CA CA - Skip, 55, & Joni Tillman, 51, La Canada, 7 Feb 2000

  • #201
I get the feeling the trouble followed Joni and not Skip. 329 Lawson was the address for a lot a possibly shady businesses and a check reveals that H and R ( Ray?) Elliot ( Joni's maiden name ) owned that property. Click on the 'next' button below 19 residents in this url.

http://www.spokeo.com/CA/Glendale/329-Lawson-Pl#resident_info_panel_5

Was H*** Elliot the mother who "was supposed to die first"? according to Joni's 1/2 brother?

It may have followed her, anything is possible, and I too wondered about her brother at first. Having never met him, I couldn't form and opinion at all. I thought of their issues and wondered it that would make a person so angry. However the crime scene did not seem that of a crime of anger. I am oblivious to anyone's financial status (I learn more as we go along) but didn't get the feeling he would finance a "hit". Again I don't want to speculate since I haven't had any evidence that might lead to him. Joni's dad and step-mom seemed to be very nice, proper, people. Kept her room as it was when she was growing up in their smaller house near Hollywood if am not mistaken. Only went there a few times. The were not "rich", well mannered and I don't think they had any idea of what was going on. Nothing may have while they were still alive. I was unable to find obituaries for any of them. Came across similar names etc. and like someone had said, I don't think they are the Elliot's that owned that house on Lawson. I did finally find out that the last house I visited was 316 Knight Way, La Canada, CA 91011. I don't know if they rented or owned that house. All of my "visualization" of the day of the murder was originally focused on that house. Now to see aerial views of the house they were in, it is easier to understand how easy it might have been for perps to lay in wait unnoticed. I also now get the impression that the deals that might have cost them their lives probably weren't such a matter of public record. Piece by piece I learn more of what he might have been "working on" or business ventures. He was not always forthcoming when asked questions and I get the impression she was not aware of many things. He wouldn't have wanted her to worry. I think my other impression after reading the will was that he set it up with the mindset that he would be leaving her and would leave her enough to live out her life with. I honestly thought the they might have left the country and we would hear from them asking to forward the money from the life insurance. He was,in my opinion, more of a take it with you when you go, kind of man. I was truly in shock that he had left a will and had that much disposable cash/assets. I didn't ever "nose" in my parents finances or anyone's it was "rude" in their eyes. Seems to make more sense now than at the time.

tamijt4, your "short novels" are informative, keep them up!

I have a couple of questions, might have already been discussed but would like to clarify-

Kaye also made the comment that " But there was something else they were doing", in reference to possible dealings with "the wrong people" It sounds more like something he knew than something he was speculating about, but jmo.

Would there be any chance of you trying to contact his lawyer? IMO these "wrong ppl" (or deals) would be the best leads to follow.

ETA: Scrap that idea as he is recently deceased http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/latimes/obituary.aspx?pid=175907189

Do the detectives have any prints at all from house or car they can use to compare?

Just pasting some points that stand out in the 2008 article-

The cold case detectives have little evidence to go on, but Jiles believes the murders were premeditated.

“Somebody had pre-dug (the graves). They were three to four feet deep,” Jiles said. “Someone knew the area.”

“Nothing was disturbed in the home,” he said. “Whoever got them lured them out of the house. They wouldn't have gone off on their own. They were taken out by someone they knew.”

The Tillmans' attorney, Walter Kaye, said in phone interview he is glad the case is being re-examined.

“The only thing I know is that they turned up in a couple of graves (in Yucaipa),” Kaye said. He added that he has thought of the couple often and wondered who would have murdered them.

Kaye said he was familiar with the embezzlement dispute and did not feel that would have had anything to do with their deaths.

“They had some land disputes,” he said. “But there was something else they were doing.”

He did not elaborate and said that he was not privy to any information on other “deals” in which they were involved.

“I think they just got themselves with the wrong people,” he said, adding that he feels the murders were professional.

“It does have tones of a professional killing,” Detective Jiles said, adding investigators are hoping that since so much time has passed, more people will be willing to talk.

“Relationships change; some who were afraid to talk (before) may not be now,” he said.

“This is a tough case,” he added.

So Detective Jiles believed the murders were premitated and that person would know the area, that it would be someone they knew however then he does also say professional?

Kaye has the comment "but there was something else they were doing"
Finding out what he knew would be key to this I believe.

