Any perpetrator to be sure when asking about cameras would have to specifically ask if any particular camera was not in operation if they intended to return and murder someone in front of it. That would draw attention.

For me, if I see cameras I would assume they are real and working, and would not ask if they are operational.

Hi, I'm trying to find out, since certain individuals are asking about interested buyers or contractors asking if the cameras work, if anyone can remember the name of the contract companies that worked on the Sherman's residence before they were murdered and was there more than one contractor working on different projects ? I remember reading somewhere that Barry had taken some to court over unsatisfactory work because he seemed to litigate in most business dealings. If anyone remembers anything along these lines or am I imagining this possibility or confusing this with a different case. Thanks if you can help.

The house was 30 years old and many many contractors had been involved with it over the years..

The original construction was deficient. The repairs were paid for by the contractor (more likely by their insurance).

The TPS likely bungled a number of issues regarding the Sherman case from the outset. The current corruption scandal, with TPS Officers charged and alleged to be working with Organized Crime, does not do anything to build confidence either.

The 4 year wait to release the WM video was just one example of a TPS bad decision in the case, IMO.

However I do believe the vast improvements in camera and imaging technology in the past 9 years aided the Guthrie case investigators.

Just for clarity’s sake as this is frequently misunderstood: the Shermans did not get their home for free. This was the cost of the necessary repairs. The money went to fix the identified issues with the original construction. It was not profit in Barry’s pocket.

To assume as you state, would be taking a massive gamble if you were about to murder someone in front today them. Having said that. If WM is the perpetrator then he didn't care about being seen. His face was covered and he wore plenty of clothing.

Nope, not possible as they continued to live in the house for 30 years and had recently had an inspection done in preparation for the sale. The 2006 judgment amount would have been based on the amount they’d paid years earlier to fix the “disaster” that had been noted in 1991.

Nobody makes money on construction litigation.

I wonder if public/Crown Prosecutors (apologies if that is the wrong terminology) would do a deal, giving immunity to someone involved in the crime (perhaps a lower level role, such as look out or driver), if he offered to spill the beans and give evidence against the others.

They could provide a new ID and arrange for him to move to another English speaking country. With $35 million, he could afford plastic surgery.

Not sure an accomplice is deserving of the reward money. Leniency maybe.

Crowns in Canada frequently cut deals with accuseds; the legal system would collapse under its own weight if they did not. Typically the person will plead guilty to a lesser crime and agree to testify against someone else. The person does not get a new identity; they go to jail.

For example, Karla Homolka cooperated with the Crown and received concurrent twelve-year sentences for manslaughter. She was released at warrant expiry over 20 years ago.

In the Sherman case there is no evidence of a lookout or driver so there is likely nobody to cut a deal with.

Homolka tricked the crown. Imo

I don't understand: there are unsolved murders in Ontario going back decades. Eg, Lynn Harper, Audrey Gleve...
Many many cases of murdered and missing/probably murdered young women across Canada.

What makes the Sherman's case so deserving of unprecedented intervention from the government?

I have to disagree that politicians ever get involved in criminal cases.

Police work with individual Crown Prosecutors, who take the case to trial when they have sufficient evidence. They are part of the Attorney General's office, headed by the Deputy AG, a bureacrat.

ETA: also, there is a strong culture of non-disclosure of evidence before a trial. No way would lawyers share details with anyone outside the case, especially not a politician.
