Murder case against ex-commander put over to April
CTV Ottawa
Updated: Thu Mar. 25 2010 10:47:10 AM
The Canadian Press
Williams, 46, appeared in a Belleville., Ont., court today via video, looking tired and clad in an orange prison jumpsuit.
Outside court, Canadian Forces observer, Lt. Col. Tony O'Keeffe, said Williams is being held in segregation in a Napanee, Ont. jail.

O'Keeffe added that Williams is not the man he once knew and that he no longer has empathy for his former friend.

Thank you Valleyboy :) I was questioning the CTV (Canadian Press) article that I posted, where they are still saying 46, not actually questioning his current age ;)

Colonel Williams makes court appearance
Timothy Appleby and Colin Freeze
Belleville, Ont. — Globe and Mail Update Published on Thursday, Mar. 25, 2010 8:47AM EDT Last updated on Thursday, Mar. 25, 2010 11:32AM EDT

Long article, these are just a few snippets
His military buzz cut grown out into a shaggy widow's peak, Colonel Russell Williams was the first inmate from the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee to appear, on what was a crowded court docket.

The former commander of 8 Wing/CFB Trenton spoke just twice, when asked if he understood the proceedings.

“Yes, thank you,” he replied

His case was put over to April 29 to allow his lawyer, Michael Edelson to digest what was described in court as a “substantial” disclosure package.
He is also a suspect in a four-year string of bizarre house burglaries, most in southern Ontario and the Ottawa area, in which women were robbed of lingerie
Since then, Col. Russell has been behind bars at the Quinte lockup and has been co-operative with the police, sources close to the investigation say.

For several days after his arrest he made no effort to retain a lawyer.

And even after Mr. Edelson was hired to assist him, he continued to speak to police - a highly unusual move for an accused murderer who has counsel.

The dynamic, however, appears to have changed.

Col. Russell still appears anxious to answer investigators' questions, but the ground has now been gone over so thoroughly that there are few left to ask and the police visits to Quinte are becoming fewer, a source said.

“He wants to keep talking and keep talking, and stay in charge of the conversation, but (police) think they have pretty much the whole story,”
the source said.
Col Williams asked no questions about his family, nor about the mood at the Trenton base Col O'Keeffe added.

"He hasn't said a word... I'm guessing he's not getting a lot of rest."

BELLEVILLE, Ont. — The case against the former base commander of CFB Trenton, Ont., accused in the deaths of two women, has been adjourned until April 29.

Col. Russ Williams, 46, was scheduled to appear in a Belleville court Thursday via video link on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of sexual assault.

Attorney General spokesman Brendan Crawley said the next court appearance, expected to be a bail hearing, will also be by video.

Williams is charged in the deaths of Cpl. Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd, along with sexual assaults that occurred during two home invasions this year in Tweed, Ont.

From that same Globe & Mail article:

But from the moment of the roadblock he was under constant surveillance, and on Saturday he received a call from the OPP asking him to come into their office on downtown Elgin Street the next day for an interview.

All this time I had been under the impression that LE went directly to his home in Ottawa on that Sunday afternoon/evening, and that afterwards he had agreed to go with them to the Police Headquarters at Elgin Street. I don't know why/where I got that idea from? I had also been thinking that RW was still in Tweed on Saturday, and that he only drove to Ottawa on Sunday.

I thought the same. Therefore if this is all correct from the media, he was interviewed on the Saturday and then went to his home in Ottawa and was arrested there on Sunday. hmmm I wonder what went on in that interview for them to not arrest him that day, but very suddenly the next.

I also came across this article...Belleville had a busy court room today with murder charges...

Murder Suspects in Belleville Court today
Posted on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 - 8:30 am

Sorry this is off topic, but I wanted to share this info that I stumbled across... all I can say is WOW...we pay these monsters...please sign the petition!

Stephen Harper wants serial child killer Clifford Olson’s government subsidies cut off. And the Prime Minister has asked Human Resources Minister Diane Finley to figure out a way to do it.For the past five years, Mr. Olson has been collecting $516.96 in Old Age Security and $652.51 ...in Guaranteed Income Supplement for a total of $1,169.47 a month and $14,033.64 a year. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation and a victim rights group have been lobbying to have this changed. Yesterday, the CTF launched an on-line petition asking that incarcerated convicts not received OAS and GIS. So far they’ve 4,900 signatures. Online

This brings up questions I've had. RW will be paid until there is a verdict in his case. If the verdict is "guilty", he will be required to repay his wages. Meanwhile, he's accruing CPP, pensions, health benefits, vacation pay, etc. Will all these other things be repaid, too? And how will he repay it after paying his lawyer? Is he paying his lawyer? If not, who is? How far will the government go to get its money back? Foreclosure on the torn-apart home? And what happens if there is a divorce claim/assets put into the spouse's name in the meantime? Would this be seen by the courts as an attempt to avoid payment?

