People from all parts of the US were participating in the competition. What about the competition makes it seem small, or insignificant?
Top prize of $1500.

Read some of the Facebook comments on the site itself.

Amateur.

Unpaid.

Not a career highlight.

The value of the 1st place prize is $4200, not $1500: http://www.filmracing.com/100/prizes.htm
I'm not convinced that the prize is what matters. The winners of the competition will receive a lot of exposure, which is the actual end game ... not the prize value.

Regardless, Shannon auditioned because she wanted to participate and she saw value in it. She was chosen for the part during the audition. She was going to be working on that production from Dec 4-8. It's unrealistic to think that she took the time to audition in Edmonton for the part, but she didn't want the part, or that she was actively pursuing a successful career, and then decided throw it away by vanishing.

I'm convinced that Shannon is missing against her will, and I'm not optimistic that this will have a good ending.

ETA: Check out some of the winning films. The competition is clearly an international event.

$1500 and some software downloads does not an International Film Festival make.

This is getting off topic, but ask anyone involved in the biz. Amateur.

Google "Amateur Film Contest" and see the hundresds of other "international" contests offering bigger prizes.

Did she actually audition? Was it a favour for a friend? Was it confirmed that was her "missing" in the ad for a replacement actress?

The entire "film" had to be written and filmed in 4 days... it's not serious film work by any stretch of the imagination.

Welcome to Ws melbot1000!
Thanks for the interesting tidbit, thinking of it now, was Shannon trying to dodge some commitments by disappearing?

I was thinking the opposite! Wouldn't this be more a reason for her not to disappear? Wouldn't this be exciting for her and very unprofessional for her to bail on?

In the theatre world, there is an old saying - There are no small parts, only small actors.

If SB is/was serious about her craft and reputation, she would not simply bail on a role. That type of behaviour would surely get around to other casting directors and could seriously hurt her career. MOO.

That definitely sounds like Shannon, so that means she got the part for the Edmonton 100 hour film shoot. That fact contributes to the belief that she was happy, busy, active, had a successful career, and that there was no reason for her to voluntarily disappear.

http://www.filmracing.com/100/100hourfilmrace2014.htm

I agree and to add to this, I don't think she left to get away from any familial/relationship pressures. I get the impression from FB snooping that SB's family are an intelligent, artistic, supportive, liberal/open minded type family that I think she could tell anything to and they would be supportive of her - no matter what. JMO.

The 100 hour film shoot appears to be a small, independent contest for amateurs. It's most likely not high profile, not very profitable, and not considered a big deal on one's resume.

Chances are, most of the casts and crews are volunteers. It could also be interpreted as a step down from a successful career, and not necessarily something to be excited about, but something to potentially be depressed about.

Too hard to read anything into it either way.

I don't think it's a step down myself. Actors who truly love acting will do mostly anything and everything to add to a resume and to build character development. Look how many Hollywood heavy hitters do a low budget indie films for a 'role of a lifetime' and get nominated for Oscars after! It's par for the course in the arts, most hungry actors will eat this stuff up.

SB is in Alberta, Canada a far way from LA and Hollywood and she's still young, fairly new to acting as she said in the interview posted and probably needs to develop. You hear of big wig movie stars who still love to do summer stock theatre and off Broadway for 'gritty' roles to keep them in their element. I wonder though what Shannon thought? You could be right, depends on the type of artist/actor she is.

Perhaps next year, my high school aged child and his friends might like to enter this contest. I will mention it to him.

I agree, it's all about networking. Meeting that one person who can make or break your career, even in Canada.

LOL! Nah, they only need to upload the perfect YouTube video, get it to go viral and bam! Instant celebrity. No need to put in the work these days.

Maybe Shannon thought she met such a person in Toronto or Vancouver...

In respects to the 100 hour film thing, maybe she had some inspirational motive. On her Google+ account, she posts her new mantra is to think less, be more. She likes Aldous Huxley books on her FB, maybe she was philosophical about the acting thing and wanted to do what she could to help others or socially.

Yes, could be...if she was networking a lot, there are some unsavory types in the film biz as someone else noted upthread.

My point exactly. She has credits... which means speaking parts in actual professionally made roles.

If you are a Chef (professional) and go to work at McDonalds (100 hour film)... do you feel good or bad about it? Is it a great opportunity you would never miss, or a sign of desperation?

Wasn't that from an old episode of the Brady Bunch when Marsha got the football in the nose?

The only problem with the "ran off" argument, is that it doesn't make sense.
When one goes to another city, they need money and access internet and banking along with other traceable steps. If they have met someone, say the suggested sugar daddy, at least ONE friend or family member would know of said person's existence. Missing important commitments and leaving behind personal belongings and a cell? That would take a rather shallow, self-absorbed person and nothing I have read on her social media or family's pages suggest she is either.

  • #539
There is no way she voluntarily went with anyone to a different city. I doubt she was Kidnapped either. Unfortunately the end result of this will not be a surprise to anyone who has been reading this forum.

I doubt Dwayne Dibbly, up and coming "film maker" in Edmonton, has much pull in the industry. "Hey man... she bailed on my 100 hour film".

I suspect most serious industry insiders would applaud such a decision.