ETA: As noted above he is now deceased, I wonder if he ever shared any thoughts with family, obviously a sensitive time now for them, perhaps if so one day they might share or we will never know.

I was just wondering....but if the killer had previously decided that the Tillman's were going to be murdered, and that the they were going to be buried. Would it not be better to have dug the graves prior? I would think that it would be much easier to explain digging a hole out in the middle of a dump, with no bodies in the truck, then it would be to explain having two bodies and dog. IYSWIM.

Am I reading this wrong? Shouldn't that confirm, or at least support, that the murder was premeditated? Would a first time killer have thought of something like that? Was there anyone in their lives who would have?

I understood them to say they were dug prior to. There was supposed to be heavy rain that weekend. Everything says that it was premeditated to my knowledge. You give me the feeling that you line of thinking may lead us somewhere. What I just read is written in the same 'style" to what I recently was explained. Hoping that makes sense. I always say no one is born a murdered there is always a first time. I am just beginning to get to know people they knew, only a handful are people we met as kids on summer visits. I'm not sure what anyone is capable of, surely more would be able to pay someone to do to it. I think to have left the house, vehicle and crime scene DNA free must have had some prior experience.

To the best of my knowledge no. A small amount of DNA was recently tested was all they would say. During the last 15 years there were so many LE/s. Only one recently would really even act like he was communicating but nothing ever came out of those conversations, in hind sight. I just always left it to them. Until the last last detective was promoted and cold case file seemed more permanent.......like it was going on a shelf. but they still won't answer questions. Won't let psychics come in. Won't honor requests for outside agencies or shows to look at the case. I had to regroup and will try to ask friends or send emails to detectives and try to field your questions but just unsure. I have never personally known anyone who handled the legalities of a murder. don't know what is accessible and what isn't. Basically need to start finding out what my "rights" are to try and keep this going I suppose. Your post again reminded me that when I had the page put up here my exact wording was "I feel like I need to do something soon I am worried that whomever is responsible may have passed away or will soon". Which is very possible. I was stuck on 1 suspect and hoping they would prove it. Unsure why they would want this (LE's) unsolved but it feels more like it now than ever.

I thought surely that would be the obit for my dads' friend Kurtis or Curtis T.........just checked and see new news to me once again. more soon.

I only have a moment before work. I have had to take a little time away from the page for a computer crash and to "soak all of this in". However, I think of you all, your tips, your leads, ideas, information, of course daily. I will try to be on later tonight to go over tips and answer questions. I wanted to just quickly thank you. And the page creators. For 15 years I just sat thinking it would be solved and without you all I would not have had the opportunity to try and bring someone to Justice. Learning about the father I so needed but never knew is not easy. I am no longer very proud to be his daughter, however I am proud of the person I became despite being his child. He still didn't deserve to die like he or his wife did. No one else has a right to take lives that way and they shouldn't be free to do it again or walk amongst us free. Thank you for reminding me to ask the hard questions, keep thinking, and make sure to fight for what is right. I would love to just stay here and do "my thing" as writing starts flow when I have quiet time, but I must work to keep the lights and internet on, more soon. Thank you all so much for being you, and caring about this with me, and teaching me so much along the way.

To the best of my knowledge they do not have prints. They, coming to realize, don't divulge much to me. The vehicle, I am now learning, was very new. Their house was meticulously clean, and I suppose also being a rental, may have had to do with the collection or not collecting that information. They did a "super glue" test on the vehicle. They, I am told, spray a fine mist of it all over the vehicle to find such evidence. If they were truly transported in the Durango and there were two or more perps then it leads me to believe it was a professional hit. Otherwise surely there would be evidence. I had honestly hoped for some type of information left behind by Mr. Kaye, who's to say there wasn't though, the police don't seem to feel the need to disclose anything to me at this point.

Thanks to Websleuths and everyone who posts, I now know the possibilities are almost endless, I would have thought it was 1 suspect and 1 motive. People have been more forthcoming since you all lead me to information I could question. Unfortunately I am not in CA and can't "dig" as deep as I would like to. I attempted to search for property in my dad (Skip) or Joni's name but you have to go in person or pay a bond for the information. Considering there are various states and cities involved that would get costly. I have come up with different theories or ideas but it would help narrow that down to talk to detectives, which I have not and only went there once about 14 years ago. This just inspired me to attempt to reach out in another direction. Asking them to at least listen to ideas this site has provoked and possibly they can follow something they haven't or at least disprove some if they have already gone in one direction.

