It said in the 60 Minutes interview that Bryer had "learning difficulties," so that was likely the reason why he attended. We also know he dropped out of school for a while and was probably behind. The impression I got from the website of that program is it was more for students who weren't doing well academically for whatever reason, but I could be wrong.
Also, part of that program is distance learning, but not all.
VAST - Eighth Avenue Learning Centre
"The Vast Education Centre is an alternative to the traditional school model. Now located at the Eighth Avenue Learning Centre, the Vast Alternate program is a certified public school offering students the opportunity to complete B.C. curriculum in Grades 9 to 12.
Vast operates on an individualized model with each student working on a course(s) in a self-paced, personalized format with assistance from qualified teachers. Art and Physical Education occur in the afternoons with a strong focus on academics and academic support in the mornings.
There are Youth Care Workers, one-on-one instruction and enhanced supports present at Vast to ensure that students have every opportunity to achieve their goals. "
I believe it was posted here that Kam graduated from the VAST program and his graduation picture came from an article about the program in a local newspaper.
Yeah, it's possible. But, they seemed to be pretty terrible at covering up their crimes in general, so I kind of doubt it, although I could be wrong.
Yes, and it's not unheard of in these kinds of cases. However my point was, it does raise the question of what the progression of events is that finally pushes someone over the edge into violence, and maybe how that can be prevented.
