As explosive as a propane tank is (or can be) -it's not the worst thing that someone could bring to a scene like this. I couldn't believe my eyes the other day when one of the news channels showed how one of the ISIS bombs were made with common household chemicals.

Household chemicals can be dangerous, even as packaged, but esp when combined w incompatible materials,
e.g. ammonia & chlorine bleach, as well as many other combos. Read warnings on the labels!

Dear never gave any hint of any political views when he ate his meals at the only cafe (pictured) in the isolated town of Hartsel, eight miles from his remote cabin in Colorado

The news story I watched was about a lot more than simply the dangers of mixing household chemicals without reading the labels. This was more like instructions on how to make a bomb with ordinary household chemicals.

There are things far worse than propane that could have been in the container that Dear was said to have carried into the building with him. Those who went in after the hostages may not have known the full extent of what they were up against.

It reminds me of the firemen and others who ran into and up the stairs of the twin towers on 9/11 when everyone else was running out.

Does Dear himself have any military history? That *might* be more pertinent, depending on his history.

It bothers me greatly as a veteran, to see an insinuation that the father of a 57 year old man (a violent murderer), a father who most likely served this country honorably in the military, going back to WWII, could somehow contribute to an excuse, or even an "explanation" for this kind of radical violence.

It bothers me, as a veteran myself, that you would conclude that margarita25 was insinuating that Dear's father's military service was providing an excuse or explanation for his heinous crimes. Most folks that have served in the military are very familiar with weapons, strategies, tactics, etc.. It would be reasonable to conclude that a son would learn many skills such as hunting, survival, etc., from his father. I know that I did.. Just chose to use these learned skills for other than committing heinous unspeakable crimes against others. <modsnip>

I'm a veteran too (USMC.) I have to admit that my first reaction to Margarita's comment was the same as K_Z's was. It was as though conclusions were being drawn between Dear's criminal behavior and the fact that his father was prior service military.

As of now, I don't think that it was intended to be as simplistic as it might have seemed to me at the time. At least I hope not.

My father was a veteran but I am not. He never taught me any kind of hunting or survival skills.

I am much more capable in survival skills than my dad ever was.

Beautiful and mysterious at the same time. I can't imagine anyone wanting to live in that climate. It looks like a setting of the TV show "Northern Exposure."

But did he talk to them at all? Is he a chatty guy who would talk about the weather and football but leave out politics, or did he just keep to himself?

Hartsel is in an area known as South Park. It is the setting for a TV show.

His ex-wife said he was not a chatty type person.

All I am thinking about are these families that have LOST their loved ones, and the victims that are hurt.

Certainly there can be debates about this person who did these horrible acts, but there are people that died.

As I posted this about the second KNOWN victim, hmmm....What about the victims, people????

This is upsetting to our community. ALL OF IT.
The Shooter and the victims he killed and hurt.
What about the victims??

These two known victims were FATHERS and HUSBANDS.
Children don't have their father anymore.
Wives are WIDOWS.

SAD!!! JUST SAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
IMOO.

It makes my heart so heavy and it angers me beyond words as well.

In the blink of an eye, the families of the deceased will forever be changed. They will never, ever be the same. All of those folks were happy and probably looking forward to coming holidays on the morning of that horrible day. Those same folks had to climb into their beds that night wondering how they were going to keep going.

And the people we lost -- who knows what good works they might have done the very next day. Or the next.

Planned Parenthood shooting suspect Robert Dear appeared to solicit sex, rant about apocalypse online
BY JASON SILVERSTEIN NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Sunday, November 29, 2015, 11:35 AM

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/robert-dear-solicit-sex-rant-bible-online-article-1.2449509
“The loner accused of the Friday rampage at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic appeared to have lived a manic second life online — he wrote apocalyptic ramblings, begged for pot-smoking companions and posted an ad for “discreet” sadomasochistic sex.

A username apparently connected to Robert Lewis Dear, who is accused of fatally shooting three people, may shed light on the dark side of a man who was a mystery to many until he allegedly opened fire in the Colorado Springs clinic.

The user posted a series of paranoid, Biblical rants on the message boards for Cannabis.com nearly a decade ago.”

Much more ...

Interesting...

Where in the heck was he watching videos ? Library, perhaps ?
His ... living 'facilities' did not appear to have internet access.
So, he fixated on one component that made him enraged.
Almost like he was looking for an excuse to go on a rampage.
In my opinion.
As for myself --Not being one to believe every video that comes out without verification ; I am not going to say these videos are truthful and exact.
Will try not to examine more theories about these video clips as I didn't want to get too off-track.
:moo:

Based on pix & other info, agreeing he did not appear to live the high life. It may not have been as primitive or poverty stricken as some comments seem conclude. IDK. {ETA: DailyMail article described his structure as a "cabin," while imo, looks like RV-travel trailer w some kind of rustic DIY non-mobile addition. Living off the grid is mos' def' not for everyone.}

Watching vids? Maybe on a smartphone? From pix I could not see phone line, if there, connected to his RV in Hartsel, but saw something that looked like a sat. dish or cable dish. Poss that he has/had internet access, just like many fulltime RV'ers (altho, admittedly, pix of his NoCarolina prop & Hartsel prop suggest he did not travel like many full-timers do).

Beside his Hartsel RV was wood, apparently stockpiled to heat the rig, eliminating a major need for elec.
Higher res pix might show other sources of elec for non-heat functions, e.g. solar panels or gasoline, diesel, or LP-powered generator. Just a few alternatives and not cheap to come by.
Below: Hartsel road sign on US Hwy 24. And maybe most or all of Hartsel, pop. ~600+, per 2000 census.
Something to be said for living w a view of those mountains. JM2cts.

The same thing happened in last month's shooting rampage in Co Springs. The shooter's first victim, the one who was on his bicycle and whose last words were "Don't Shoot Me", was also an Iraq War veteran iirc.

Yes, this is true.
We have a lot of Iraq War Vets here in Colorado Springs, due to several military installations in our area, with
Active Duty status, and vets that have been discharged, as well.

IMOO.