Finally back on after PC crash, then browser wouldn't allow me to respond here. I have sent out various questions and waiting for reply's to post. Requested an LA Assessors office search for properties in my dad (skip) or his lawyer (kaye)'s name and was turned down. I will have to go in person or pay a bond for that information and can't afford to start doing that without some confidence there is something to be found. One good friend that was not close with his "new friends" (totske) has died, his lawyer (kaye) and who knows who else. New information that opens up many more thoughts is the knowledge that Skip had threatened or attempted suicide. After watching too much crime TV this gave me the thought that maybe my dad had attempted to have himself "taken out" and it went horribly wrong. Or attempted to have it look like they were kidnapped or left the country. A wild thought, but anything is truly possible. I thought I read something about someone using their credit cards but can't seem to find that. As I type this I am back to being stuck and frustrated. Without answers from police and the ability to go to LA my options are narrowing again.

wondering if this name matches up to the recent find of another websleuther.......with regard to a law firm and a possible connection.

I will ask. Off for so long I have to reread and ask Karol if he recalls the name. If he and his wife don't have answers they have been attempting to field them through other friends. Some is pieced together through my mom, or dad's sister. So I will return with answers if possible. I was attempting to find your original post so I could forward it but failed.

I am not having an easy time navigating this thread and posting. Usually take it as a sign that I am to let it rest a while. That may just be creative thinking on things but continuing causes too much frustration.

I have asked a few questions that await reply like about the dog. Was he a barker? Was he used to traveling in the car? Was he friendly with strangers? To get an idea if he might have been in the car with someone they knew.

I finally found pictures of the street they lived on. Thought they lived in the house they 2 houses prior. I can't find pics of the actual house, but see by the pics the set up of the house, property and surrounding landscape make it seem more probable that someone could have laid in wait for them or remained hidden in the landscape.

Sorry for jumping around topics. I haven't been on in so long, just trying to wrap up old thoughts and discoveries since being on here regularly.

I had one response from emails sent to the people mentioned in one news article about the story being on their psychic show. He said it was the production company who pulled the plug and nothing went further. They had no say in the matter, network decisions to go another direction, no further info available.

How long has it lasted. That those around at the time thought you had something to do with or thought you knew whom done it? And are there still some to this day that questions your possible involvement?..That was Jackie's thinking at the time yes?

I may still be, I do not know, I now know they have shared information with others that has never been disclosed to me. At the time I suppose she did, or just the fact that we weren't in their lives, anyone with any human decency would have realized I was 10 and my sister was 8 when he cut us out of his life. What could we have done. It was later discovered, and my father was confronted by Joni and my mom, that he had lied about the divorce and details of child support etc. He was to have worked while my mom went back to school after he had finished getting his CPA license. Instead I watched my sister while my mom went to school.

Now I believe that Jackie had her own reasons for making sure I was no where near there. She had access to their home while no one else did. She was said to have partnered my dad in property management and probably benefitted from his death in that his name was on nothing to do with it. But that is speculation and 3rd hand information. I am trying to locate records but may never be able to.

Almost forgot to add. I had, that day, been obsessively calling my dad. At the time I was truly unsure of why I was so determined. Historically, I seem to do this "worrying" when someone is passing away or someone close is hurting, in danger, or dying. When my grandma, his mom, was passing I was in my kitchen displaying some of the same frantic behavior and crying. Many people have passed away since then and I guess it is just an instinct I have only this time it left me suspect. I was estranged from my mother and sister and my identity had been used by my sister. I am told that my dad was told that I had actually done the crimes and was blaming my sister for them. Not the best scenario to have people who don't know you well believing.

The couple had no children ? Did they have wills ? What happened to their estate(s). ?

Skip had my sister and I. My aunt and their mom were in the will. As were family friends the Martinez family. Skip and Joni's debts were paid and law suits settled first. Then the rest was distributed. I have been trying to find a copy of the will as I had gotten rid of mine years ago after the frustration of going over and over it obsessively.

tamjit4 I realise your frustration but I believe you are doing a fantastic job at finding information from ppl in their lives. Try not to burn yourself out, feel satisfied that you are doing all you can and perhaps a piece of puzzle you find one day could be the the golden one.

