Someone was willing to rent you a cabin without any ID? Those are some pretty trusting landlords. I helped my parents rent their summer cabin out and they practically wanted fingerprints taken. LOL They settled for drivers licenses and car tags though.

Here in Cali they always take down that info because of Forest Fires. They want to know exactly who left their campfire unattended if need be.

Nope, but then again we don't have the wildfires like other places do. I can see where that may be an issue where you went.

The cabin did require ID but that's cause we got a military discount on it so they wanted to see the military ID. They didn't ask for anything beyond that. Guess an active service member they found trustworthy.

A friend of mine OWNS a lot in a private campground....He has given me the password for the gate and a sticker for my car....and no one ever saw/ask/had my name except for my friend. A cursory look at the owner's would in no way lead to me. There are many ways that an RSO or even a SO could have escaped notice.

I came to this case at after watching DP and well, I felt the same way this person did. Then I read everything I could find to see if I was missing anything, but I do still feel pretty much the same. So know all the facts, hasn't changed my initial opinion of the people in surrounding this case.

I've never had to show ID when camping. And if a vehicle plate number was supposed to be on anything I wrote it down myself. I don't recall anyone checking if it was correct.

I recently rented a beachside campground in Malibu state park for my DD's birthday weekend. I had to show my Drivers license and another form of ID as well. I don't know if that is only California or not though.

eta: And i was paying cash.

eta2: AND they wrote down my license plate number.

I'd venture to guess it differs by campground, not just state. I recently camped with family (in California) and they not only didn't check ID, they just took our word for it on who we were meeting and gave us a map to the site where other family was already located. Another place I've been to had a "self pay" thing where you were supposed to put your driver's license # down, put the money in an envelope, and drop it into a slot, no ID check of course (and I'd say maybe 50% of people even bothered to pay/fill out the envelope).

Do any locals happen to know how the campground "check ins" typically work in that area?

I don't really care about right or wrong in opinions. I just really do not want to wrongly accuse someone of something with so little hard facts to go on. In my mind, I think Bayou said this, that Dylan is the victim and both MR and ER are secondary victims. It's going to take a lot of solid proof to make me think otherwise about either one of them. On a personal level neither of them are my cup of tea, so I wouldn't want to ever be friends with either of them.

FWIW... the place I mentioned going to recently that didn't require any ID did give us a pamphlet about fire danger/fire safety and warned us that the fire danger that weekend was high, but didn't take down a full name or license #. Come to think of it they probably should have, but they didn't.

The only place I ever recall having to show ID to camp was at Yosemite, I think because they required reservations so far in advance.

BBM - I sure hope so! I think one of my biggest fears on this one is Dylan not being found.

Traveling along the western side of the reservoir on County Rd. 501, you pass through the community of Vallecito. Turn north on County Rd. 500 and go about 3 miles.

That sounds right, and if it is, look how close it is!

Well that's different. I have gone camping at private, county, state and federal campgrounds and never had to show ID. The only thing that we have used is my parents "Golden Eagle" pass, or what ever they call it now, to get a discount at federal parks.

It's definitely different, but it's on my mind now, because it's the only place I ever recall having to give them my tag number. LOL. Of course that brought back other memories as well. The fun part, though, once you get that pass, you don't have to deal with all the security checks when you leave and come back for the time the pass is valid for.

Looks like it! Good find.

I know that some had researched an RV place nearby that had a lot of RSOs living there too. I'm trying to find the info but it was several threads ago and I haven't been able to track it down yet. This does look like the closest campground, and probably the one MR was referring to Dylan sometimes walking to (note I say probably.. I don't think MR ever specified which campground).
