CO - Parents charged with abandoning 1-month old baby on street - December 25, 2024

A woman who found the baby told police she saw a couple arguing around 8 a.m. in the 7400 block of Pecos Street and later saw a man walk to the median, put down a car seat and walk away.

The woman went over to the car seat and found a newborn baby inside wearing a diaper and yelled at the man to come back, to which he responded “That’s her kid, give it to her,” and continued walking away.

Investigators later contacted the baby’s mother, Thurman, who told them she left the apartment she shares with Sims after they argued “about her intoxication levels.”

Thurman told police she called her mom to pick her up and started walking southbound on Pecos when she saw Sims walking toward her with the baby in a car seat and set it down in the center median, but she kept walking south because she didn’t want “to create more problems.”

Sims told investigators he took the baby outside and yelled at Thurman to get it but she refused, so he left the baby on the sidewalk and went home because “he had work in the morning.”

....Thurman was released on a $50,000 bail and is set to appear in court Feb. 7. Sims’ $50,000 bail was later lowered to $2,500, according to court records. He is still in custody and set to appear in court Feb. 7.

12/26/24 Update: In court, Adams County Judge Jacque Lyn Russell said 33-year-old Christina Thurman was a "danger to your son -- both physical & emotional danger to your son." Thurman & her boyfriend, 42-year-old Jarvis Sims, are facing child abuse charges after Sims allegedly left their baby boy on the median in Adams County near 7490 Pecos Street, just north of Highway 36 & close to Denver's northern city limits. Thurman & Sims are both being held on a $50,000 bond. Neither have been formally charged, but deputies are recommending charges of misdemeanor child abuse & felony child abuse. They're due back in court Monday [12/30/24] for a formal return filing of charges & both have been instructed to have no contact with the child.
12/30/24 Update: On Monday, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Christina Thurman & Jarvis Sims were charged with child abuse knowingly/recklessly no injury & reckless endangerment. Sims was also charged with violation of a protection order. Sims, who has been held in the Adams County jail since the child was found, was given a $2,500 cash/surety bond on the condition that his sobriety is monitored. Thurman was released on a $50,000 bail & Sims’ $50,000 bail was later lowered to $2,500. He is still in custody. Next Disposition hearing for both on 2/7/25 @ 9:30am.

Nothing for Thurman yet. And now that I look at Sims' dates - I see only one pertaining to the case we are following. I shall leave the others in for the time being & just leave him on 2/14/25 hearing date for this case.

A man was sentenced Monday for child abuse after abandoning a baby on a median in Adams County on Christmas morning in 2024.

Jarvis Sims, 42, pleaded guilty to child abuse and received a one-year deferred sentence. Charges of reckless endangerment and violation of a protection order were dismissed in the plea.