I believe in the keep it simple for motive - from LE to their lawyer- professional hit, bad deals with the "wrong" ppl.

Hopefully some more sleuths might join in, I'll keep looking for any clues.

Tamijt4,

I'm sorry you have had so much trouble obtaining details from LE. I'm not sure how much help we can be, but obviously, we will do some digging/research :)

I am curious about a few things...

One of the news reports states that the Tillman's had lived for more than 10 years in Glendale and had only recently (3-4 months) moved to the Bramblewood Dr home. Was there a specific reason for this move?

I noticed that, over many years, Skip was listed as "registered agent" for several companies (i.e. Samala Corp, Nickel Ltd, and Cyber Coterie seems to be the most recent with a date of Dec 1998). I wonder if LE investigated other business deals he might have had... no lawsuits involved, but maybe a disgruntled partner or client ?

And, I read that Stephen Hansen and Lenny Feldsott worked on a documentary-type film regarding this case... was there a final product?? Especially interesting since these two actually worked with detectives on the case.

"... but this week Hansen will be interviewing the new detectives investigating the case. "At first the detectives told us the case was too sensitive," Hansen said. But it is the difficulty of the case that the producers and metaphysical investigators find so intriguing. The documentary plans to give metaphysical investigators access to several areas available to traditional detectives. The film crew will also interview the law enforcement side of the case and then compare the two stories, discovering if the metaphysical side came up with the same conclusion of the traditional. It’s hoped the work will shed more light on the baffling case."

http://articles.lacanadaonline.com/...b2a6733860088_1_psychic-tillman-case-bodies/2

I just sent an email to SB LE asking if they had considered anyone else. Also stated that I was not thrilled to have believed there was only one suspect (Hayes clothing designer). I sent the various leads I have had help finding here. They answered about a year ago saying new LE on cold case. He said he would answer my questions after looking at the case. That was with regard to their personal effects. 6 months later they replied with the same email answer. Literally replied by copying his first email and sending it back. I have stated I was concerned they don't want this solved and asked why they wouldn't let psychics any further access and why they refuse to contact the shows on Crime TV, no response.

I was told they had planned to move out of state (there is a quote somewhere on here about his new CPA license in another state) and they found the house so the move was delayed I suppose. I get the feeling there was a lot of back and forth on moving as things transpired or were resolved. Pending court cases etc.

I sent emails to all of the names mentioned in your quoted article except 1 female. I only received one response on

11/2/2015 Hi Tami -
I’m afraid I don’t have any helpful news for you.
I was part of a production company that was shooting a pilot for potential tv series and the Tilman case was one of the cases that were focused on.
The pilot wasn’t picked up and no further work was initiated for the production or the investigation.
I’m sorry I don’t have more information for you.
I wish you luck in your search and my prayers are with you.

Thank you again. Your little animated signature has kept me going for some time now. I finally just unleashed a half crazy, way too long email to the current detective assigned to the cold case. I received an email back asking for my phone number. I was afraid he was going to have me committed or tell me they were just done, or done talking to me. He finally called and was rather pleasant. Explained that inviting a cold case show into the case would basically leave them with all of their "cards on the table". So no matter what else they have, they have the details of that night, what they were killed with, etc. I had not spoken to a detective in years in person, so a phone call was nice. He seemed to get my "instincts" like feverishly calling that fateful night and not even really knowing why I was so upset or frantic until after the fact. I have been, over the years, trying to understand the ability to "know things" others don't and have always been good at taking the important details out of a conversation or written word and making use of it. Just writing this is helping me come to terms with what I am capable of. Lately, the ability to keep nagging at someone until they confess something added itself to the mix. And, more often than not, I find myself almost going to proofread something as I just write in an almost autistic state, sort of out of myself, and would surely delete it out of fear of people thinking I am drunk or nuts. Anyway, he is supposed to contact me if he has questions, I am writing to him when I have an idea or inspirational thought and he seems to have taken me off the suspect list. I am also very trusting, I don't know how really, but I may just be having the wool pulled over my eyes again. I asked him to check on rental vehicles in the area, well asked if they did, check rentals that may have come back with "evidence" in them or that didn't come back at all. I don't think the dog would have gone quietly, so there must be evidence somewhere where he was killed or a trunk he was held in. He would have barked the entire way I am sure, of his breed, and their friends said he went everywhere with them he would not have sat still with them somehow detained.

