Something is amuck indeed!!
The news lately has me nervously touching my neck and looking over my shoulder in public. My adult daughter and I have discussed getting teeny pistols for our purses and now we are talking about some kind of self defense class that specifically deals with protecting yourself quickly when someone enters your "personal space".
Problem is at 52 I don't recognise everyone so fast anymore, so if you read about the lady who put her local pastor in a choke hold when he approached her for a hug. Well, it will probably be me.

RIP to the young lady that lost her life. How horrible for her family. Senseless, and sad.

matou;12249293]But why contact the media KWIM? Why not reach out to a friend?

IMO_ safe read ran a quick spell check - that is why some is blue I think??

To the media, and us, this is random killing.I would think, however, in her mind, at the time, there was a whole "reason" or delusion about why she had to do it.

When I first saw victims pic, I thought it looks like it could be her when younger - employed etc ......

and if paranoid she could have been a secret service agent on a mission to kill her on at the Shop Mart when she walked in ...you know what I mean

when they are locked in a delusion it is real for them -- period, you actuallydon't try to reorient them, it escalates them.

If when they focus on you as the enemy is pretty much the only time you attempt to reorient to somedegrees by assuring them you mean know harm, are there to help them, highlight they are safe etc. If they continue to escalate they are placed in seclusion, and sedated, and evaluated later to see if they can handle being on the unit.

Typically I found the delusional folks more impulsive than schizophrenics. Most of the time , you and your staff can tell someone with schizophrenia is escalating, and have time to get your team together. They pace more, they are gesturing, uttering, and then everything picks up.

If the unit is busy, you can call a code to get more staff ready to help with the take down. You have time (not always!) to get other pts out of the way and safe.

Typically the whole unit does escalate tho when someone starts acting out. Depending on the mix of the unit it can be tense, some times an escalation can escalate another pt .

Its very organized, a "take down" - when done well ,it is 5 people, one for each limb and one for the head . Only one person talks as the group slowly approaches.

If done well, a lot of times you can deescalate them and they can stay on the unit, in a quiet place. (stimuli) . Smoking was very critical, in a lot of instances you can take them out for a smoke , with no other pts and staff with you

In most instances its actually easier to "orient" someone hallucinating than someone who is experiencingdelusional thinking - they are very convinced that you are the devil and intend to cut their head off. It is intense stuff.

Again if they escalate they are taken to seclusion and sedated.

An unemployed individual dressing for work on a daily basis , in all likelihood is not oriented or living a life based on reality - the clothing is making it harder IMO, for a lot of folks to believe its real .............

It IMo, is also a reflection of society as a whole who still today have no real understanding of the many "colors " and "shades" of a mind gone astray.

It seems unless a person is living on a sidewalk talking to trees , mental illness is not real. Holmes was in a PHD program, Ft Hood was a doctor etc.

I think it makes people feel safer that people "snap". With all the violence we have endured the last several years it befuddles me why it seems as if society is not understanding mental illness more or better. Very few "snap", it is more like a boulder rolling down a mountain.

It is congruent to some degree, that the media cant grasp that a "psychotic" individual cant plan. The last year IMO it seems media would get more knowledgeable that that is not true.

It seems to me, for the media, that "employment" means no "real" illness. If we look at the past several years - that simply is not true!

IMO, it makes her lack or orientation more convincing - she authentically believed she had to go to work........

Ill or not, our beliefs, if we think about it, actually influence all of our lives on a daily basis.......IMO

I wonder if her sending the National Post an email was a well planned defense for being mentally unwell? She knew LE was looking for her and her photo was everywhere. Why contact the National Post instead of the police?

She was paranoid. She probably thought the police were part of some secret government conspiracy, doing mind control experiments on her or something. Moo.

God I just thought oh boy are we now going to go into copy cat mode -- remeber when there was a phase of people walking up to folks with axes and machetes a while ago, there was a bunch of em in a short spate all over

Don't panic, you're a lot more likely to be killed in a car accident than in a random act of violence.

completly off topic ! I am old, but out of curisity I checked how they are rolling out Star Wars tomm WOW !Never seen one could care less

but wow at one theatre alone they are spooling it 34 times (not a typo!) tomm with tons of starts tiimes at 1 2 3 4 5 AM yes AM

in fact there were more past midnight screenings than during the day!

The future has arrived folks! Disney World just installed metal detectors !

Regal Cinemas, the biggest movie-theater chain in the United States, will start to search ticket-buyers' bags before they enter any of its movie .

I thought this was brillant :

Just to unpack that for a minute: Is he really saying that expecting to not be murdered at the movies is the functional equivalent of seeing a movie that isn’t in 3D? That staying alive through the end credits is some extra-special treat, like an Imax screen?

Don't go the "teeny" pistol route. Most all women start out that way (I did) and later realize it was a mistake. Take a class and go with something like a Lady S&W .38, that model has been the most popular women's carry pistol for many many years because it is so well designed. The "teeny" guns will strike you as almost worthless as you learn more but the .38 will always have a place.

Police would never carry anything smaller than a .38 as a backup gun and they are experts; trust their judgement.

I truly appreciate the advise Sonya610. This is the first time I ever really considered getting a firearm and permit. The desire to do this actually surprised me.

Rohinie Bisesar, charged with second-degree murder, to stay in custody until new year
^ Includes an interesting clip of her lawyer

Bisesar could face a minimum sentence of life in prison with no parole for between 10 and 25 years.
..
Bisesar will remain at a prison in Milton, Ont., until her next court appearance on Jan. 8. Her lawyer said it has been hard to confer with his “meek and quiet” client while she has been in custody, surrounded by other prisoners.

“Everybody’s yelling and screaming,” he said. “It’s similar to American TV.

Accused in PATH stabbing ‘like a deer in the headlights,’ lawyer says

Rohinie Bisesar will be back in court in January to face a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Rosemarie Junor.

A woman charged in a downtown knife attack last week made a brief court appearance Friday to face a charge of second-degree murder before returning to a jail cell.

Rohinie Bisesar, 40, had charges against her upgraded after Rosemarie Junor, 28, died from her injuries after clinging to life in hospital for almost a week.
...
Barry said Bisesar’s next court appearance would be Jan. 8. He said no date is set for when she might have a bail hearing.

Great advice.

I have a 22 (shoot to injure, small and light, great for target practice) and a 45 (shoot to kill but too much kick for much target practice) A 38 would be just right!

I don't conceal carry.

Excellent article on the suspect and what was going on in her life in the months before she attacked her victim.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...tabbing-to-remain-in-custody/article27844715/

Sadly I wonder if "I felt the need to be extreme to see if it would work" meant the stabbing was a cry for help, for her family to take her back and get her grounded and perhaps working in some ordinary job?

I wonder why she held on to the delusion of having/chasing a financial sector job for 10 years? I mean, why not give up on that, move on, take a job as an admin assistant somewhere and work your way up to something?

Somebody put a lot of money into her education. Perhaps her parents expected her to make it big and wouldn't accept anything else and this strange situation ensued?

I don't think RB was crazy enough to not understand the difference between right and wrong, and I think this was all a very sad cry for help.
