Investigation launched after dead body found in moving truck in Rio Linda - ABC 10
An investigation is underway in Rio Linda after a dead body was found in a U-Haul van.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Office is describing the death as suspicious.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said the initial call was related to parking enforcement for an out of place vehicle, but after deputies ran the license plate, it came back as having been stolen.

When authorities did a vehicle recovery, they found a corpse in the back of the van.

Gandhi said deputies weren't able to confirm whether anything suspicious happened inside the van and are awaiting personnel from the crime lab before going inside it.

The California Highway Patrol came out as a referral from the parking enforcement division. CHP ran the license plate, and they determined that the U-Haul van was reported stolen out of South Sacramento on Thursday, Aug. 17. But it is unclear how long it had been parked at the Rio Linda location.

“When they got there, they did an inspection of the car, looked inside, and saw a body in the backseat, in that back compartment of the van. From there, they called us,” Gandhi said.

Just before 3:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 20, 2023, the California Highway Patrol responded to a neighborhood on I Street in Rio Linda to recover a moving van that had been reported stolen a few days earlier. Upon arrival, they discovered what they believed to be a human body in the back of the van and requested Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies respond to investigate.

Deputies arrived at the scene and confirmed a deceased adult male was in the back of the van. Based on their initial observations, they suspected the death may have been by suspicious means and requested detectives to respond.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, interviewed witnesses, and gathered evidence. Detectives discovered the victim had been shot multiple times. The victim’s identity will be made available by the Sacramento County Coroner. No
further information is available at this time.