My kids are not allowing any quiet time so I might as well stop. I almost lost one of my twins to an untreated asthma attack at school last Friday. 4 days in the hospital has us very behind. More soon. Thank you for inspiring me.

I wanted to check in and thank you all again. Your help and thoughts and leads have really kept me going and helped me at least catch up to where the detectives actually were on this case. Got them talking to me. Got me thinking there might still be hope. I have been ill and almost lost one of my 9 year old twins on Christmas eve. I will just take a break and work on getting healthy I suppose so my "instincts" or whatever inspires my crazy emails to the LE. I check back periodically hoping someone has posted something that will get the ball rolling again. I had also hoped to be instrumental in solving this case in a way that help me gain better understanding of what seemed to be a gift, or ability, that might grow to help me, help others find answers when the physical clues leave them without resolution. As for this case, my fear that answers will pass away with each person involved who passes on, is for now the only "prediction" that I will be instrumental in seeing through. Funny, as i write that and start to lose hope, just as quickly a spark lights again. I found old notes I had been taking. Timelines I had written when I was going through rehab, then as my children were born. I wrote a couple of odd passages and will forward names I had just written down at the time to the detective I suppose and see what happens. They were names that just came to mind that I had no prior knowledge of. In closing and on a lighter note, with the recent powerball, I attempted to listen to my "inner voice" and pick the winning numbers. I had 2 numbers out of 5. So I guess I will keep poking my nose around trying to solve this murder and play the lottery once a week hoping that in this life I am able to solve this case or win a billion dollars---not sure which has better odds but at least I never gave up and wanted to save the world--if I get rich in the mean time it is bonus. Losing my dad and his wife was more than a big enough lesson for me that money can't fix everything nor can it buy it.

I check in every so often hoping for a miracle, some post, some hint that someone out there knows something. I wanted to thank all of you for getting me this far. There was so much i didn't know or people who would not share. Your tips, thoughts ideas, leads, suggestions helped me learn so much I had not known. I am at least able to get over being so angry that the suspect I thought was the only suspect had not been arrested. I still have to deal with the fact that many people were hurt and felt a loss due to my fathers' actions. I will continue to seek out more information and hope for a break. I don't believe taking his life and the life of his wife was something that someone should go unpunished for. Stealing money is a crime, killing someone for it is no less of a crime, and whoever is responsible shouldn't be free to walk around, free, with the rest of us.

Hi tamijt4, havent posted for a while however I often think of the Tillmans (their murder was cruel and unjust) and if not for you they be forgotten.

Couple of questions (as usual lol)

I'm not a facebooker but have perhaps a dedicated site for them?

Did you receive their death certificates, do you have Joni's dob?

Wondering about Joni's brother Craig, I found a Thomas Craig Elliott that passed in 2002, that ties in with the obit posted earlier in the thread

Is he the half brother? If so do you know how he passed?

Any luck with a copy of the will, would LE have a copy?

Does anyone know if fingerprints are automatically run through the system regularly ( as prints were on their car ) or does LE have to submit comparisons?

There is a facebook page in memoriam for them. Mostly a place to share thoughts and memories. Websleuths posted a request for information for them there as well.

I was working on getting the certificates or at least for my dad since I have no legal right to Joni's except maybe with respect to seeking justice for her as well. I have asked about the brother to their group of friends. I think he is still living but will let you know. Him and his father seem to have others with similar names that they continue to be confused with. I will let you know when someone responds to me with proper information.

So far no copy of the will. I don't think the LE could be bothered to share that with me, but am now inspired to ask. I was so fed up with all the questions and unanswered things that I finally threw out all of the information regarding the estate to spare my own sanity and let the executors do what they had to do.

I am not sure how that works as to fingerprints. Supposedly the evidence they have is DNA which they have run. Again you have inspired me to ask. Such specific questions need to be answered and asked. Exactly why I am grateful to you all. These just don't come to mind easily but matter and may inspire the LE to do something the have, to date, failed to do.

Sadly I think at this point, they have no intention of solving this case. One of the benefactors of dealings with my father worked in law enforcement to some extent and I don't feel that she will be investigated at all. Just my personal opinion, not based on anything more than their failure to consider her suspect to the best of my knowledge.
