Possible to be making their way to Ilford and Kelsey.

Kelsey would make more sense IMO because then there are more options for future 'legs' of their trip.

Hopefully the RCMPs drones and helicopters can be put to use today. Yesterday it was reported by the Chief that it was too windy and a storm was expected to occur overnight. If that sighting was accurate, they can’t have gotten far, presumably in a weak and starving condition.

This is certainly the first official report I've read of this sighting confirmation.

Me too and I've been reading everything I can find all night!

“Split Lake is a dry community and the constables were checking for any alcohol, and didn't know who the men were at the time, he said.

"They did see maps and maps and camping gear within that vehicle that were driving," he said...”
RCMP broaden search for teens wanted in B.C. killings to York Landing, Man.

That’s an interesting bit of information. Not sure how it fits with the gas station clerk at Split Lake who said they bought $20 worth of gas and asked about buying alcohol but it likely aroused suspicion. I don’t imagine Split Lake has many white guys stopping in their First Nations community inquiring about alcohol, not realizing its a dry reserve.

We know for sure the fugitives were in Split Lake on Monday, July 22.

We also know for sure they were driving the RAV4, and it was on fire a few hours later.

We know nothing else for sure.

I’d bet they asked about the dry community to fact check the constables... maybe they got worried/paranoid they were being followed after that stop, surely this would have been first time encountering such a thing. It likely freaked them out so they asked the clerk who validated it and they carried on but ultimately decided to burn the rav! I for one do not think they are in YL but we shall see.

Manitoba RCMP press release actually requested that their officer's locations should not be posted online.

That doesn't apply to stating they're in York Landing. The suspects certainly know they're there, there are helicopters overhead and planes landing. Police are allowing press coverage and some photographs. Just not the number of officers or what exact part of town or the surrounding area they're in - which we won't know anyway.

That is an extraordinary sighting! So local First Nation constables stopped them, to check for alcohol, but didn't yet know they were wanted fugitives.

That will explain why they decided to burn the RAV4.

They thought that RCMP will be notified soon and there will be a road block if they drove back through Split Lake.

That is news to me too that they were stopped by constables checking for alcohol. I agree that them being stopped probably contributed to them burning the RAV4 and it may have made them change their plans altogether which could be how they ended up being spotted on foot near a dump (if that was them).

Yes, of course. RCMP is tweeting about general locations they are searching. They only requested EXACT location or photos of operations should NOT be posted online.

If they are on the run it is interesting to note that they asked about it being a dry community, they already stick out like a sore thumb, and this only draws more attention to them that they are not locals

<modsnip: quoted post was removed>

York Landing and Vancouver Island aren’t quite the same thing. People in the far north hunt and have guns. Indeed, if you are a civilian wildlife biologist, you are routinely required to have a gun license and gun in some areas as part of your job. Why? Well, for one thing, polar bears aren’t cuddly.

Inuit people in the north hunt. So do Indian people. So do my non-aboriginal neighbours in rural Newfoundland.

It’s a matter of recognizing that Toronto, a city of six million people, and York Landing, a community of 450 with no grocery stores in the middle of nowhere, are fundamentally different :)

Assuming the potential sighting is confirmed to be them - it was stated that K & B didn't have any bags with them. Do you think they had a camp set up somewhere, or have been travelling with nothing?
I think they likely have a small camp in the area. Probably no fires. Just their backpacks and maybe sleeping bags. The tracker dogs should have no problem finding them.

Roads in York Landing and surrounding the community are deserted, with the exception of police, as people have been told to stay indoors.

Lots of discussion here by people who haven’t read the article they’re talking about :)

I read the article. Here is the exact quote:
"...Mr. Bighetti said police radios weren’t working, so RCMP officers used gun fire as a means of communicating their location..."

Not necessarily a weird thing to ask. I've worked all over the North, and tourists would ask this to be respectful.

I have a feeling they asked because they were looking to purchase. When people are stressed, don't have any resiliency skills to speak of, they tend to turn to some form of substance...

It could have been a distraction, or a diversion. Why go out in daylight rummaging if you didn't want to be caught. They may have a plan in place and wanted to draw the attention there. It just doesn't make sense that both of them would be seen together in the daylight. It seems they should have gone to the dump at night, or have 1 gone, and another keep watch?

Exactly. I'm sorry, but having worked with many RCMP officers I would absolutely call to question this decision. It is stupid, puts people at risk, and invalidates what gunfire should signal - that you are in a firefight and need intimate support.

  • #976
So I just read the article. Surprised that my comment stands as it was written. You don't use gunfire in the place of radios. So, unless the info is wrong - someone has done an oops and made a stupid command decision.

I would actually place a bet on that information being wrong. RCMP has never confirmed that there were any shots.
They also absolutely would not fire their guns to communicate. I definitely agree with you on that. I personally believe the gun shots were just a rumor that got around.

Could they have been looking for alcohol to aid in the burning of the vehicle?

I was shocked to notice all the “how to burn a vehicle’ YouTube videos.
Alcohol is not a requirement nor does it appear any was sold, yet they burned the vehicle.

But I suspect there was a significant amount of getting high on either alcohol or drugs involved in this senseless, saga.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs developing a safety strategy for northern communities - NationTalk
July 29, 2019
"Treaty One Territory – Winnipeg, Manitoba _ The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is currently developing a safety strategy for northern First Nation communities in Manitoba including Fox Lake Cree Nation, York Factory First Nation, and War Lake First Nation, in light of the two fugitives at large. The B.C. murder suspects are said to have been spotted in Gillam, Manitoba, where a massive ground search is currently underway.

Acting Grand Chief Sheldon Kent stated, “We are very concerned for the safety of the people in our northern communities, especially the Fox Lake, York Factory, and War Lake First Nations. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs wants to ensure that our people are vigilant and exercise caution until these fugitives are apprehended. We are fully cooperating with the RCMP’s efforts to bring these young men into custody, and AMC is working on a strategy to help keep our families safe.”

As part of the strategy, the AMC has approached the Bear Clan Patrol to offer its support and services. The Bear Clan Patrol is a community based solution to crime prevention, providing a sense of safety, solidarity and belonging to the communities they serve. They are now coordinating teams to fly to each of the communities to offer their services as support to the First Nations families"

The press there are operating under police approval and won't be publishing that detail. The residents now know not to post that information as well, and posts from the area have stopped. We are not in possession of any leaks from this isolated community.

It seems weird to be that IF they took the ferry (which I doubt they did) that they were not seen sooner looking for food?

It seems to me that they could have walked through the bush from Gillam to YL. It would take a couple days, but it has been virtually silent for the past few days so they would have had time to get there, and when they did finally reach some civilization they would be desperately looking for food.

After the hydro corridor map was posted, I am 50/50 on ferry vs hike.

It is also possible that they did some hiking to avoid roads, and then took the ferry from Split Lake. They had several days.
