CA - Pacific Palisades - 30,000 People Ordered to Evacuate From L.A. Wildfires #2

With the current count, at least two more victims from the Eaton fire and three from the Palisades fire have yet to be named.

There are, as far as I can tell, twelve at risk missing named from the Eaton fire still unaccounted for. None publicly named from the Palisades fire, but all missing from the Pacific Palisades were accounted for, so the three victims from that fire are likely from Malibu.

IMHO many of these fires have been started by thrill-seeking arsonists taking advantage of the wind. I don’t think power lines can be blamed for all of them. Unfortunately, i’m not sure we’ll ever know who these sick people are.

Most of the Oregon fire strike teams sent to California to help fight the fires that destroyed thousands of homes have returned.

"We saw mass amounts of devastation in Detroit and Idanha in the 2020 Labor Day Fire, but this was on a whole another level. Whole communities wiped out. Schools, grocery stores all gone on the Sunset area"

"The fire went from the top of the ridge about two or three miles all the way down to the beach in about 15 minutes. I think no matter what kind of prep they were doing, that was just the perfect storm that happened in SoCal"

"LA may have to get rid of its most iconic feature to protect against future wildfires.

1738172151386.jpeg

Although there's been debate over whether to banish the palm trees in Los Angeles,
UCLA Professor Stephanie Pincetl doesn't believe all of them need to be cut down.

'We don’t have to be draconian about this,
but we have to be thoughtful'.

The palm trees are highly flammable,
with their dead fronds turning into embers when sparked that can carry for miles by the wind.

Similarly,
the peeling bark on LA's ubiquitous eucalyptus trees can have the same effect.

After multiple fires broke out across Southern California earlier this month,
dramatic photos of flaming palm trees quickly emerged."

Oh thank God! From your photo, I thought you meant the Hollywood sign. The palm trees are no big deal.

Though it was originally made of wood, the Hollywood sign got rebuilt all in metal decades ago, it's going to be fine.

Thank You for posting this. The sincere love for the Los Angeles area expressed by all the performers at the FireAid Benefit concert is heartfelt and touching.

The photos are from the MSN site.

... Flea’s wild antics had them on their feet in no time.
Once they were up, many stayed up. The Chili Peppers kept the energy soaring, tearing through a set packed with their biggest hits such as “Californication” and “Give it Away.”

“LA is our home,” Flea said. “We … love you.”

Nirvana reunite at FireAid as music’s biggest acts raise money for LA wildfire relief

Donations are the focus
Throughout the show, viewers and attendees were encouraged to donate via FireAidLA.org.

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and his wife Connie pledged to match all donations made during the live broadcast, doubling the proceeds. Crystal noted that because of their announcement, U2’s million dollar donation was worth twice that amount.

All of the proceeds will go to those affected.

To me. the Hollywood sign is far more iconic than the palm trees. I've never gotten to see it up close, only the Griffith Observatory.

For the first time in 24 days, there are no major active wildfires in CA

So happy to hear that these major fires are finally out!!! I have been so stressed about family and friends down there and the former homes of my parents, grandparents, and aunt aside from everything else going on in the world that it's been hard to sleep lately. Everyone in my circle seems to be okay.

Wildlife officials rescued a 525-pound bear found hiding underneath a home that was evacuated during the Eaton Fire.

When evacuations were lifted and the owner of the Altadena home returned, their utility company said power couldn’t be restored since a large bear was residing in the crawl space where workers needed to access.

ABC Australia had an article about the bear, too.

We're in a drought here with so little rain for this time of year. The canyons are so dry, and part of the problem is there is huge homeless encampments. Unfortunately, they're saying this was the cause of the fires here.
San Diego's 2024 Point in Time count shows over 10,605 homeless people, up 3% from last year; shelters are full and more beds are needed according to officials. Volunteers seek insight into San Diego's homelessness with annual count

I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news. It just that although, at this time, there may be no active wildfires, there's still these ongoing concerns. Praying for some gentle, consistent, non-destructive rainfall in the coming months.

San Diego experiencing driest start to winter on record Updated: Jan 31, 2025 / 06:30 PM PST - Video Included

"...still experiencing the driest winter season on record, tied with the winter of 1963."

Even after some precipitation on January 25 and 16, the rain gauge at the San Diego International Airport now shows about a third inch of rain since October 1, which is the start of our water year. However, we should have close to five inches by now.
