Most WIFI connections are password protected. You would have to have that particular accounts password to access it.

WIFI connections SHOULD BE password protected but most people don't even know how to do it. Mine is, but if you search around your neighborhood (or anywhere) you can usually find many unprotected connections.

I can send an "electronic communication" using my kindle 3g. The device does not require wifi to send or receive information. it uses 3g signals similar to cell phones.

Yes it was a text that was SENT not received. I do not believe it was sent from Dylan's phone.

Also MR had a laptop so I would assume he had wifi.

What if it was a text sent by Dads phone to a friend of Dylans and said person was pretending to be Dylan.

Hey this is Dyl im charging my phone using Dads ill be there in the am.

It would be on Dads cell phone info not moms!

That's true. but they are not very smart. And anything you would post using that connection would not be private.

If a friend surely he would have spoken up by now. Course I guess he could have and LE has not released information. jmo

Wow I just got a kindle and didnt know that.

Wouldn't Dylan's mom and brother know if he had an iTouch? They aren't cheap.

@Schmae - great point about the texting the R did in the morning! If LE is saying that the last electronic communication was 9:37 pm on Sunday, then it would NOT have been incoming text messages as we know that R had send some on Monday.
That means we are down to another electronic devise and/or outgoing text or activity.

As far as the time stamp, this is what I have had happen to me:
The other day I received a notice that I had voice mail, it was from a friend so I called her back, she said that she had left the message the night before. I didn't get the little notification until the next day and that was the time stamp.

I just went online to my provider website. I received a text from my daughter, on my phone it shows the time as 12:50 pm (and that was when I received it), on the website it shows as 11:50 am.
I checked the phone calls and all of them were the correct time.
I NEVER noticed that their is a notice at the bottom "call usage corresponds with the time zone you are in when beginning a call"
For the texting is said "corresponds to Pacific Time"

(I'd hope the LE noticed that little disclaimer too if it was ER's records)

As far as needing wifi, I use to have a t-mobile stick for my pc, anywhere there was cell service I had wifi and many ipads come with wifi.

I've had several laptops over the years without wifi. In fact, right now, I have 4 working desk tops, 2 partially built desk tops, and 3 partially built lap tops with no wifi. I just use a LAN I set up here, and don't have to worry about neighbors hacking into a wireless account and slowing things down. In spite of that, I'd be surprised if MR doesn't have wifi; in that area, it would make the most sense. MOO

you would need a kindle 3g to send/receive communication without a wifi signal. There are a few different types of kindles.

In previous posts there were questions about the night Dylan arrived - where they went, what they did, if they "tossed a football", what time they went to bed, things like that.

Re-reading the NG transcript 11/28, I noted that Denise told NG about her conversation with MR about the night DR arrived, etc.

To refresh memories...

GRACE: And what if anything did the father have planned to do with the little boy during the vacation?

HESS: I don`t know of anything specific. I know when I had spoke with the father at one point he said that they had gone shopping after they got off the -- after he picked up Dylan at the airport they had gone shopping for groceries and had talked about what they wanted to do for Thanksgiving.

I do know that Dylan had planned to spend time with friends and that he was supposed to be his friends around 6:30 in the morning, and it was his intent to get up and his dad to drive him to meet his friends at 6:30 in the morning.

GRACE: You mean on Monday morning?

HESS: Yes.

GRACE: OK. That`s interesting. That`s a new fact I didn`t know. I wonder what happened to that plan because the dad left at 7:30 without Dylan.

HESS: The dad said that Dylan had been up fairly late, the evening before he flew -- the night before he flew in to Durango. And he was really tired they had gone to bed. And that he had gotten up in the morning, stirred around the house, made some noise trying to get Dylan up, and Dylan didn`t want to get up and go into town at that time.

This description that MR gave to his friend is one of the first things that I thought was hinky. He absolutely made it appear as though he never woke up his son, never communicated with him that morning, just made some noise and left at 7:30.

Then later when interviewed, he 'embellishes' the story, with the 'gentle nudge awake' and the 'understanding conversation' between them.

And the same thing with him saying that D went right to sleep. First he said D was so tired that he went right to sleep. I can believe that. But then why say they played nerf ball?

And if D sent a text at quarter to ten, then he didn't really go right to sleep.

And in this version of the story, they spent their time discussing what to do for Thanksgiving. But in his later interview, they had no plans set at all. They had a couple of hours to discuss things that night. Seems odd that the one thing they were discussing never got sussed out. JMO

Correct me if I am wrong but the only advantage to having WIFI is you don't have to be plugged into satellite hardware. With WIFI you can work without the cable. jmo

Could a broadband card plugged into a laptop provide a wifi connection sufficient for an ipod?

What about using a phone (did MR have a non-flip phone) to create a hot spot?

Just wanted to add that these days you can get a little usb plugin from verizon that turns your computer into a wifi hotspot...or, you can have your smartphone turned into a wifi hotspot. Therefore, theoretically, if someone took Dylan's phone or it quit working, he could have sent a text from a laptop from anywhere where he could get a cell phone signal.

Verizon isn't the only carrier that offers this technology either.

I wish we had more info. I am just reading and re-reading everything, and my brain is turning to mush.

If Dylan sent this later message, it is even stranger IMO that he did not make contact with R in the morning when his plans changed and R had texted him.

A nice offer on the official, page for ER to be treated to a spa day.

I used a wireless router for my network for a few months just to avoid tripping over cables, but ended up giving it to my son. It was a pain if I worked on someone else's computer (who didn't have a wireless card or adapter), and when building one for someone else, I'd have to install the wireless connection and use my password, etc., and then uninstall it before letting them take it. Now I just keep one station open for "other" computers, and plug them in there when I need to download updates or anything. For most people it probably is easier to just use the wifi/wireless. MOO

I am so intrigued by who Dylan texted because if things went south with Dad then he would surely call Mum or Cory IMO . Yet this has never been mentioned by them . And there time line on the official Facebook said Dylan's last communication was just after 8pm .

It is a total bamboozler !!
