but you can't get in at anytime without registering at the gate, even during the daytime

If you’re comparing Cold Lake Provincial campground to say, a secure condo facility with controlled access, no I can definitely say I’ve ever, never been at a campground in the province of Alberta where I live that has that sort of high security. I really doubt Cold Lake is the exception.

Campers need to register (vehicles included) in Cold Lake Provincial Park as well as others in the area. Very difficult to sneak in as attendants are on duty until I believe 11 pm. After that the gates are locked.

Some provincial parks are a little different from small, more casual campgrounds... I've been to plenty of campgrounds near public beaches that have free shower facilities for anyone whether you have a camp site or not.. I'm in Alberta and I think of a small camp/beach town I frequent called Ma-Me-O beach. When I was younger, I would visit Minnedosa, MB where there are free public showers near the beach as well.

That said, I think if K & B were showering fairly regularly, it was more likely at truck stops than campgrounds.

The campground is located within Cold Lake Provincial Park, which is open to the public for day use. No reservation is necessary to enter the park.

Totally agree. I have been at both Cold Lake campgrounds as well as Ma-Me-O. Totally different type of camping and campgrounds.

I am local and aware. I was talking about camping there! My point in all this before it goes on for pages and pages is that it is unlikely they camped there.

I've done a cross Alberta and BC trip and the easiest is to use truck stops. The camp grounds are quite well patrolled and they likely would have been spotted. Most campgrounds also lock up after 11/12.

By the time the investigation concludes, police will have the opportunity to piece together a full timeline including the duo’s 10 day route and stopping points between Port Alberti, BC ending at Sundance, northern Manitoba. Tips, traffic cams, CCTV, cellphone towers, google data, debit or credit card usage....

“With the manhunt officially over, RCMP said their focus will be on assessing all the evidence, not limited to forensics, statements, timelines and digital evidence, and have brought in behaviour experts as part of the analysis...”

<modsnip: rude> It began with how the two might’ve cleaned themselves up after getting stuck in the mud at Cold Lake because iirc it was later that same day when they were spotted via CCTV at the Coop in Meadow Lake, appearing clean and well groomed. It’s assumed they would've first attempted to get the RAV4 unstuck on their own, resulting in muddy clothes, arms etc during the failed attempt. That’s reasonable, so where might they have stopped?

The Cold Lake Provincial campground has shower facilities so that’s one possibility.

Does anyone have a link to the CCTV footage of C&L inside the gas station at Fort Nelson?

interesting I can't find the relevant information for Cold Lake

but here in Ontario they do

Additional Vehicle Permits must be purchased for all other vehicles at the time of registration.

Reservations - Rules and Regulations

I don’t know about Cold Lake but often access to camping sites and public lake access and day use picnic areas are shared. Therefore if the entrance to the campground was restricted, the general public would be prevented from lake access.

That's for overnight parking.

It's a matter of fact that at most provincial campgrounds day users could easily walk over and use the showers.

Does that exist but if so, I don’t ever recall CCTV released from inside the gas station.

I've never been to a campground where you didn't have to register at the gate and the gates are locked after hours. Unless they used stolen credit cards to get in.

Does Canada not have unfenced campgrounds? Is that because of grizzlies? Almost no where in the US are public campgrounds fenced, so that's a new one to me. It also would explain why Lucas and Chynna decided to do dispersed camping. It would not be amenable to me and DH to be locked inside a campground at night...

I've never seen a fenced campground, usually there's just a gate at the entrance where you register and campground/area info is provided.

Kam sure put cars in ditches a lot. Was he just a bad driver or was he trying to get caught?

One of the WSers, @gigitty (?), who is a fire fighter and auto repair worker mentioned that he didn't believe the damage to the roof and frame of the suspects' truck/camper was a result of the fire. Was there another foray into the ditch which wrecked the suspects' pickup?

If so, it's possible that the murders of LF and CD resulted from an attempted robbery of their vehicle.

It's been a while since I've been camping, but there's a road that goes into the campground, and that has a gate. People register for their campsite and pay. I'm not familiar with fences around campgrounds. Campgrounds are closed at 11PM for the safety of campers. Camping is not allowed on highways and day rest areas for safety reasons.

ETA: At the ones I've been at, visitors have to check in at the gate and the campers have to register the # of visitors to their campsite and name of the driver

Yes, usually there is a gate and check-in at the entry. The "IN" gate gets closed at night. But the "OUT" gate stays open. So a person can drive in even when no one is there.
