Dad didn't give a scent item..some us find that strange due to the fact that dad says there was discarded clothes and bed linens made on a couch that Dylan slept on..

Fact is the mom had to have clothes delivered from CCity and LE acknowledged such and said that they would be of great help in now having a scent article..

And yep many question what was being sniffed prior to those clothes arriving from mom since dad had no articles(tho, he now says there were)..

Yes gives me a big ol headache, too!

Do you remember where you saw this?

Lake Nighthorse is new (man-made) and doesn't seem to be showing up on many maps yet.

Thank you!!

Do you know which area Lake Nighthorse is located (in relation to the others)?

I wondered why I couldn't get anything to show - I keep getting an engineering company in Durango instead of Lake Nighthorse....:banghead:

I've been following this case since the first day, and when it was reported that mom had to have clothing brought to her from Colorado Springs the weekend after Dylan went missing, I couldn't determine who that info had come from. I never saw anything indicating that the police had said it, and I'll note that when the clothing arrived, the police said they didn't need it. Strange.

Around that time, reading the Find Dylan Facebook page, and the pages of relatives, friends, community members, it seemed that the citizen search team wanted the clothing for dogs they were trying to bring in, versus LE wanting scent articles for their own dogs.

Anyway, I haven't seen anything to clarify who wanted the clothing Mom sent for. So... maybe dad gave clothing left at his home to LE to use with their dogs.

Nope, LE said the clothes would be of great help when using those particular dogs that trail a persons scent..at the time the articles of clothes arrived they happened to be using cadaver dogs of which scent articles would clearly be of no use.

Can you please provide a link for that statement? I do not remember seeing this in MSM?

TIA and welcome!

Sure. And hopefully I do this right lol.

Bender indicates no pressing need for the clothes, or that he had requested them. The whole scent article/clothing thing confuses me greatly.

From the Durango Herald:

“We have the clothes,” Bender said Monday. “We don’t need them here (at the reservoir), but can use them later.”

I just went back to reread what Sgt Bender said about the scented clothing:

“Absent any clues, we owe it to Dylan to consider all possibilities,” Bender said. “We will continue to do so.”

None of Dylan’s belongings that could carry his scent was available in the first days of the investigation. But the family had articles of the boy’s clothing delivered on the weekend.

“We have the clothes,” Bender said Monday. “We don’t need them here (at the reservoir), but can use them later.”

“It’s no comfort that they didn’t find anything in the water today,” she said Monday. “But just looking for your little boy in a lake is horrific.”

Bender said no search is planned for today, but searches will resume if new clues or leads develop.

So imo, the sergeant verifies that there were NO scent clothing articles available the first several days of the search.

He said they did have a use for them later, but they didnt need them at the lake. I think that was a nice way of saying the dogs at the lake were cadaver dogs, who don't use Dylan's specific scent trail.

Bender had no pressing need for the clothing at the lake because they were using cadaver dogs, which are trained to smell for human decomposition, but not any specific human, like Dylan himself. So they do not use soiled clothing in their searches.

Hmmmm well I never saw where LE said the clothing would be of great help - only that they didn't need them at that time, but could use them later. It stood out to me because mom had gone to such trouble to get them.

If Dylan did wear the same clothes he arrived in, in the morning, then the other clothes at his dad's were probably just washed.

[ i think he meant he could use them in later searches with dogs who use a scent trail as opposed to cadaver dogs.]

Right. I understand about the HRD vs tracking dogs. His saying they didn't need them then, but could use them later indicates (to me) he had no use at all for them at that time, and that's what confused me after mom went to such trouble to get them. I just think she probably wanted them for the community search team, and it was misconstrued by reporters as LE needing them.

Of course, I have no idea. Just thought I'd try jumping into the discussion. Hard, being new, to know when to jump in. Sorry.

Thanks.

That article is written when they were searching the lake with the cadaver dogs. Therefore, not using Search & Rescue dogs.

The line before your quote is also helpful...quoted below...

None of Dylan’s belongings that could carry his scent was available in the first days of the investigation. But the family had articles of the boy’s clothing delivered

And we need to remember that dad said that stuff about the fishing pole and something about he didn't know why they weren't searching the lake sooner...or something

And this was all before LE said Dylan did not run away..

I don't think this means they had no clothes.

Looking at this site: http://www.jimmyryce.org/ScentCollection.html there are actually a lot of rules about how clothing for missing persons must be handled. Even though Bloodhounds can pick up the scent of one person among a lot of different scents once they are on the trail, that doesn't apply when giving them clothing the first time:
What should the officer first responding to a missing child call do to secure scent evidence?

(1) Lock up, tape off, or otherwise secure the child’s bedroom and closet which contains articles with the child’s scent on them. This also secures DNA, fingerprints, and other evidence which may be helpful in locating or identifying the child. The child’s computer may help detectives discover who the child went to meet. .

(2) Make sure no one handles the child’s stuffed animals or washes the child’s bedclothes or puts them in a hamper with the clothes of other family members. Almost any kind of clothing--shoes, hat, or coat--can be a scent article to start the bloodhound on the child’s trail.

So if MR had even touched the clothes (say to bring them to the police, or just by moving them around to see if there was a clue as to where Dylan went), they would have been contaminated and bloodhounds couldn't use them.

(Edit: and of course if the police think that he was abducted from MR's home, they may not have been able to use the clothing either.)

But his missing poster says he was wearing the Nike shirt. So.... where does that leave us? The Nike shirt is pretty distinctive. Would be good to know if he changed shirts that morning.

Salem

Since detective say he was wearing the same clothes as in the airport, Nike shirt was a mistake.

Yes, she had the clothes delivered obviously as soon as she possibly could..and when they arrived LE were AT THAT TIME using cadaver dogs..also AT THAT TIME the media asks for a statement re:the clothes..LE stated the truth..AT THAT TIME AT THE RESEVOIR THE CLOTHES COULD NOT AID IN THE SEARCH WITH CADAVER DOGS...but that the clothes would be of help when they were searching with scent trailing dogs..

I'm simply clearing up that IMO there is nothing strange that AT THAT TIME cadaver dogs were being used and LE simply stated THAT AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME WHEN A REPORTER ASKED THEM ..the clothes could not be used..

I'm off the circular moving train now.

More on scenting:

(1) Secure and separately bag more than one piece of material containing the missing child’s scent, in case one scent item gets contaminated or contains, for whatever reason, someone else’s scent. This can happen if the family’s dirty clothes are mixed together or another child slips into the bed of the missing child or tries on the child’s hat. Shoes are likely to be less contaminated than other articles.

FYI one reason these rules have to be followed is that if they aren't followed, it could hurt any potential criminal case. Read the link I posted above, it's full of detail from an organization that appears to do some great work using bloodhounds in missing children's cases.

Mother brought some clothing in. It says right prior to the sentence you quoted about family delivering the clothing, and mother already said she brought clothing in.
