Crews search the Midway Landfill for the remains of Kelsey Berreth, Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, in Fountain, Colo. Berreth fiance Patrick Frazee is charged with her murder.

Authorities begin landfill search for Kelsey Berreth's remains

Authorities say they have reason to believe Berreth's remains ended up in the Midway Landfill near the El Paso/Pueblo county line. They have targeted a specific area at the site.

"Based on the information we've gathered and received in the investigation, it's all pointed right here for us," said Cmdr. Chris Adams with the Woodland Park Police Department.
Ok, well they seem to believe she is there! Hmm.

In the arrest affidavit KK is quoted as saying as she watched the fire,
the tote began melting and left a "hump" which she assumed was
a body.
Somewhere else it was said there were small round beads of the
melted plastic in the bottom of burn pit.
I'm pretty sure there will be bone pieces remaining in the
'scooped up' remains. And if they're in the landfill, they will be found due to the precise method of searching that's been
described. I'm very optimistic at this point.

I also wondered this - if, in fact, the "tote" was one of those heavy plastic Rubbermaid type things, and it melted...there might be the possibility of bone fragment encased in that melt.

:-(

I bet when she learned of KK's connection to KB and then realized her gun was in the car that she took AND discovered it may have been fired, that she just about panicked!
I sure would! I think that's what happened because of the vague wording about Meghan being suspicious of the "different condition" of the gun. Maybe there was a smell that indicated it had recently been fired?

All-weather construction Heavy-duty hardware Reinforced padlock hole Large molded handles for easy carrying Interior hanging file folder slots Solid steel hinge rod Meets airline requirements 100 recycled plastic Model Number: 2820-20P
IMO

I wonder what the closest to this model they sell at say...Walmart?

I’m truly hoping PF screwed up big time and he bought the tote there while on his shopping trip.

Then I continue to marvel at her good luck, what with the illegal gun and the bad plates. Until, you know, it ran out :)

No idea if KK knew the gun was in the car, or if she shot the missing bullet at...something on the way down or back, but I don't think it has anything to do with KB. Speaking solely for myself, of course, but the friend's gun issue may have been her own doing, or that of someone else she loaned the car to, or any number of other explanations. She appears to be sloppy with the weapon.
I completely agree.

It’s weird, could use an answer, but is likely irrelevant to the murder of KB.

The murder likely happened a day before KK even picked up her friend’s car, that contained the gun.

Would it also be possible for some bone fragments, teeth perhaps, encased in the plastic once it cooled?
It would kind of make sense.

IANAS (I am not a scientist), but it would stand to reason that melted plastic would cover bone fragments during the burning/melting process.

Besides that, if he left melted plastic behind, I’d expect there to be bone fragments right along with it.

Maybe they did find something like that, but it’s awaiting further testing.

I hope that plastic will have somewhat protected the burnt bones.

"Our results show that the identification via DNA analysis is reliably and reproducibly possible from well preserved and semi-burnt bones. In black burnt bones the DNA was highly degraded and in some cases no nuclear DNA was left, leaving mitochondrial DNA analysis as an option. Blue–grey burnt bones lead only sporadically to authentic profiles. The investigation of blue–grey–white burnt bones barely led to reliable results."

PF may have done LE a favor by putting her in that plastic tote.

Where's the evidence for your opinion? Dan May has been a prosecutor for 36 years. he has been elected three times for D.A. There's a reason for that - results. Do you truly believe that an experienced prosecutor as he is would risk his reputation by prosecuting in haste?

This is a no-body case. They are notoriously difficult to prosecute. As a result, the evidence has to be super powerful for such a prosecution to occur at all.

This is a case backed by the efforts and reports of the FBI and CBI, not some keystone cop operation. Does anyone truly believe that these powerful agencies with all their resources and knowledge and a prosecutor as experienced as May, got it wrong while some internet sleuthers got it right?

The chances of that are super slim, IMO. And I have yet to see any facts presented that supports such a premise. In fact, the facts appear to me to overwhelmingly support PF as the murderer.

I believe that through a longer investigation they would have gotten KK without having to give away the store when it comes to her own involvement. In any event, my sincere hope is that she does the full three years and gets the 100K fine. Some here have said that's unlikely and I don't get why.

LE included the information about the gun in the Arrest Affidavit--and sealed the AA from PF and the public-- because they believe it is related to the case. You don't have to believe her but apparently the FBI did.

He did law enforcement a lot of favors here; hopefully this is just another one.

PF is to crime, what Pauly Shore is to acting.

How do you bow your head and pray at the Thanksgiving table?

Right?! And when they asked him what he was thankful for, wonder how long he had to think and word his response?? Can you imagine?

I took "heap" to mean a large mass in the bin/tote that could have been a body. A folded-up body with clothing and other items may have looked like such a thing. Or it could have been something else entirely (though I think her body was in there). It's not terribly illuminating, except that we know the tote was not empty. That's about it.

  • #795
The “lump” comment has been bothering me because a whole body seems bigger than a lump, even if curled up. A lump to me might be a whole bunch of other stuff thrown together (like clothes, towels, other random items). Maybe he dumped or buried the body but burned ... other stuff?
I believe th AA called it a "Heap". I originally thought it was a "hump".

Well folks the first 75 cubic yards of the landfill search has been
examined. I'm guessing those 25 truckloads were clean, well
not really. They should be locking things up about now.

<modsnip: quoted post was removed as off topic>

In this case, the most they could've had against anyone was tampering, until KK talked. She did not know that but the state did.

I don't think she will do any time, BTW. Or not much. It's pathetic but necessary, IMO.

If one has a concealed weapon license, transporting a loaded firearm in a vehicle is legal in my state. It does not have to be in a trunk. As long as the vehicle has not been altered in anyway (to hide a gun) the loaded or unloaded firearm can be in the glove compartment. Our open carry laws also allow guns to be carried in a vehicle on the seat. Where one gets into trouble is transporting a loaded gun from one state that allows it to another state that does not. When we apply for CCWs, this is literally gone over in class by LE.
