Matching a bullet is much much harder than matching a shell casing.

The reason is with a shell casing all they have to do is put it in a forensic microscope and compare the firing pin marks on the casing. They can usually tell right away.

With a bullet however first off the bullet is usually deformed or just a part of the bullet. It is usually crushed by the impact of whatever it hit. Lead bullets are very soft and deform easily upon impact.

So LE has to match in much harder ways. One way is taking scrapings and disolving in a solution liquid and then getting the chemical compound makeup of the bullet. Can take weeks or more to do that.

LE seldom has an intact bullet that has not been deformed . Especially from both shooting sites they are trying to compare. So they usualy have to resort to the long chemical compound testing.

The other way they can do it is if there is enough of the bullet left to see the markings the barrel made on the bullet as it traveled through the barrel. They can then use microscope to compare the markings.

At the gun range when I look at the dirt mound for the bullets I usually see totally deformed pieces of lead. And the bullet sometimes doesnt stay in one piece. Pieces break off sometimes.


Side note:
Kinda gruesome but that is why bullets are made of mostly lead is because you want the bullet to deform and expand into a larger diameter so that when it goes through a person or animal it causes maximum damage. The whole "clean kill" thing. Remember bullets are typically designed and meant to kill something. Or at least originally were designed for that. Target practice bullets sometimes have different metals so it varies a lot on how much they expand.
Copper jacketed, hollow points, solid lead round nose, etc. Many types of bullets nowadays.

Driving towards Boulder:

"The man was driving toward Boulder when a vehicle, described as an “older” white Toyota or Honda sedan, pulled up alongside him and the man’s window shattered.

Boulder County deputies showed up to investigate and determined someone had indeed shot out the window after they found a bullet hole in the man’s Chevrolet truck.

The sheriff’s office says there is currently no motive for the shooting. It is asking anyone who saw the shooting to contact Boulder County Detective Jeff Pelletier at 303-441-3635 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS."

Eta: Did anyone from the Task Force show up? I hope so. I will if course let them know in case, but they are a Task Force, I'm sure they're on it. We are talking about Two Unsolved Homicides and One Unsolved Attempted Murder.

So, I'm noting for potential reference in case there is a relation that this Friday morning of the shooting it was Veteran's Day.

I'm not sure how impacted traffic might have been for morning commutes.

Have we had any other early morning/6am-ish Friday shatterings? Note to crosscheck Forager's spreadsheet (linked in my signature).

Was there any activity this time last year? How active are Fridays?

Anything else occurring near 6am on other days of the week?

Holiday weekends?

It seems to me that LE would know whether road rage is likely or not by asking the driver of the victim whether he was doing anything that may have upset the other guy.

In any mild road rage experiences I have been in the common thing is I always knew what the other guy was pizzed about. Whether they perceived me to cut them off or whether I was going too slow or something like that.

So I think that driver victim really should know whether road rage is likely or not.

A victim doesnt always know what they did to pizz someone off but usually they do IMO.

So it really should not be such a mystery to LE if road rage or not.
LE probably would not tell us those details so we are left to wonder if it was something like that or the victim has no clue why the guy pulled alongside and took a pot shot at him.

The one thing that makes me think it could be a random shooter is if he pulled up alongside him then he could have easily shot him so the fact that the guy was not hit by the bullet makes me think that maybe it was someone deciding to randomly terrorize this guy.

BTW Hello all my friends on this thread. We had quite a ride with it and I am so glad it died down. I hope the shooter hasnt decided to start another wave.

I think you are probably right about the victim being able to validate the road rage theory, but that assumes that the victim is willing to report his own behavior and to accuse the attacker. Sometimes, however, the victim(s) dummy up. I saw that a few times when I was trying to survey press reports of attacks on motorists last year. Most seemed to involve acquaintances in urban areas. The victims drive away from a bar after a argument, their car absorbs a clip of bullets a few blocks away, and no one saw anyone or knew any names. Less likely in Boulder County, I'll grant.

I remember putting a marker in the "Other On-road Incidents" layer of the case map for that one. It was, indeed, way south of the NoCO incidents.

I'm not sure, though, whether it makes sense to keep mapping window shatterings. During 2015, after the Romero shooting, the press reported every window shattering it heard about. With a couple of minor exceptions, that stopped in late 2015, so when we do occasionally get a report of a window shattering, we don't have much context against which to judge it. Road debris? The hypothesized I-25 Window Shatterer, or just beer fueled recreational gunplay?

Yesterday morning's shot on that driver was not rage, imo. This is evident by the latest downstairs post re: the suspect's description, linked above in post #453.

Is this our guy?? Or maybe someone connected to some group? This was attempted murder, imo. Possible gang initiation/affiliation? Radical Religious/ Political motivation (as discussed in earlier threads)? Related or unrelated to CR, JJ and Connole?

And is LE and the media going to release what should already have been released, imo? Sounds like maybe weird sideways flying road debris is now weird sideways flying road rage. Trying to control people from panicking or maybe carrying weapons of their own? All eyes and ears need to be out right now. I'm afraid it's starting again and the next driver shot at might not be so lucky.

After a brief review of our spreadsheet by Forager, I'm not seeing anything the same time and day wise yet....unfortunately many times of prior incidents are unknown. Is there something I'm missing? Does this incidence crosscheck with any other incident(s) time AND day wise?

Well, this is interesting. There was a shooting on HWY 36 in 2004. A long time ago, but interesting to note. Sounds like near the same spot?!