I know of another case where a defendant signed all his assets over to his wife, then tried to get Legal Aid's help. He took Legal Aid to court. This was denied, as it was seen as a blatant attempt to abuse the system, when the defendant had been a wealthy person at the time charges were laid. The judge told him to find another way to pay, because he wouldn't get a cent from Legal Aid.

The confusion about the time line of events that week-end is understandable. The various media reports have been conflicting. However, this last Globe & Mail article is the most recent and by the journalist commissioned to write the book about the case. So I'm going to choose to believe it.

According to this, he was already in Ottawa on Saturday when he was interviewed by LE. In fact, the article claims he left for Ottawa on Friday (the day after being stopped at the roadblock.)

No mention of the tires was made to Col. Russell and he went home that night, before heading the next day to Ottawa ...

... that Saturday he received a call from the OPP asking him to come into their office on downtown Elgin Street the next day for an interview.

The LE office on Elgin St. (#474) is in Ottawa, so RW was already in town then.

So, if this is all true, the correct time line of events is:

Thursday evening - RW stopped and questioned during roadside stop. LE surveillance begins

Friday - RW drives to Ottawa

Saturday
- LE contacts RW via telephone and asks him to go to headquarters for questioning

Sunday
- RW is questioned for six hours and subsequently arrested

Monday
early morning - Jessica's remains are found in Tweed

*(I think it's possible that there is an error here, too, and that RW didn't go to Ottawa until Saturday morning. But I believe that he was definitely there by sometime Saturday when he was phoned by LE.)

Does anyone else remember a quote from Mrs Jones in the media that RW was being watched by men with binoculars from across the lake on the saturday before his arrest on sunday?

I remember it, too. Did she say they were watching RW, or just that she saw LE with binoculars? I'll try to find the article.

Frankly, after Mrs. J. said that they got an anonymous phone call calling her husband a murderer before there were actual murders, I don't have the greatest faith in her statements.

I found the article:

Bonnie Jones said they'd noticed Saturday that there were curious eyes on the opposite shore.

“There were undercover cars across the lake with binoculars so we knew someone was under surveillance,” she said. “We hoped it wasn't Larry.”

There are other possibilities here. Maybe LE phoned RW while he was still in Tweed on Saturday and he told them he was going to Ottawa. LE then told him to show up at their Ottawa office. The media seems confused about this time line, so why shouldn't we be? The one consistency is that RW was questioned and arrested in Ottawa and not in Tweed.

They could well have been hanging out making sure that no one entered or exited the property. It seems prudent to me to be mindful of a suspects house, and since they didn't formally charge him until the Sunday they wouldn't have parked cruisers in front of his doorway until that time.

But that is just my opinion:)

IMHO, the only ones that know the exact timeline would be LE (obviously), RW, his wife (maybe some family and friends of them), and now with the disclosure, RW's lawyers.
Thanks to RW's neighbours interviews (Tweed & Ottawa neighbours), and the known facts that have been released by LE to the public (press conference and statements), we the public can speculate and come to some logical conclusions. IMHO, perhaps journalists are doing the same?

As you said antiquegirl, there are some events that we know for a fact, like the roadside canvass and that RW was questioned and arrested in Ottawa.

The one thing that struck me the most about this last G&M news article was that phone call. I couldn't believe that LE would call someone to ask them to go to police headquarters the next day for questioning. If this is true, I can only think it was part of a very-well thought plan. Forgive my ignorance, but is it common practice for police to call a suspect to make an appointment for him to be questioned the next day?

all is MOO

...ohyes...and the military, and the rcmp and the opp and NO NEWS. He showed up in court. We get a god-awful sketch of the man that doesn't even look like him, a rehash of everything that has been repeated tenfold in the media and NO NEWS. I am generally not cynical about law enforcement or the media but my hinky-meter is way up high on this one! I don't believe for a second that this 47 year-old man only started acting out on his impulses in September of 2009. I think that there is much more beneath the surface and I hope that it comes to light.
