''He told officials he wanted to go visit siblings and friends in Libya. Mr. Zehaf-Bibeau, whose father is Libyan, was issued a Libyan passport in 2000. Embassy records show Mr. Zehaf-Bibeau had last been to that country in 2007''

We heard that the shooter was job hopping and homeless but never that he travelled overseas previously.
We knew he was trying to obtain a passport .... but had not heard that he possessed a Libyan passport previously.

Where is Z-B's father now? I recall that he was referenced in some of the early media reports, but was he ever quoted? Is he here in the country right now? (I understand that he may not want to step into the media spotlight though.)

Last I read was Tunisia but then again I read he still resides with the mom in Laval even though they are divorced.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/1...eaus-mother-i-cry-for-the-victims-not-my-son/

remember this woman is a policy maker does her writing reflect her background?

"“Hi, I am writing this note on behalf of my husband and myself. No words can express the sadness we are feeling at this time. We are so sad that a man lost his life. He has lost everything and he leaves behind a family that must feel nothing but pain and sorrow. We send our deepest condolences to them although words seem pretty useless. We are both crying for them. We also wish to apologize for all the pain, fright and chaos he created. We have no explanation to offer. I am mad at our son, I don’t understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time. You write that our son was vulnerable, we don’t know, we (he) was lost and did not fit in. I his mother spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that. So I have very little insight to offer. We don’t wish to be part of any media circus, we don’t think it will add anything to the conversation. Please respect our privacy although many may not feel we deserve any … Once again we are so sorry. Susan Bibeau and Bulgasem Zehaf”

still looking for the Tunisia reference (upthread somewhere)

and

father still shares residence with shooters mother even though they have been divorced

"
''By the summer of 2013, Zehaf-Bibeau had moved again.Back then, Montreal resident Bari Malki peaked out of his suburban home across the road from the one that he says Zehaf-Bibeau’s parents, although legally divorced in 1999, still share."

"While Michael Zehaf-Bibeau sank into misery, his faith in Islam growing along with his drug addiction and psychological torment, his estranged father was living it up.

Around Montreal’s Crescent Street bar strip, people describe Bulgasem Zehaf as a baby boomer bon vivant who owned a bar, drove a Porsche and partied like a man half his age.''

further in same link:
"his father, who had multiple business interests and shuttled between Montreal and North Africa.

A federal government source said Friday that Ms. Bibeau is now on leave from her job as a deputy chair at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Acquaintances say Mr. Zehaf has been in Tunisia in recent months and continues to run a vehicle import and export business he established in Canada. In a statement, both parents expressed anger at their son over the shootings, and declined to be interviewed."

so there you have it:
still share same residence post divorce
father overseas : splits time between North Africa and Montreal

"He was in touch with her again recently but only because his religion “dictated” he “be good to his parents.”

Bibeau said when her conversations with her son were “one-sided” — he talked about religion, she listened.

She said Michael told her over lunch recently that he planned to go to Saudi Arabia — not Syria as the RCMP have claimed — to study the Qur’an, believing he’d be happier in an Islamic country where people “share his beliefs.”

If the problems with home grown terrorists, relates to mental issues, as opposed to political/ religious ones, will that change how LE respond to mentally ill individuals brandishing weapons ?
If someone is behaving in a threatening or erratic manner, should LE assume the person might commit a terrorist act, and effectively stop the potential threat,
or just talk to them, because they are mentally unwell ?

Everyone with a weapon that is threatening will be treated the same, regardless of mental health issues. That's how it has always been.

Prominent psychiatrist cautions against rush to portray Ottawa shooter Zehaf-Bibeau as ‘crazy’ ...

... When something so horrific, bizarre and destructive happens, everyone searches for meaning, “and the natural, first thing that comes to mind is, well, he must be crazy,” Frances said.

“But most criminals, most substance abusers and most political or religious extremists are ‘mentally unbalanced’ at least some of the time,” he said. “Our man was all of these.

... Mental illness can make people more susceptible to extreme religious or political teachings or fanaticism, he said. The killer may have “globed onto” radical teachings that brought meaning “to what was previously his meaningless life ...

From The Star today -

And here’s a vote of confidence in a Parliament that will not jump to conclusions in the heat of the moment and a government that will resist the temptation to use last week’s events as an impetus to move into new, unneeded realms.

Before we move too far, time and perspective should force us to ask whether we were dealing with mental health issues last week rather than terrorism, even as the RCMP said Sunday it had “persuasive evidence” that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau’s attack was driven by ideological and political motives.

weapons old gun and knife

" A knife he carried was taken from his aunt’s property in Mont Tremblant. “Zehaf-Bibeau had lived there years earlier and appeared to have stored the knife on the property.”

Police were still not sure where he got the shotgun but suspect it came from the same place. “It is an old and uncommon gun. We suspect that he could have similarly hidden the gun on the property but our inquiries continue,”

CBC article on shared similarities between Couture-Roleau and Zehaf-Bibeau

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/micha...couture-rouleau-their-shared-traits-1.2812241

"Couture-Rouleau and Zehaf-Bibeau also tangled with authorities over their passport. Couture-Rouleau's passport was seized after he was arrested at the airport in July while on his way to Turkey. Zehaf-Bibeau was apparently frustrated over the time it was taking to obtain a Canadian passport and the time it would take to get a Libyan passport. The RCMP said passport issues likely played a role in both the attacks."

Find it hard to believe any media source will be able to verify this statement from the RCMP -

Zehaf-Bibeau subsidized his pre-attack activities from his own earnings, saved while employed in the Alberta oilsands, the statement said.

"He had access to a considerable amount of funds. We are investigating all of his disbursements in the period leading up to the attack," the RCMP said.

Can't see how his criminal background would land him a job with any company involved in the Alberta oilsands. Between drug use, serving jail time and living in a BC shelter, when exactly did MZB work and save money?

This seems dubious as well, imo -

RCMP also said they believe a knife Zehaf-Bibeau was carrying was taken from his aunt's property in Mont Tremblant, Que. He had lived there years earlier and appeared to have stored the knife on the property.

Authorities are still looking into the origin of the gun used in the deadly attack at the National War Memorial that left 24-year-old Cpl. Nathan Cirillo dead. Police called it an old, uncommon gun that Zehaf-Bibeau could have also hidden on the property.

For the last few years, these property owners never came across weapons hidden on their property? If MZB had 'access to a considerable amount of funds', why didn't he purchase weapon(s) in the last couple of weeks? Why take the time to see if something old is still where you left it years ago? He would need to clean the rifle to make sure it worked. He had that knowledge?

Imo, Paulson should have finished his inquiry on the gun before making an assumption that he passed on to the public. There's no serial number on the gun to trace? Aside from the fact the whole gun registry was kicked out by Harper? Not getting something here.

Between the dubious money source and where the gun came from - fear mongering, also imo. Paulson has much to gain by this - something he has wanted for a long time but so far can't have.

Gotta wonder about this whole affair - a dead guy can't speak. Would like to hear from the aunt - property owner. Or has she been muzzled?

  • #600
Not real clear on what you think is so dubious about the possibility of Bibeau having worked in the oilsands or where the gun came from, and how this all equates to fear mongering on behalf of LE.

If the dead guy could speak, what could he say that would allay your concerns about where his money came from or where he got the gun?
