I've wondered the same thing...dogs just sniffing around in circles??

But to me the bigger question is - with the clothes brought in, did the dogs pick up Dylan's scent AT ALL at his dad's and where did they go???

I remember reading very early that a dog or dogs at the house had followed a scent to the end of the driveway, but they didn't know if it was his scent or not. I believe it said that it was tracking human scent (not human remains scent). I've been trying to find where I read it for about a week now, but haven't had much luck. I'll keep looking for a link, but for now I'll just say MOO.

Well then the reporter lied and made up and reported false information. Why would they do that on Channel 7? And why would Dylans mom say that if it wasnt true? And why would she have someone travel 12 hours there and back to retrieve those scent items if they werent necessary.

THE REPORTER, in a mainstream news article SAID EXPLICITLY there were NO SCENT ITEMS AVAILABLE in the first days of the case.

Why are we discounting this professional news reporter when the quote from the detective clearly confirms the statement?

TBH I don't know if a distinction should be made between what was reported and what was directly quoted. I was just trying to understand Ransom's point, which requires some reading between the lines. I personally don't believe that anyone was lying, because I can think of scenarios where more scent items would be needed, especially if Dylan hadn't changed clothes.
IMO

Reporters paraphrase. They misunderstand, misinterpret and some of them downright expand on things just to get the readers commenting. He/she could have heard the mom talking or one of the LEO's talking. But they are not always accurate and you cannot depend on them for facts. Even when they're supposed to be quoting someone, it's not always word for word, because I've compared articles with quotes to the actual video and they make mistakes!

I don't know (for sure) that tracking/trailing dogs were brought to dad's house after ER brought more clothes from C. Springs. Need to go look for that. Geesh, I was trying to go to bed. lol

Exactly and to imply or "quote" a LEO with a certainty and it's really just a reporter is just absurd, IMO. We all mishear ... look at the different interpretations from watching the same live stream. We all (sort of) hear what we want. But implying is not the same as a quote souce. JMO.

Ok, I found the article about clothing on couch Monday when Dad returned home.

Snipped by me:

The next morning, Dylan was sleeping on the couch where Mark Redwine now sits and where Dylan's blankets still lie jumbled. Mark said he waited until 7:30 a.m. but still couldn't rouse his son, so he told him he would return about 11. When he got back at 11:30, his son's dirty cereal bowl was beside the sink. The television was on Nickelodeon. His son's fishing pole was gone. So was his black-and-gray backpack. A few articles of clothing were left behind on the couch.

Regarding the clothes unavailable for the scent dogs from MR early on. I'm trying to find the article, but IIRC, MR stated DR left shirt or clothes and blanket on sofa when he allegedly left on Monday morning while Dad was running errands. If these items were laying on the couch (Dad's couch), perhaps just that alone made them unusable for scent. It's also possible Dad had a piece or two of his own clothing slung across the same couch. I don't see it as a red flag or that Dad didn't want to provide a piece of DR's clothing for scent. It could just simply be that they were not acceptable for scent purposes because of "cross contamination" (my words here). MOO

I'll still try to find the article.

I would think that if someone had been wearing clothing for several hours, that just laying that clothing across a couch would not cancel the scent of the missing person. The strongest scent would dominate, IMO. I'm not an expert, but although they request something that only the missing person has worn, I think they will accept something that might possibly have been just touched by another person, if it is something that has not been through the washer.
For instance, if Mom sent her b/f to get some of Dylan's clothes from her house, then the b/f would have had to handle them to get them there. So his scent wouldn't cancel out Dylan's scent. I highly doubt they would refuse to use a shirt Dylan had worn, just because it had been laid on Dad's couch.

Again. I never said anyone was lying or even implied that.

Okay, I won't wait that long! I tried to write this with as much fact and as little opinion as possible. It's hard for me to focus when I read a jumbled mix of ideas, etc. (not any person's posts, just the beliefs jumping from post to post because different posters have different ideas.) I usually try to make up a basic outline for every case I follow, but it's been too hard keeping up on this one! I decided to use my “vacation” to try to get one done, and maybe I'll be able to think clearly enough to eventually come up with something useful.

