Why kill 3 people though? Why not just steal a car somewhere?

I'm just looking for an explanation of why they would take the RAV4, and not just carry on with their own truck. I don't know that they killed for the vehicle or if they killed and then decided to take that vehicle instead. We are definitely not looking at the smartest criminals because if they would have just hidden their truck or taken it, I bet we wouldn't know anything about them.

Hypothermia? Young men that age say "No way, I'm fit!" I tell them that people have died of hypothermia in the Pacific Ocean when it was 58F water

people don't realise water is one of the biggest killers in nature, be it not having water, drowning in water, too much water. flooding. or being in water leading to hypothermia

Probably not. I teach students that age. If I ask "how far can you jump off something onto a hard surface and be absolutely certain you won't break something" they'll say "20 feet" or even "30 feet." So we go outside and I point out the architectural details on our building corresponding to that (and they still think they could jump onto the sidewalk with virtually no or no chance of injury).

Hypothermia? Young men that age say "No way, I'm fit!" I tell them that people have died of hypothermia in the Pacific Ocean when it was 58F water and they don't believe me (people have died in warmer water, 58F is almost always fatal if in the water for more than a few minutes and especially if your head is going under).

Thanks, that is an interesting post. Much more detail and insight than I provided.

This pic was posted in a tweet from rcmpmb. Was there any confirmation it was Kam McLeod. Twitter

i haven't seen any official confirmation. I don't think it really resembles him all that much. MOO

I think they changed vehicles (burning their own) because they thought someone may have noticed them. Just passing a car within a few k's of the scene would be enough to start them thinking. Obviously it was a huge mistake but given the random nature of their initial target, not a lot of planning went into any of it.
If they just wanted to kill somebody, why not put them in the van and leave. It would be days likely before anyone would stop to look inside.I’m starting to wonder if they had a run in previously ,with the couple, that caused the suspects to be in a rage.IDK but something doesn’t add up.Its hard to understand the mind of a lunatic but these at their ages, it seems more likely for them to shoot up a mall etc. This just seems so specific.

Would it be best, once they've found them, to wait until night for the takedown?
Yes wait till they fall asleep. Element of surprise tactic :)

Because it was already loaded with camping gear. Probably had extra fuel, blankets, food, water, tent, GPS, etc etc

If these guys formed this plan in Port Alberni, I don’t understand why they didn’t just start killing people on Vancouver Island. They could have used the 2002 Washington DC case, about which much has been written, as a model. With no motive, and a decent gun, they would have had a good chance of getting away with it, at least for a time.

Too close to home for some reason? OK, the Vancouver area. Why go way up north on little traveled roads that make it more difficult, draining resources for one thing, and make it much harder to escape?

Or did this idea get hatched out of the blue on a legitimate job hunting trip? Does that make sense given that Bryer gave his father Alberta, not the Yukon, as his destination?

There’s a lot missing to this puzzle.

A bait car could be useful. As a side note. Lol

But why backtrack after killing the couple? Why not head east from the first crime scene? They still had their truck and camper. What made them head west and kill LD, take his Rav 4 and then head east again? Doesn't make sense.

I have been thinking about this exactly, and I think RCMP should use professional behaviour analysts to consider several possible reasons.

If they were confident that they left Lucas/Chyanna without any ID and unrecognizable faces (sorry relatives), they could have proceeded towards Whitehorse after the murders.

But maybe they became concerned after a few days, and decided to hide in a far away province. They needed a different car, and Prof. Dyck was unfortunately in their return path.

The Ontario border is not that far from Gillam. This could just be a matter of the Ontario Provincial Police helping with aircraft search.

there's nothing there but wilderness ... no roads, no houses, no services, nothing but trees and wild animals and lots of bugs - they'd be dead in no time

guarantee they already have and will continue to consult as this case drags on

See my previous reply to a similar thought. I think they were driving slowly towards Yukon, taking detours, when they came across Lucas/Chyanna somehow, and suddenly decided to murder them for whatever reasons.

The man who was called in to secure the scene until investigators arrived mentioned that he only noticed a small mark on Fowler other than it didn’t sound like there was obvious injury to them.

That’s why I said that the OPP may be helping with aircraft search, like including around Gillam :)

Exactly. There's literally nowhere to run. Miles and miles of roadless, trackless wilderness. Lots of muskeg and quicksand-like terrain. A vehicle won't do them much good there. They picked one of the worst places on the continent to try to survive in without significant training in backwoods living and crafting.

yes but would the fugitives venture there to begin with? I doubt it

Maybe they killed someone before they left and that's why they decided to leave the Island in the first place.

This kid went missing on July 9th from Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP - Missing youth- 14 year old Donovan Williams

I'm starting to wonder this.

First kill near home, then head "off to find work" when you already have a job. And odd timing because apparently one of their families was about to go on vacation.

Head north to hide, not sure they ever actually made it to Yukon and after all BS dad was told Alberta. Kill a nice young couple who were an easy target then move on in the night.

You're young and start freaking out a little so you decide to kill a man for his car, burn all your stuff to cover your tracks then run as far and as fast as you possibly can.

I, for whatever it's worth, think something mechanical likely happened to the RAV4, flat tire, pot holes gave them issues, etc. and forced them to ditch it. I don't think they had a back up car at that point.
