and I am pretty sure that Dylan's mom felt the same way when she was packing her son's bag for his first visit with dad since the September hearing.

It sure seems to me that his mother was on top of things and paid attention to his safety (from what we heard). I am sure she would have checked that he had his charger so he could contact her.

Well there is a reason LE took the ipod (thanks for clarifying). I would think it has more than just music on it. Or perhaps they can see what songs were played on what date/times if it is just music. I'll bet it has internet capabilities though.

The only other possibility I can think of re: the phone is if his dad took it from him for some reason on Sunday night - maybe trying to visit and irritated that Dylan kept texting and not fully paying attention or something? And then he forgot to give it back Monday or figured he'd give it back when he got home from his errands?

I would think he would've mentioned that by now, both to LE and the media, so it seems pretty unlikely but it's another thought I've had.

ETA: I know that Dylan had the phone on him, so if dad did take it from him Sunday night, Dylan must've found it on Monday. I dunno... I think I just talked myself out of this even being a possiblity. :(

Sorry to quote myself. :) Another post reminded me, we don't know if Dylan has/had the phone, only that as of that Monday, it wasn't at dad's house (according to dad). I have been working off of the assumption that the phone is with Dylan, but it just struck me it's entirely possible the phone's not even with him.

I am going to check it out right now. I have Verizon and just the other day I thougth how great it would be if I could do that. thanks.

Google "send free texts online". For most of those sites all you need is to enter an email address and they don't verify them. I went through hell because of one of those sites.

Dylan Redwine did not run away, police say

Time passed, lack of cellphone activity raise suspicion

“There’s a combination of factors,” Bender said. “There’s been the passage of time without any sightings; Dylan was not a visitor but had friends here; he has a history of staying in contact with his family and friends;

BBM

Based on past behaviors, LE determined that he did not run away. Whatever his normal pattern of communication (texting/calling) LE has determined that had not been happening upon his arrival at the airport. JMO

So if he could have called/texted someone he would have...
But he did text his mother to let her know his dad had picked him up at the airport. We don't know if that was the last communication. We only know that after some time in the evening, his phone records show no activity.

BENDER: My understanding is -- and our investigators have checked his cell phone. Also, cell phones have GPS`s, so if they`re turned on, that gives a general location of the person. And we have been following up on those right along, and there`s been no activity on his phone whatsoever since Sunday evening sometime.

A normal iPod does not, I believe, have any internet capabilities. The iTouch (iPod with a touch interface like the iPhone) DOES have wifi. You can't make phone calls but you'd be able to send email if you had access (like through a hotspot.)

Someone asked abt iPod vs iPad taken from the home. Per this video, it was an iPod. This reporter spoke to Mark, so he may be the source for that.

Regarding the charger, it's been reported Dylan had it with him, and it's missing now too.
His cell phone and charger and various other items were in his backpack, which he supposedly had with him.

As far as what LE considers to still be possibilities:

"Investigators are no longer looking at the possibility of Dylan being a run-away, but we still view this as a search and not a recovery effort," said Dan Bender, Public Information Officer for the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Bender said there are two options at play: 1) That Dylan ran away. 2) That Dylan was abducted or foul play was involved.

Then:

On Wednesday, the La Plata County Sheriff's Department said they no longer believed Dylan ran away. Earlier in the week they said there are two possible outcomes: 1) that Dylan ran away 2) that he was abducted or foul play was involved.

Authorities say they don't believe Dylan Redwine ran away and say this is a criminal investigation.

Or maybe the phone was at Dad's and he said it wasn't. I know when Samantha Koenig went missing her co-workers said her phone wasn't left at her job, then it was, then LE refused to talk about the phone at all and clarify where it was or if they knew. Just a thought.

There are apps out there where you can use the iTouch as a phone, but you do have to have wi/fi. My son has one and had so many free minutes a month with this app. Can't think of it now though. Also, Kik is a popular texting app with the kiddos. My son has a regular crappy cell phone, so he uses his iTouch for Instagram, Kik and other things with his friends.

Phone off (for whatever reason) and no contact with his friends after 8pm the night before he is reported missing and no contact the next morning is very bothersome. Nowadays there are many ways to contact people.

We have been focusing on Dylan calling/texting his friend(s) Monday morning.

I have a new question to pose: Once Dylan woke up Monday morning and his dad was still away on his shopping trip, why didn't Dylan call his dad and ask him when he would be home ? I can picture Dylan quickly getting impatient and wanting to know when his dad would be home to drive him to his friend's house.

Given the circumstances Monday morning, I would expect to see a trail of text/call's to his friend(s) and his Dad that morning, and maybe even his Mom or brother as well. He had up to 4 hours sitting and waiting alone in the house between 7:30AM and 11:30AM. Instead we have nothing , nada, 4 hours of silence...

Google voice is one option and I don't think there is any limits with it.

One last thing regarding Mountain Lions, I am reminded of an episode of Psych (I loooove this show, check it out if you've never seen it, the 2 main characters are hilarious in my opinion...)The show takes place in Santa Barbara, a place well known for ML activity (not to be confused with MR...kidding, sorry ) Anyway, in this particular case, there is foul play. But the perp PURPOSELY places the body in the wildnerness near where MLs have been seen so that it would appear the victim fell prey to the animal, should the body be found. (Sorry so graphic, still hoping for a miracle).

He'd need to know the phone numbers for his friends though. If his cell phone wasn't working, then Google Voice (or Skype) wouldn't be of much use.

And if the phone was somehow incapacited, Dylan could've called mom from the landline. She probably has the friend's numbers, since they lived near Bayfield and the kids attended Bayfield MS together until recently.

It's troubling that neither Dylan nor his father apparently called anyone from the house Monday, by cell or landline.

I just did it on my Verizon website. But, the fact still remains you have to have an internet connection to do it. Also I needed the phone number to send the text too. I like it really handy if I am on my computer and my phone is in another room and I don't walk in to get it. lol Thanks for info.

I was so determined to catch up before posting much but I can't keep up! Someone has probably replied to this already but just in case, yes, we have 411 in the US. Although I'm not sure how many kids Dylan's age know about it, same as most kids that age giving you funny looks if you suggest looking something up in a <gasp!> phone book.

Yes but you can't get cell phone numbers with 411.

I sure would like to know if Dad had internet service. Because all the scenarios of the dead phone wouldn't matter if Dad had internet and that Ipad or Ipod that LE took was working. Dylan would most likely have contacted his friends using that if his phone didn't work. And we do know that Dad did have a landline....although I agree that if my phone wasn't working I can think of 2 people that I could call whose numbers I have memorized.

A quick question because I don't know, can you make calls or send/receive texts on an iPod? I know you can on an iPad, but IIRC the article said what they took from the house was an iPod. I was under the (possibly mistaken)impression those were just used for music, possibly video on some of the newest ones?

And just thinking Mom could have called the landline. I would think she would have the number but maybe not. jmo