What We Know - Things That have Been Verified

1. Dylan boarded a plane at some point on Sunday afternoon in Colorado Springs.
2. The plane arrived an hour late in Durango at approximately 6:00pm on Sunday
3. Dylan sent a text to his mother at 7:06 pm Sunday saying he had arrived and his father had picked him up
4. After leaving the airport, Dylan and his father went to Walmart for groceries and McDonald's for 'food'
5. Dylan sent a text to a friend saying he would be going there on Monday morning instead of Sunday night
6. All cell phone activity stopped at about 8:00 pm Sunday
7. Dylan's ipod and some of his clothes were inside his father's home sometime after Sunday
8. MR had appointments in Durango Monday morning, and he did keep them
9. When MR returned home at approximately 11:30 am on Monday, Dylan was no longer there.
10. Dylan's friends say they never saw or heard from him on Monday
11. ER says she never heard from him on Monday

Did I miss anything here?

7. Dylan's ipod

It has not been confirmed who's iPod it was; could be MR or someone else's

I agree with everything else in this section. Now on to your next section …

Don't feel you have to go find it. It just boggles my mind that IF tracking dogs were used near the house, WHY wouldn't LE or MSM report their findings....I find it sooooo unusual.

This whole case reporting, LE press releases only makes me scratch my head:waitasec::waitasec:

Would it be to much to ask for a press conference; guess so...

I remember that same article or a similar article. I have been looking for it , because in the article it said that they found ' a trail' near dad's driveway, but they didnt have any scent items to use to compare it. I saw it clearly but cannot find it now.

ETA: TXlady2 stated what I was thinking, just much more eloquently.

You're probably right. I remember reading recently that his ipod and some of his clothes had been found there, but it probably wasn't LE who said it - they're pretty tight with their information. Thanks

If the clothes were washed they wouldn't be good for tracking dogs.
They might have used tracking dogs, but clearly dogs didn't find Dylan.
So I am not sure what scent they were tracking.

I agree- if the clothes were washed, they would be completely useless for tracking.

Which begs the question: were the clothes on the sofa Dylan's clothes? If so, had Dylan worn them between the time he left Colorado Springs on Sunday November 18th & the time he arrived & was picked up by dad at the airport in Durango? If Dylan had worn them during this time period, had they been washed before he was reported missing on Monday November 19th? Or - were they freshly laundered clothes from his backpack that had not been worn since laundering, but were (for whatever reason) left on the sofa?

Sofas are full of skin cells from a variety of people if several people have sat on that sofa. If an article of clothing (freshly laundered or worn) had come into contact with sofa cushions that may contain skin cells from other people, I think it's possible that the scent may be contaminated and the scent article may not be useful for the purpose of tracking the missing person.

All I know is that the bloodhounds were taken out on the 19th & the 20th - so they must have been exposed to a scent article (whether or not that scent article was viable is another matter).

Not sure that is the case, according to http://www.jimmyryce.org/ScentCollection.html

What should the crime scene specialist do to insure scent is properly collected and preserved?

(1) Secure and separately bag more than one piece of material containing the missing child’s scent, in case one scent item gets contaminated or contains, for whatever reason, someone else’s scent. This can happen if the family’s dirty clothes are mixed together or another child slips into the bed of the missing child or tries on the child’s hat.

All I know is that we can't figure it out. LE is going to have to do that job and then let us know what they have decided.
I just want to find out what happened to Dylan because I don't think its good. And its frustrating all of us trying to sort it out with the little bit we have.

  • #899
I just re-read this article.from the 3rd..its a good one and answers alot of questions IMO. I thought I might post it again for anyone who missed it.

http://durangoherald.com/article/20121203/NEWS01/121209881/Police-reveal-no-new-leads--

Residents have freely discussed the many possibilities that could explain Dylan’s disappearance
“This is a wilderness area,” Healy said. “Even an animal in the forest could be involved, because we have a lot of those up here.”

They have had a protracted divorce with court proceedings occurring in almost monthly since 2005.

Mark Redwine filed a restraining order against his son, Cory, and Elaine Redwine in July 2008. Elaine Redwine filed a restraining order against her ex-husband on the same date. Dylan was listed as a protected person in both orders. Both of the orders were dismissed in December 2008.

<modsnip>.... The clothing has been discussed in ominous detail, as the fishing pole...
I'm sorry I've been reading and following as closely as the rest of you, and I have my own opinions etc... I think we all get emotional over children missing because they are kids, they can't fend for themselves as well as us as adults do. <modsnip> I really really really hope the LE knows more than they are letting on... I also hoped that it wasn't jessica in that ditch and Elizabeth and lyric were still alive. But I won't give up hope for Dylan. Where are you buddy? Your family needs you!!!!!
