IMO, the pilot slammed the plane onto the runway with such force it caused the right landing gear components to fracture, causing the right landing gear to collapse, causing the right wing to strike the ground, causing the wing to detach from the fuselage.

Plane that landed upside down in Toronto was descending at a high rate of speed, preliminary report shows

At 2:12:40, 3.6 seconds before touchdown, the rate of descent had increased. One second later the flight’s enhanced ground proximity warning system “sink rate” alert sounded, indicating a high rate of descent.

Then, 1.6 seconds before touchdown, the aircraft “was slightly below the glide slope” — a system that guides an aircraft down to the runway during landing for a controlled descent.

The right main landing gear of the plane made contact with the runway at 2:12:43.

''Vanessa Miles, who works as a flight attendant for Delta, is seeking US$75 million in damages, according to a complaint filed in U.S. federal court.'

''She said the injuries that resulted from the incident include a fractured left shoulder, a traumatic brain injury, post-concussion syndrome, knee injuries, back injuries, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“This accident was caused, at least in part, by (the defendants) knowingly assigning an inexperienced and inadequately trained pilot to operate the flight, demonstrating a reckless disregard for passenger safety in pursuit of operational efficiency,” the lawsuit alleges.''

“The investigation is ongoing and is currently in the examination and analysis phase,” the TSB said in its report. “Future work will focus on finalizing the analysis of all technical, flight operations, and laboratory results.”

'The federal agency published its preliminary report dissecting what happened in the moments leading up to the CRJ-900's crash-landing at Toronto Pearson on Feb. 17, which sent 21 people to the hospital.

I didn't work this particular crash but was still working for the feds at the time so I can't ethically comment on anything that hasn't been reported in public media. But just an FYI to take a close look at investigative outcomes on crew training/qualificiation and how much experience the Captain had in actual line flying operations (as opposed to training checking in simulators).

I can say, despite interet chatter the pilot flying was legally qualified. Their experience level on hiring was low but that is often normal at the Regional level and not a "red flag" in most situations. But in my personal "retired"opinion as a Captain (and Check Airman and APD) of 20 years before I joined "The Dark Side" would I have allowed them to land with the runway conditions in that wind? Absolutely not. My FO's knew if I said "this one's mine" it wasn't a personal slight, it was a learning experence, and the airline I flew for actually had in place requirements wherein an inexperienced copilot could not fly with an inxperienced captain (not saying that was the case here, I am not positive as to the PIC's actual line experience).
