There are a ton of snakes in Manitoba but none in the northern parts of the province as far as I know. There are snakes in parts of the N.W.T. though!
Thank you that answers my question. So some parts of Canada does have snakes, but not the region they were in.

I think it is the unbuttoned portion of his upper jacket as he is buttoning it up.
Yes, good eye! I see it now. That was making me crazy.

There are rattlesnakes amongst the sagebrush of Osoyoos/South Okanagan as well!

In the surveillance video, at exactly 0:11, you can see something like gloves (dark in colour) that perhaps BS has pulled out of a pocket - look over top of his left shoulder. It's so fast, that it's very hard to distinguish what that is? Here is video link:

Yes! Great eye! I can’t make out what it is but I see what you see.

Excellent observation! Very interesting as his left pocket looks so flat while exiting the store and we can't see if anything in his hands.
Actually, I think the poster 'elondriel' got it right. It's the unbuttoned portion of his jacket that flops over when he goes to button it up. At least, that's what it now looks like to me. Darn! Thought I was on to something. Aw snap!

Watching it again.. so when BS exits the store see the white neckline of the T-shirt under the collar? I don’t see white in the buttoning up part of the video. So at 11 seconds could he have pulled out whatever was covering the white shirt? Like a bandana?

I still think this specific portion of the video where they are walking is where at least one of them (BS) has used the washroom and where the video begins is right where he has exited the bathroom corridor. Right at the very start of the video 0-1 second it’s like Kam was standing waiting and twists himself to see BS walk out.

Oh yeah, lots of snakes, most but not all are harmless. I don't believe that Gillam or its surrounding area has any though, not sure why that is since areas that are further north, like N.W.T. have snakes. Maybe be to do with soil/ground conditions or something?

I find it so interesting! Could be a flap but that’s pretty dramatic to see it flap from behind. It’s not a double breasted coat which would have more of a flap.

In the screen grabs you took the one it looks like Bryer has on a dark shirt, with potentially a white under it and he is maybe three or so buttons from the top. The jacket is even open looking there so if it flopped while he was getting even higher up I think that would make that motion. I would think if he pulled something out of his jacket at that angle we would see his elbows move from their placement but instead they seem to stay in place. MOO
*and good eye to the one who caught whatever it is to begin with!

As band constables are not police officers they have no reason to check registration. Their only duty is to prevent drugs or alcohol from being delivered into the reserve because the band had made the decision they want their reserve to be dry.

Just to clarify, band constables, first nation or tribal constables are full-fledged police officers with the same training, uniforms, cruisers, responsibilities, authority, etc as any other group of police constables. I'm living in an area that has two First Nation police detachments.

Outside of the RCMP, there are enforcement officers who are not police officers but are appointed to serve certain law enforcement functions. It's possible that the two "constables" who ran the alcohol check were these safety officers.

I want to make that clarification just in case there is a misconception that a "band constable" is in some way less than equal to any other police officer.

It's just the collar of the jacket.

ETA: I was still a page or two behind. I see that this has been discussed again already :)

Yes, mostly harmless garter snakes and only in southern Manitoba. Likely the permafrost in the North makes hibernation nearly impossible.

Juvenile files are sealed until age 19 at which time they’re expunged is my understanding. The names of young offenders are also never released to the media.

Youth Records - Youth Justice

So if I'm reading this correctly, it says the records will be sealed or destroyed:
"Youth is found guilty and given an absolute discharge -- One (1) year after the young person has been found guilty
Youth is found guilty and given a conditional discharge -- Three (3) years after the young person has been found guilty
Youth is found guilty and sentenced for summary conviction offence -- Three (3) years after the sentence has been completed (any subsequent offence will result in an extension)
Youth is found guilty and sentenced for indictable offence -- Five (5) years after the sentence has been completed (any subsequent offence will result in an extension)"

And it says: "The period during which a record is open is called the access period. Once the access period ends, youth records are sealed and/or destroyed. However, if someone over the age of 18 with an open youth record commits another crime, the youth record will become part of that person’s adult record."

So, it sounds like to me, if these two had juvenile offenses, the records wouldn't necessarily be destroyed at age 18/19, depending on what it was.

Narcisse Snake Dens Update Page!

I was raised in the Narcisse, Manitoba area, and suffer from ophidiophobia - a deep-seated phobia of snakes. The harmless red-sided garter snakes should be migrating back to their vast underground dens right about now to hibernate for the winter. Their migration periods are truly the stuff of nightmares for many children who were raised in that area.

Hello steelybird, I'm equally as happy to clarify as have the faults in my theory disproved.

No, I don't think they played any part in either of the crimes.
But neither were they set up.
Framed, I believe they were.

The bigger picture is begun painting by two youths with zero life experience, zero work resume or ethic, setting out to find work in differing tall tales of somewhere 'up north'. My reading of some excellent analysis here is that they possessed the mind set of fifteen year olds.

I don't know much about gaming but for this: you can start over and over again anytime you've been 'killed', and being not allowed to play causes tantrums.

My theory has them tiring pretty quickly after the long first drive, and beginning to lounge around at campsites in uncertainty, drinking and plugged-in. They eventually were spotted by some seriously evil dude who offered them some easy cash, by driving a rav4 he'd just bought back to his cabin in Manitoba. They would meet up at the designated isolation, for their pay, then drive back to BC to collect their campertruck.

Early in their drive, the truck is then torched close to LD's corpse, with no intent to hide it. The pair follow their given route to Manitoba and are indeed met at some point later by the same guy. To get to his own vehicle for the pay-out and drive back, he leads them through the scrub before shooting them, with their own gun or one that can be traced back to LD. The rav4 is torched on his way out, acting as a further link.

The horrific killings require a certain rage and execution which appears to my experience as being way, way beyond anything these two kids were capable of producing. Then of course, there is drug-induced erratic behaviour which overrides all logic.

Sitting in a juror's seat for a moment, I'd be looking for no 'doubts' of guilt. There won't be a trial however, frankly everything I've read so far would have us dismissed in time for lunch.
Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it!

That, and maybe they don't have underground caves there? Garters use dens for the winter and there's a big colony of them up in the Fort Smith area. I wonder if the ground in Gillam is too boggy/swampy to support the kind of underground limestone crevices they need to survive over the winter. They have the same type of dens as Narcisse up in Fort Smith.

I can't imagine. I remember going there on a field trip as a kid and though they're harmless, I was terrified.

Yes, and it also says that if convicted of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder or aggravated assault, the record may be retained indefinitely.
