Happy and full of life. I just hope their families and friends can in time, deal with the overwhelming grief they must be feeling. Thanks for sharing the myspace link.

Maybe I'm wrong or desensitized from being here too long, but that didn't seem any more graphic to me than lots of other stuff we show or talk about at WS.

Honestly, the interviews with the girls in the other car, looking at their photos and myspace pages, and the video from the funerals was much more upsetting.

I agree... I didn't find the video graphic at all...
Sad of course, but nothing too graphic.

Talking on your cellphone while driving is definitely illegal in NY state...
I live in NY and use an ear piece if I am on a cell phone when driving; however, I think that it is still distracting to do so.

It's hard to believe that FIVE young people were in there and died. There's nothing left of the front, it's unrecognizable as the vehicle it had been moments before. But I guess you're right, it's the images in my mind that are more graphic than the actual footage. :( I've had the unfortunate experience of being on a couple accident scenes, this one is really bad, perhaps the worst. Amazing that the truck driver survived without injury, there's nothing left of his cab either. And incredible that the vehicle wasn't pushed into the red van that the girls had just passed or anyone else. It seems right after the moment of impact the truck driver was steering to the right off the road to get the wreck away from other's. The girls vehicle must have erupted in fire first.

I too am amazed that the van didn't hit them or wasn't involved in the wreck as well. The van, along with the other carload of girls, must have had great breaks to not have been piled up with the other SUV and car. Just the shock of watching something like that happen would make it hard for me to get out of the way of something like that.

Errr, I mean talking by holding the phone up to your ear. Headsets are perfectly legal.

I knew what you meant, my dear. :) I still think that it is distracting to be talking--even when using a headset--while you are trying to drive. ;)

Well, so is smoking in your car, eating, or anything else that involves extra thinking or taking your hands off of the steering wheel.

I saw this couple at Wegmans (super market) with their 2 kids...haha, they were both wearing identical bluetooth headsets. I just shook my head.

There graduation pics especially make me cry because at that moment there so happy, ready for college life and then getting good jobs and having the perfect family....while they have no idea that within a week they would be gone. :(

Hey, there's a Wegman's in my neck of the woods, too! I just love that store. :)

I feel so bad for these kids and their families. My husband used to go to Myrtle Beach with all of his friends during summer vacation. He said that they were all excited, joking, playing around in the car. I just wish that this girls hadn't felt the need to pass another vehicle, especially at night! Hindsight, however, is 20-20. They are all now in heaven. Prayers to their families and friends. I know that it will be a long time healing.

We're travelling from five hours away to Rochester this weekend for a soccer tournament. I guess that has been part of my interest in the situation. There is actually two different soccer tournaments there this weekend, a cheerleading camp, and a convention for Jehova's Witnesses from across the country. I hope the community can handle all that.

Here is another website made for the girls.
You can donate to the fund & buy their bracelets.
Which are absolutely adorable!!

Theres also really sweet videos of the vigil and interviews with friends.
& a video message for their parents.

Well, not to bag on these girls, but I don't see the point of this.

"some suggestions have included a memorial garden with 5 eternal flames at the new football field"

Come on now. Is this necessary? I went to Fairport High and a kid in my class died of a brain tumor, which is just as tragic. I don't recall any fund being established for this poor kid. These kids were graduated and died doing something non-school related. How about use that money to raise awareness to prevent kids driving beyond the measures of their license or texting/talking on your cellphone while driving?

I think this money is going to be misspent. Just my opinion.

Eternal flames...come on...

this is such a terrible tragedy. i feel horrible for these girls and their families. i think the media is making too big a deal of the fact that these young women were cheerleaders, though. they were women, and people need to see that. it's like saying "five ceramic club members" or "five chess players". the better termenology would be women or people.

these five young women are in my prayers. ♥

i also agree with paladin in that it isnt really fair that some people's tragedies get far more attention than others.

At the discretion of the principal? what about the families?
why can't the money just go to a worthy cause in their honor? it has to go to some public display of...
i agree. like you said - so many children die of tragedies very day. why do these kids deserve eternal flames at the high school?

they were traveling for a personal event. they were no longer students. were not victims of any crime that occured (so far as we know) just because they were students of the high school - how is this related to thie high school at all? why not help the families pay for funeral costs?

That website has some links to videos about people's reactions. People saying things like "They didn't deserve this." OF COURSE THEY DIDN'T!!! No one really deserves to die. I don't know, the site and the ideas expressed on it irritated me, so I left.

The girls died in a tragic accident. I'm very sorry. I just think this thing is starting to go overboard now.

I agree...they were special to those who loved them, but they aren't more special than any other student who has died, just b/c they were popular cheerleaders. They weren't Presidents of the USA & didn't die in service to their country...they were just young women. Their loss is felt keenly by those who loved them, but let's put it in perspective.

I think the picture of the angel looks photoshopped.

If a memorial were created for every student that died there wouldn't be much room left on school grounds.

I wonder what kind of requirements there are for memorials to be placed on school grounds, if any. I mean, they were technically alumni of the school at that point. Will a memorial be placed there for me if I die in a tragic accident?

Perhaps if I die tragically and somehow Websleuths catches wind of it, would one of you be so kind as to push that school district to erect a memorial for me? :)
