You know, it brings it home again how horribly sad all of this is. Just so hard to wrap your mind around ....
The whole thing is just so sad and senseless.

What amazed me was that he was just sauntering around like he had all the time in the world ... no rush, just taking his time. I didn't see a limp, though I can see what you mean about a distinctive gait.
And yes he looks completely different in the surveillance ... I'd have thought he was even older than 19 if I didn't know better. JMO
The picture of Dorian Gray.

I think that all makes a lot of sense, especially the surveillance store vibe. Do you think Kam's odd gait in the footage might be because his legs were cramping/uncomfortable from driving? They drove a lot of miles in a short amount of time. I'm thinking stops were minimal.

MOO

Totally, it made me think of how I've felt when I get off a plane after a 7-10 hour flight or driving or driving for several hours on a road trip and you get on your feet and you feel like you're moon walking while you're legs come back to life.

<modsnip: quoted post was removed due to no links>

And since everyone is sharing: On the surveillance video I got a "we-just-shoplifted-and-are-trying-to-look-casual" vibe. I guess we each see it differently...

I wouldn't be surprised, as I couldn't believe they didn't find a single thing in that entire store ....it is very interesting to see the differing opinions on the surveillance video.

It really is interesting to get everyone's take on the footage. I don't get a shoplifting vibe--though I see why some people do. But from Bryer, I definitely get a trying hard to act casual and incognito/failing hard at acting casual and incognito vibe when they're walking around.

With that 1080p security camera they would have been caught if they had.

Outside of maybe a multi-tool I just can't picture them shop lifting anything. I don't think they wanted anymore trouble or unwarranted attention. It could have even been as simple as they just wanted to use the bathroom. I'm still leaning on window shopping because they feel as though they're forgetting something crucial. Or it was just too expensive; "We'll find a Walmart." (Had to say it.)

To get caught with a camera you need two things:

- a camera pointed at the actual spot they shoplifted in

- somebody watching video from that camera

I had to put images of his face side-by-side to confirm it, and it really is quite noticeable when you're looking at several pictures of him in a row as opposed to isolated pictures in articles. MOO

All photos from MSM.

Kam looked like a happy person up until the surveillance photo where, IMO, he looks troubled. I’d love to know where things went wrong for the two of them but I suspect the report will generate more questions than answers once it’s finally released.

I have always felt it was a bathroom stop.

I also do not think we have seen the whole video, just a snippet.

I did consider that it may have been for their parents to see them one last time.

I wonder the same thing.

Incidentally, the friend who called him "a big gaming nerd" used those exact words: "a happy person."

True ... I also had wondered if their main priority in the store was to use the restroom... then window shopping after.

I think K&B were totally unconcerned with unwarranted attention, in that I think they were following a game logic, if you can call anything they did logical.

If the store had really good security cameras, you would think they also had comprehensive coverage. And also while someone might not have been watching it at the time, they could have determined if they were stealing upon later review and it probably would have been shown or mentioned.

Also why would they risk it? What would be worth shoplifting and risking getting caught, especially if they had a bunch of cash on them? They must have known they were reported missing. Clearly they were very afraid of getting caught based on how they behaved during other interactions with people.

Sometimes people act happy on the outside even though they're miserable on the inside. How many times do we hear about happy people suddenly killing themselves or overdosing, and all their friends are in shock?

Something caused them both to snap. JMO.

A high quality camera at the door, so they can ID robbers or shoplifters, does not imply a high quality system throughout the store. Maybe, maybe not.

And also while someone might not have been watching it at the time, they could have determined if they were stealing upon later review and it probably would have been shown or mentioned.

I would not expect it to be mentioned if they saw it after the fact.

- They clearly went in for a reason.

- Shoplifting is fun. (for some people)

- Criminals do not generally plan on getting caught.

- edit: and I highly doubt they had much money. Why only $20 gas?

To me, the differing opinions on the hardware store footage are more interesting than the footage itself. Interpretations of B&K’s body language run the gamut from “hey world look at us, we just murdered people” to “here we are, trying to look casual while shoplifting” to “we’re absolutely terrified but trying to hide it” to “where’s the bathroom”.

We interpret these kind of things based on our own internal narratives I guess. Human nature - it never fails to amaze me. And this case, with it’s lack of hard facts combined with So Many Opinions (!) is fascinating. (Also, it’s disturbing.)

My first thought was “trying to look casual while shoplifting” so I’m going to go with that as my final opinion on the footage (like a multiple choice quiz, it’s often best to go with your first answer).

I agree. I don't see anything remarkable in the video.

They are walking, that's all. And the camera angle is looking down on them (while in the store) and it's not a typical human perspective, so it is easy to read things into it. (By that I mean we are typically viewing people horizontally; not semi-vertically.) They are very, very tall and long-legged and I think they carry themselves in an immature, "colt-ish" manner. (Hand in pocket, buttoning shirt while walking). But I truly don't think there is anything to be derived from the way they are walking and how that might explain anything about them.

The camera that recorded them upon exiting would catch anyone in their least photographic moments. I know I don't walk out of a store worrying about how I look or what expression I have on my face.

If they were at all anxious, I doubt they'd have been in the store to begin with due to concerns about recognition or cameras. They may not know how security cameras truly work, but they'd have to know they were there at all.

Wasn't it George Bush who used to get "accused" of swaggering, and he said, "In Texas, we call it walking". Nothing to be interpreted in my opinion. Not to say they didn't have things weighing heavily on their minds; I'm sure they did. With all respect to everyone's takes on this, I really don't see anything here to be translated into odd behavior or gaits.

JMO and as always, I respect everyone else's opinions as well as learning from all of you.

That doesn't make any sense. Also, store employees said they interacted with them.

I would not expect it to be mentioned if they saw it after the fact.

Why not?

- They clearly went in for a reason.

Which could be any number of reasons.

- Shoplifting is fun. (for some people)

They don't look like they're having fun at all, especially not Kam.

- Criminals do not generally plan on getting caught.

Yes but these guys went into pretty much the closest environment to hell on earth, and killed themselves, rather than get caught. The two times they were forced to interact with people (the mud incident and the alcohol checkpoint) they seemed scared. Clearly getting caught was their #1 fear, even more than death. So why risk it?

- edit: and I highly doubt they had much money. Why only $20 gas?

They didn't need any more than that. It got them to the end of the highway.

SBM

That's literally how everyone walks while wearing large, clunky boots. Take it from me, I used to dress like I was straight out of the grunge era, LOL. Especially if they're 6'4"+ and probably kind of physically awkward/clumsy like these guys seemed to be.

With respect to the video and their mannerisms and gate, I always come back to the same conclusion or lack there of. I’ve never seen any video of what their typical gait or mannerisms were before that time. I don’t know how to compare.
