Snip quote from Bender:

“If anyone feels they may have seen something unusual in Vallecito before or soon after Dylan was reported missing, we encourage them, including the man looking for rentals that day, to contact the Sheriff’s Office," Dan Bender, La Plata County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer said.

“They may not feel what they saw has any connection to Dylan’s disappearance. But we would like to hear from them and let Law Enforcement decide if it might be important.” Bender said.

Then why was he asking about where he could get gas? Any word on where exactly this was?

I don't know about the gas thing, and I believe it was near MR's home.

The man, who is not considered a suspect, was reportedly in the area looking for rental properties, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

“(He) is not a person of interest or anything like that,” Bender said. “It’s just a person who was in the area that we haven’t talked to.”

The man is described as Hispanic, between 45 and 50 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds, with dark hair.

Investigators interviewed someone last weekend who remembered seeing the man at the north end of Vallecito on the same day Dylan was reported missing.

The tipster, who investigators declined to identify, said the man asked where he could find gasoline for his vehicle. The tipster did not have a description of the vehicle.

From TxLady2:

This is funny! You sure know how to throw a curveball!!

Ok... I don't lie. If someone I am close to asks me something like that, I would probably say, "no, I don't like it, but if you do, that's all that matters."
If I have to I will just smile and say, "do you really want my opinion?" I don't lie to assuage someone's feelings, because in a way that's kind of cruel. I could say "oh, yes, you look marvelous!" And then she's going to go around thinking she does look great and everybody else is laughing at her! Then she will come back and be mad at me because I didn't tell her the truth, and caused her to be laughed at and she ends up not speaking to me for weeks. See? Lies don't pay!

BUT... I believe that kind of lie is a whole lot different than what everybody is talking about Mark doing. That is not even in the same ballpark, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know for certain that he has lied about anything, or made up anything. If he came out now and said he had been lying all along, I would be very surprised, it's just my impression of what I saw. Other people see it differently. Who knows which ones of us will end up being right or wrong?

True story: I worked at a department store as a "floater" filling in on breaks and absences. I was a jack of all trades, master of none. I was in women's dresses one day and this woman came out of the dressing rooms with a dress she had been trying on. It looked terrible on her. She asked me how it looked on her. I was 19 years old, it was my first job, and I'm not a liar.

So I told her it didn't look good on her. I went to the rack and found three more dresses for her to try on, that I thought would look better. All three looked better. She picked the one out of those three that she liked the best and she bought it. I made a sale. I was a happy camper, feeling all great about doing right by the customer.

After she left the department, the regular there admonished me for telling her the first one didn't look good on her. She told me we NEVER tell a customer that. I told her that I told her the truth, the dress looked awful and even if I had told her it looked great, she was going to get home, put it on and either she will decide or someone else was going to tell her it didn't look good on her. And if that happened, she would never come to this store again and trust what a sale person told her. So we would have lost a customer, and I felt with her leaving happy and knowing she can trust a sales person to tell her the truth, she'd be back again and again.

It didn't fly with the regular. She told me never to do it again. (Of course, I still did, but I didn't get requested for that department too much after that.)

Wow just checked FMDR. Thought for sure the potential witness info would have been plastered all over it. Nada.

And how much you want to bet...when it is finally posted...they will only be speculating that this is the person that possibly hid Dylan for Mark? But I don't like that there's not one post by admin, not one comment by a user about this person on the page.

Great thought!! It will pan-out to mean something hopefully or will be added to the those they have checked-off list.

The wording differs a bit between this and KKTV. I'm gonna have to wait for my email press release.

They did say the interview was a direct result of information left on the tip line.

I think that is really odd too.

So a new lead after 7 weeks . Someone came forward all this time later and just now remembered? While it's exciting, I hope their memory of the actual date and the way this guy looks is still accurate. I'm concerned about a memory of so long later and if they're so sure of the date, why didn't they come forward sooner. Bizarro!

I agree. Although I think it's obvious which way I've been leaning I still think all leads and all possibilities need to be looked into without bias.

Yep, and this could break. this. case.!!

Something is very very wrong here. Very wrong. Back to sitting on my hands. I might have to put myself in a straight jacket before the day's over.

we don't know when the tip was left, etc etc

It sort of reminds me of how they released the car info in the Sierra LaMar case after a long lull in the case.

Glad to see that tips still continue to come in nevertheless

Interesting that the press release on the Sheriff's FB page does not seem to indicate the person reporting the man now being sought as a possible witness was a "tipsters"

their FB page seems to indicate they were interviewing someone. I usually think of interview meaning the same thing as question when the term is used by LE. So I take the FB press release to mean they were questioning someone (who they will not name btw) and that person, during questioning, indicated they remembered seeing someone asking for gas.

While the news article seems to indicate the information about the gas can came from someone who contacted LE specifically to relay that info.

Very very different impressions from the two sites telling ostensibly the same story??

most likely a tip was left and then an interview was conducted :moo:

This LE has shown they don't just toss things out to the public left and right. They are asking for help from the public.

:moo:

Hopefully it is fruitful...

I took it to mean the tipster called it in then LE called him in for questioning/an interview to get further info?

I hope this is true, if it is, it's a great lead. Maybe he saw something.

That's the point I tried making a long time ago, that it was a holiday week, there were hunters in the area, there was a campground nearby, there were vacationers renting cabins, visitors to locals. Lots of non locals in the area during the time that Dylan went missing. There is no way that LE was able to track down each and every one of them and clear them. No way.

Remember, Philip Garrido traveled 2 1/2 HOURS to go up to Lake Tahoe from Antioch to find a child to kidnap. He was not up there for any other purpose but to find a child to take from their family. And he did. And he held her for 16 years. There ARE people like this and they DO find victims. IMO.
