Thanks for the reminders posted above.

I've been thinking about two things - the fact that some neighbours heard nothing while some heard noises. And, I've been thinking of Sonia working the night shift.

The different levels of hearing noises could be due to a number of circumstances - some people using sleeping meds while others were still awake unable to sleep. And if it was indeed very hot, some neighbours might have been outdoors in the cooler night air.

QUESTION: Do we know if Sonia was working the night shift that night? I know she was in Bolton visiting her parents earlier, but where did Sonia go after leaving Bolton?

Quoted from Kamille:
Which is why I get a bad feeling about the young men who were living around the area at the time, especially when I read the story about her mother saying that she had trouble with a group of young tenants who were actually living in the complex in one of the units.

Yes, I've been thinking of those young men as well. They moved away from the complex, so.......????????

Reading Kamille's post, I started wondering if parking was an issue between neighbours on that street , considering that SV had driven home that night, maybe after parking in the wrong spot or vice versa- perhaps a doorway confrontation - turned into something more brutal.

The altercations she had with these young men involved noise I believe from what her mother said. She was working nights when she worked at the hospital and I suppose they would be loud and rowdy and she'd call police on them for a noise complaint because she needed to sleep during the day? Most likely she'd have tried to speak with them first but...well you know how some young people can be about respecting neighbour's rights. So there was probably an ongoing issue between her and them.

At the time of her death however, she was no longer working as a nurse at a hospital so she was no longer working the night shifts. She was working a regular Monday to Friday job in a lab I believe.

Was there an altercation with them that weekend I wonder? :waitasec:

Neighbours indicated that she usually parked in her garage and the garage was found open when LE arrived so unless someone was blocking her driveway, I don't think that parking would have been an issue. She was likely parked in her garage that night and the perp used her keys to open the garage and take her car.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the spate of violence against women, but here it is:

Student Reports Sexual Assault
12-Sep-2011 16:39 PST Back | Print Article

http://www.durhamregion.com/news/cr...---------------------------------------------

A 16-year-old female student in Whitby reported being attacked and sexually assaulted during her lunch break.

On Monday, September 12, 2011 around 11:30 a.m., the 16-year-old female student from Sinclair High School was eating her lunch alone in a grassy area near a park in the vicinity of Lazio Street and Samandria Avenue in Whitby. She was approached by three unknown males who grabbed her and threw her to the ground.

She reports being dragged into a wooded area where two suspects held her down and one suspect grabbed the knife from her lunch bag and cut her clothing. She reported being sexually assaulted by one of the suspects and losing consciousness at one point. When she awoke, she managed to stumble out into a grassy field where a telephone technician working in the area saw her. He contacted police.

Suspect #1 and #2 are described as male, white, both in their 20s, wearing baggy clothing. Suspect #3 is described as a male, black, in his 20s, wearing baggy clothing.

Investigators with the DRPS Sexual Assault Unit are interviewing people in the area and are canvassing the neighbourhood in hopes someone saw the suspects earlier.

Anyone with new information regarding this investigation is requested to contact Det. Anderson of the SAU at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5324.

Wow...but thank goodness? At least we don't have to consider violent young sexual offenders are travelling around in groups in the middle of the day.

This young lady has a lot of 'splaining to do. :waitasec:

Please watch this video again. It shows the house and the neighbour with the window open that night. I think the neighbour is from a few houses down and not directly next door, based on what I can see (I need help with this part). I wonder if her place is where some young guys where being too loud and the place where Sonia was complaining about?

Watched it again - it's difficult to say but the woman is kind of leaning against a doorframe. I thought that doorframe was directly adjacent to/joining with Sonia's porch/front door.

If memory serves, the media said that three young males were renting a house a few doors down from Sonia and Sonia had to call in noise complaints in order to fall asleep when the young guys were partying late.

For what it's worth - I tend to believe this female witness/neighbour.:twocents:

I suspected this all along - the tip off for me was the young woman said the men "used a knife she had in her lunch bag" to cut away her blouse. Well, no student would have a knife that strong in a lunch bag.

It's a shame that it's come to this sort of behaviour in order to get attention.:innocent:

Yes it does appear that she had a lot of "next door" neighbours LOL. Here's an article naming two more...

Residents of the tidy townhouse unit where she lived were skittish about talking about her disappearance, however two women who were immediate neighbours said they will now be locking their doors.

“It has generally been a nice place to live,” said next door neighbour Cindy Downey. “Up to now, I haven’t had a worry.”

“Now I’ll definitely be locking my doors at night,” she said.

Another neighbour, who identified herself only as Stephanie, said Varaschin was a quiet neighbour who didn’t cause any disturbance.

“She seemed pretty nice,” Stephanie said, “She was totally fine.”

The townhouse complex where she lives is geared toward young families, with a tiny children’s park just a few steps from the missing woman’s home.

Brandon Lundy, 20, a tenant in Varaschin’s building, said he doesn’t feel as safe as before and never expected something like this to happen in his neighborhood.

“All that stuff happens in Toronto,” said Lundy.

As the investigation progresses, local residents are watching in disbelief.

You're welcome! Now I wonder if this homicide is connected with the person who jumped off the Mavis Road overpass onto the 401 highway this morning!

Many apologies for posting so many in a row!:ohdear:

The neighbour in the video is shown on her front porch and there is police tape nearby and I think it's attached to her porch. I still don't think she's the adjacent next door neighbour though.

While Peel Regional Police are trying to determine if there's a connection between this afternoon's discovery of a dead body near Mavis Rd. and Hwy. 401 and an incident in which a male teenager jumped off an overpass onto the busy expressway, friends of the pair say they are directly related.
A short time after responding to Mavis Rd. and Hwy. 401, where the teen, identified as being 17-years-old, suffered life-threatening injuries after jumping from the bridge, police found a young woman's body in a park near Spinnaker Circle, in the area of Mavis Rd. and Courtneypark Dr. W.
Both are believed to be students at Mississauga Secondary School. Friends say the two were inseparable.

Does anyone think that there might be more than one person involved in Sonia's murder? I was thinking about her car and when it was discovered, both front doors were open. Why leave them open? Maybe to avoid making noise at that time of the morning. IDK.

  • #618
Still not sure if it's ever been confirmed that the car was found with both doors open. :waitasec:

Does anyone know if her keys were inside when it was found?

I've always thought that Sonia's murder was the work of one person. I know it's a lot for one person to pull off in one night, but one person seems to fit.

And I still think that one person is responsible for the attack on SL and the killing of AG.

Just my gut feeling on the subject......:twocents:

Just a followup to this tragic story...
"The suspect was struck by at least one car and remains in hospital with serious injuries. He has not yet been formally charged. Schoolmates on scene Friday described Nijjar and the suspect as close friends but said that the boy had issues with depression. Some also said it may have been a case of the suspect wanting a relationship with Nijjar -- a feeling friends said was not reciprocated.

"It was an ongoing thing," said Alex Marinez, who said Nijjar had been stabbed. "She didn't want to (have a romantic relationship) with him, and he had some depression issues."

Marinez and other schoolmates also said the suspect had been writing about suicide on his Facebook page for the week leading up to Friday's double tragedy, and went as far as hinting he would take Nijjar's life along with his own.
