I was under the impression that when you plug the phone into the charger, it can then be used.

That's the way all 3 flip phones in our family work.

(And none of us have any games on our little phones. My flip phone is about 3 years old, but the other 2 are less than a year old. Not even Tetris or Solitaire on them.)

Jumping off your post, about R moving around a lot - I find it very strange that MR went to F's house instead of to R's grandmas house. This is the way MR describes it (which again sounds really strange IMO) It's like it comes out of his mouth, and then he starts getting nervous that it did:

As I was going down to Bayfield to check with Ryan, who I found at his friend Fernando’s house, and as soon as I went to Fernan…’cos I don’t know where all of them live –- but I knew a couple of ‘em live -- enough to get pointed in the right direction. First place I went, Boom… there’s Ryan and Fernando, and first words out of their mouth, “We haven’t heard from Dylan all day.”
That’s when it hit me that something wasn’t right, and I immediately went to the Marshall’s office in Bayfield.

Yes, one of the most notable red flags I saw in MR's interview. One of the many remarkable coincidences in this case. Does reading a text show up as "activity" on the records?

Actually that was an answer to my question, wondering whether you have a working theory.

I just keep thinking that if Dylan were not able to use his cell phone (for whatever reason) that he would use the landline. If he didn't have R's number memorized, all he'd have to do is call his mom or dad to get it from them.
IMO, not having a way to communicate at all (broken phones, ipods, unavailable phone numbers) is a big leap. But again that's just my opinion.

I have a couple of theory's but I'm hesitant to talk about them because it would mean that I need to defend them from an onslaught of the majority. I don't feel like doing that right now.

I'm sure that Dylan could have called a number of people or even 911 if he thought that was what he should do. But I do think that it's possible that he decided to leave Marks house and not call his mom before doing so. MOO.

I know my son has said several times that he's missed calls because his phone was on the charger, but my sister can still use hers when she plugs it in. Mine doesn't work no matter what since it doesn't exist, so I'm assuming it just depends on the phone. MOO

NG asked Elaine if MR had a desktop or a laptop & ER said yes. Yes, to both???

So do you think it was only a desktop or a laptop?

  • #226
Did he specifically say that, or was that the reporter's words?

Where would have reporter gotten the idea that clothing was left on the couch?
That was the same article that talked about cereal bowl left and TV being on Nickelodeon.

I don't know where the reporter got the idea or if it was the reporter that stated it; hence my question.

Quite frankly I'm pretty much over this whole thing. I will be reading from afar and praying Dylan is found. :seeya:

Sure not my field of expertise :waitasec:
But here it says that all it takes to locate (ping) a cell phone is for it to be turned on, so if MR was reading texts the phone was obviously turned on.
That's why I was wondering if it was true that there was absolutely NO ACTIVITY since the night before. Not just whether Dylan had communicated, but that the actual cell phone was unable to function, or never turned back on.

Cell phone companies can approximate your cell phone location by "pinging" it. When cell phones are turned on, they emit a signal. Cell phone companies can "ping" or contact the cell phone and discover the nearest tower the signal is coming from. Police and law enforcement use this method regularly to track down missing persons. It's illegal to access phone records for a cell phone you don't own, but you can ask your carrier to help you ping your own number.

Tempers seem short. I'll toss us a softball to wind up the night. Does anyone think the K-9 team will be useful? Will they:

A) Find Dylan's body?
B) pick up a trace of his scent somewhere near MR's?
C) Find something/someone else out there?
D) Be completely inconclusive?

I'd like to think between the dog search and the huge audience that Dr Phil will garner (positive or negative, it is huge media exposure)....I really hope something gives in this case. Dylan has been gone too long. Thoughts?

I think that your asking if a cellphone will ping when it's turned on. The answer is yes and LE can get those records to see which cell phone tower the phone "pinged" with if it's within range.

It's different from a account owner like Elaine checking on activity whether it's voice or text or internet.

I think the dogs have a better chance of being useful than Dr. Phil.

I do too...I don't have a lot of faith in Dr Phil being able to elicit any more info from MR.

On the dog search, I'm hoping that ER told the K-9 Forensics people of some of MR's favorite fishing or outdoorsy spots from the past nearer to where they used to live in Durango.

If the purpose of the Dr. Phil show is only to elicit information from MR, then I suggest he does not participate.

And why would that be?

So do you think it was only a desktop or a laptop?

LOL I have no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a desktop maybe in the garage & he has a laptop. I wouldn't think he would have the need to use both though. Where he is living back 'n forth it makes common sense he has a laptop IMO. So if he has a laptop & we know he is a textor, living in an area with spotty reception again it would make sense he would have wifi, we know he has cable because someone identified the box & he had the NIC channel. Why wouldn't he have wifi, I think is the better question? I sometimes feel people think he is poor, but he has two houses, two trucks, a camper, a college fund (according to him) for Dylan. Why wouldn't he have a laptop & wifi?

Did you get the impression that when LE said "no activity since.." that meant the cell phone was turned off (or unable to use for whatever reason)? Or does that mean no communication sent or received?

Honestly, I do not take the fact that a "Hispanic-looking man" was in town on November 19 as a "lead."

Seems to me that if Dylan was out and about that morning, the person who reported the "Hispanic stranger" should have seen him. Or someone local should have seen him. Why should this man be any more likely to have seen Dylan? Or do we suppose he "took" Dylan, and yet made sure a local got a good look at him in a way he would remember?

LE is asking for this person to come forward, as it would be irresponsible not to do so. But with the accuracy of eyewitnesses as to details being notoriously poor, I would hardly call this a lead, especially with such a vague description.

I'm so with you there. I bet a half dozen "hispanic looking men" saw him that day. Probably more. I think either there's got to be some good reason they released this, such as the man or a local would remember, or it's completely random hoping someone will come forward with something. The next release could well say "a white male saw him!" and be just about as useful, IMO.

I didn't take it to mean that they think the mystery man did anything, but if he was out there wandering around that morning he may have seen someone else that could be more important. It's quite possible that the it never occurred to the guy that LE might want to speak to him, but hearing they're wanting to speak to a "Hispanic man 45-50 years old who was looking at rental properties near Vallecito a few days before Thanksgiving and ran out of gas" could make him think, "Hey, that's me!" and call them. It's still possible that he didn't see anything useful, but at least it's a start. MOO

Personally, I take no activity since sometime Sunday night by LE to mean the phone was OFF. What does activity mean? Sent & Received? We know he got texts on Monday from R, MR & ER, but Bender said "no activity" so....
