Jailed colonel attempts suicide
http://www.kingstonwhigstandard.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2519830

KINGSTON, Ont. — Col. Russell Williams made an elaborate and desperate bid to kill himself over the Easter weekend, QMI Agency has learned.
Sources at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee, Ont., tell QMI that at roughly 5 a.m. Saturday, the accused serial sex killer wrote a suicide note in mustard on the wall of his segregation cell.
The condiment note was a farewell message saying his affairs are now in order and his feelings are too much to bear.

Aware that he was being closely watched, Williams, 47, jammed the lock in his cell door with cardboard and foil in an attempt to prevent staff from getting into his cell quickly and stopping him, sources said.
Using a cardboard toilet roll stuffed with more foil and cardboard, Williams stuffed it down his throat in an apparent bid to suffocate himself, sources said.

Just read the articles myself and came in to post them. An interesting approach - toilet roll stuffed with foil...Another article states that he did trial runs by stuffing a pencil into his cell lock to see how long it would take for jail personelle to reach him. Hmmm...And why would someone who has already shown suicidal tendencies be left to his own devices with a pencil???

ETA - Another article about the same attempt:

ETA - "the condiment note"...He wrote a note with mustard.

Wow! I think few of us are surprised by this attempt (in fact, some have posted about it weeks ago), but the method is totally weird! I'm almost speechless.

I wonder what he meant by his affairs being in order. Hope it means that he has confessed to every crime he has committed and helped LE to prove them.

Would it be wrong to say that it sickens me? I hope he does make it to court. And I hope that if he is convicted he goes missing from his special cell and enters the general prison population and has to fend for himself.

But that is just my opinion, and it isn't worth much:)

antiquegirl: I immediately thought of the Globe&Mail article, and hope LE has asked him questions about ALL other possible cases:
Since then, Col. Russell has been behind bars at the Quinte lockup and has been co-operative with the police, sources close to the investigation say.

For several days after his arrest, he made no effort to retain a lawyer. And even after Mr. Edelson was hired to assist him, he continued to speak to police – a highly unusual move for an accused murderer who has counsel.

The dynamic, however, appears to have changed. Col. Russell still appears anxious to answer investigators’ questions, but the ground has now been gone over so thoroughly that there are few left to ask, and police visits to Quinte are becoming fewer, a source said.

“He wants to keep talking and keep talking, and stay in charge of the conversation,” the source said, “but [police] think they have pretty much the whole story.”

I wouldn't be so sure that he can/has confessed to all that he has done since his lawyer stepped in...Probably,he doesn't feel he can or wants to face the scrutiny. Without question, given the immense silence, there is much that we still don't know. I'm content to know that, in the meantime, he is nicely tucked into his "baby doll".

I have a feeling that any new suicide attempts will now be thwarted by the constant watch he's under. It seems apparent from the article quoted by Hazel that LE has all the info they need and want, which indicates that he has made a full confession and there is nothing more to be gleaned. Wouldn't the next logical step be a plea of guilty and no trial necessary? It seems a given that his life as a free man is over. May he live a long and tortured existence in a small cell and may his family find peace and strength.

SS & SB: Perfect! I see no reason why RW can't now be known here as Col. Mustard. A little black humour about a serial killer (alleged) is just what we need. That just made my day.

I'm betting they have all they need for the cases he is currently charged with, but that there may well be future information-gathering in other cases that have yet to be thoroughly reviewed. I suspect there is a bit of a hiatus right now, but that LE will be paying more visits in the future, after they have the current ones well wrapped up.

As an aside ... while he may not go down in Canadian history as the most prolific of serial killers, I think Col. Musturd may well be the only one to ever attempt suicide by toilet paper roll. Now, that's NOVEL. Maybe somebody could bake this guy a cake with a plunger tucked inside?

And I'm betting that your spelling of the name is NOT a typo. ;)

Col Mustard, in the cell, with a toilet paper roll....game over!

The statement "unable to bear feelings" was curious to me. I wondered if he might possibly be experiencing remorse for his wife or the families of the victims. This article sheds some light on the many possible "psychaches" a prisoner can experience. I hope that they take this risk seriously from here on in. He needs to stay around and due his "duty".

Supposedly, he trial rigged his suicide the day before by putting a pencil in his cell lock...Wouldn't it have been better to preserve the pencil for the suicide note...I mean, instead of the mustard? Something doesn't seem quite right in the reporting or perhaps the "handling" of RW...I mean, did he really have a pencil and instead chose to try to kill himself with toilet paper stuffed with Alcan?

Huh?

Any feelings he might have relate only to himself. He's been caught. Perhaps that is what is so "unbearable"? If so, it's a good thing that he's having to put up with such emotions strapped into whatever girdle he has to be strapped into.

It also apparently took 15 minutes to gain access to the cell after the pencil was used. You would think 15 minutes would have been long enough to be successful in suffocating oneself. You would think that if he had put that much thought into suicide, that he would have taken advantage of the fact that he had a pencil and not use it for experimental purposes. Makes me wonder if the "attempt" was meant for success or if it was a pathetic gesture for attention.

I think he is trying to get a one way ticket to a psych ward! That 15 min. doesnt make sense if he had a wad of tin foil down his throat...I think he is trying to outsmart someone....still trying to have his control.
