Gherezghiher (Gary) Yemane, 63, was killed on May [27], gunned down near Ozerna Road between 69 Street and 165 Avenue in the city’s north end as he went on his regular evening stroll.
A nurse who worked at the Misericordia Hospital, he was one of four 2016 homicides that detectives consider random in nature and as a result more difficult to investigate.

Yemane — who worked for decades as a nurse and was employed at the Misericordia Community Hospital — was active in promoting leukemia awareness in the local African Canadian and Eritrean communities, and acted as president of the Nega Alem Memorial Leukemia Awareness Society. He also volunteered with Eritrean youth in Edmonton.
“He was a pillar of the community. He was a good man,” Edmonton P0lice Service Sgt. Steve Sharpe said Tuesday. “His family are puzzled at this time, as are police, to what would a potential motive be. There’s nothing to suggest why he or his family would be targeted.”
