I thought maybe ice would act as a preservative, I guess.

This is regards to salt water, I am not sure if fresh water is different.

"A 2002 study in the journal Legal Medicine examined nine bodies that had drifted hundreds of kilometers in cold waters off the coast of Portugal and Spain. Bodies recovered in the first week were in good condition, but the beginning signs of decomposition were present on a body recovered after eight days. The two bodies recovered after 20 days were highly decomposed and could only be identified through DNA analysis or dental records. As for warmer water, A 2008 study on two human bodies recovered following aircraft accidents found one body off of Sicily to be partially skeletonized after 34 days and a second body off of Namibia to be completely skeletonized after three months.*"

Maybe he knows someone who works there, and met them somewhere?

Possibly. Also he probably went there because the marshal's office is in Bayfield and the sheriff's office is in Durango, further away.

Actually, I think the cold water definitely would be a preservative. The body wouldn't deteriorate nearly as fast as it would in warm water.

On FMDR see post by WB about 2 hours ago. I hope the admin can get a handle on some of those people. If they want the Dr. Phil show to bring awareness to Dylan's case, telling someone to read up on the story before posting is not a good way to welcome those just seeing the story for the first time. Just sayin'.

I've been wondering why they had brought Sadie along after all this time (since a tracking scent isn't likely to last this long), but something hit me today that I don't remember being discussed yet. Is it to help identify any scent the cadaver dogs might find? In case I'm not being clear, if they get a hit from the lake/ice, would Sadie also get a hit from it because of whatever scent items they used if it was Dylan they detected? Sorry if I'm still jumbling things, but I'm not sure how to make it clearer. TIA

That's a good question. Would scent remain on clothing or other items if it was in the water that long? Or perhaps they are using Sadie in hopes she could track down the backpack?

wonder why he didn't call 911?

I think that your saying that if one of the HRD dogs alerts to the scent of human decomposition, can a tracking dog be given a scent article of Dylan's to "confirm" that Dylan is the source of the decomp. scent.

I'm not an expert but I would say no, that wouldn't be possible. The scent that a live person is totally different than the sent that a dead body gives off. The HRD dogs will be alerting to the scent released by any dead human body. The tracking dog would be alerting to the scent that an alive Dylan would leave behind. MOO.

I hate to ask this question, but IF Dylan is found in the lake, what kind of condition would his body be in? Would they be able to see signs of trauma? Would the temperature of the lake preserve the body somehow? Sorry. :( Just curious.

Interesting article regarding a diver who was found after 17yrs in Lake Tahoe...

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/09/us-diver-body-idUSTRE7785WI20110809

And another in Lake Michigan...

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...-diver-disappeared-13-years-article-1.1142045

So it does seem as though the cold water and deep depths can preserve a body.

I can't answer your questions unfortunately, but here's a pic of Sadie and one of the other two (can't tell them apart quite yet) sniffing very intently! (from the FB K-9 Forensics album)

Hopefully this works, first attempt at embedding a photo:

I should add there's no indication on the page/photo as to what they're doing here - if they found something or they're just sniffing, etc. Thought it was a great photo of them in action though. Also, looks like Sadie works with the other dogs in this type of search, at least sometimes.

Our story from Thursday, Oct. 18:
Eighteen homes in Lake Vista Estates got pre-evacuation notices Wednesday afternoon when the Vallecito

BBM

I wonder if they also do the reverse 911 or public notification calls for missing children?

Seems you need to register your cell? I know the colleges do this for their students/parents (or at least here in Ohio).

Any locals?

I guess we don't really know if he called 911 or the Sheriff, or whether he drove into Durango after stopping at the Marshall's office in Bayfield. :waitasec:

It's in the transcript of his uncut interview.

Well, I told them that I hadn’t heard from Dylan all day and I didn’t think much of it and when I got down to the Marshall’s Office or to his friend Ryan’s house or Fernando…anyway... when I ran across his friends and they hadn’t heard from him – then that’s when I went over to the Marshall’s Office and told them that, you know, we need to find him, make contact with him. They were going to put out like a wellness check or they just notify the local authorities to keep an eye out for him and make contact with him so somebody can “bang him in the head” and say, “Hey, your dad’s trying to get a hold of you. Your friends are trying to get a hold of you. You need to communicate to somebody.
But at that moment in time…, I felt the need to address this issue with mom, so I immediately asked her had she heard from him and indicated to her that I hadn’t heard from him all day and that I was at the Marshall’s office taking care of this, and that’s when pretty much all hell broke loose with her.

I just had to register my cell phone (Denver metro area - one of the suburbs) for something that I think was reverse 911 but I can't find the article that inspired it or the site I registered on LOL.

NOTE-I MISUNDERSTOOD SO THIS POST IS MY MISUNDERSTANDING AND NOT A RUMOR OR NOTICE OF ANYTHING

Lord, I thought I saw a notice that they had found someone in the lake and almost had a heart attack. I feel like I am going to vomit right now. I misunderstood the report though and apparently they cut holes in the ice just to help the dogs look.

Question-is this one of those bodies of water where they will never be able to completely rule it out? That would be just cruel.

Dylan's missing child poster listed Bayfield as the missing City.

It's a good possibility. The lake is huge and up to 80 feet deep, plus most of the bottom is probably cluttered - covered with stumps. The whole area had to be logged before the dam was built to create the lake in the early 1940s.
