The second video is him at the Arco gas station near Metro/ Exposition Park (he has the red backpack) at 8:20 pm Video Footage Shows Nick Reiner Enter Store an Hour Before His Arrest.

Thank you for sharing this. At least your mom had the good sense to stop driving drunk at night, risking her life and the lives of others.

This is extraordinarily unlikely. There is no time for another state to be doing its investigation, it's very unlikely CA would extradite NR to be tried anywhere else at this time, and even if the first 2 extremely unlikely events occurred or an arrest warrant was issued by another state, most certainly Alan Jackson would move to get prior acts excluded from the current case/trial as prejudicial, to say the least. This case is damning enough.

Hi Niner - one small correction that I see, the Conan holiday party was Saturday night. Thanks for your hard work!

It wouldn’t surprise me if NR wasnt misdiagnosed. Were his issues more than drug (speculation) addiction. NR wanted the noise to stop. Did he ever mention the noise to anyone? He had issues since age of 15. His eyes are dead, nothing there, nobody home, narcissistic stare. Id say NR put his family through hell all these years.

Fighting with an adult at a party... It's all about him, I suppose.

I have no doubt his parents did every thing possible to seek help for NR. However, the person has to be a willing participant. The law is not on their side. Personally, I dont think he had it in him to do the work needed.

Using a knife is so personal. Did he hate his parents? I think so.

Mental illness, drugs and alcoholic, never a good mix, usually ends in tragedy; and thats not just Hollywood.

I feel so much grief for the siblings and loved ones, even though I didnt know Rob or Michele Reiner. I know this is happening every where, unfortunately.
