CHAFFEE COUNTY SHERIFF UPDATE - Post From CCSO FB

“CHAFFEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Salida, Colorado
PRESS RELEASE
November 10, 2020

Today marks the 6-month anniversary of the Suzanne Morphew missing person case.

Suzanne Morphew, a loving mother, devoted friend and wife, was last seen by her husband, Barry Morphew, on May 10, 2020. Since that time, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office has worked closely and tirelessly with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the 11th Judicial District in an intensive investigation to find Suzanne Morphew.

In that time, there have been numerous searches, countless investigative interviews, and hundreds of tips reported in this case.

“We thank you, our community, for your assistance, concern and patience,” said Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze. “Suzanne is missing. We in law enforcement hope for the best but prepare for the worst. The worst-case scenario is that something unlawful occurred, and as such we go about our investigation ensuring we are working within the rules of law and treating everything we learn as potential evidence for court.”

While specific case information is not available, Sheriff Spezze assures residents the case remains a priority. “To preserve the integrity of this investigation, we cannot reveal all we have learned nor all that we are doing, but we understand your frustration in wanting this case resolved quickly. That said, with each day that passes, we learn new information in this case.”

Although the winter months are approaching, the task force assembled to investigate Suzanne Morphew’s disappearance continues to move forward and will conduct additional searches and other casework.

In one aspect of the case, the task force continues to focus on Suzanne Morphew’s social media presence as part of the investigation. Investigators say Suzanne kept in touch with friends she loved dearly. They also believe that sometimes in these types of cases that people don’t come forward with information for concern that they may get someone in trouble. To those who may be fearful to come forward, they can reach out anonymously. Once investigators know your concerns, they can address them.

Anyone who may have engaged with Suzanne on Facebook, Instagram, Voxer, FaceTime or WhatsApp and would like to share new information or come forward if they haven’t been interviewed is asked to contact the Suzanne Morphew tip line, regardless of how insignificant you think the information may be, or whether you think investigators are already aware of it.”

Suzanne Morphew Tip line: 719-312-7530.

Wow. Speeze is basically saying - we know everyone who communicated with SM via these apps, and you can come forward anonymously. That is by far the biggest tell they’ve put in a press release.

WhatsApp is a whole new ball of wax too. Maybe that is the app she used to tell her friends the truth about BM...

We used to use Voxer at my school to communicate amongst staff. For example, if a student elopes from campus and we are following them and out of reach of our building WiFi it will still send the message. I know from others that the WiFi was not great at the Morphew home so maybe it was used for that same reason. Or SM used it on her bike rides where cell service was spotty.
I believe that the cell coverage is non-existent at their home, and wifi the reliable source to communicate from home.

So, is Voxer something that would show up on a cellphone billing account? Or, as an APP, is only visible on that users cellphone. Just curious.

According to Wikipedia, the service is free so I doubt it shows on your bill.

Google indicates there's Voxer for web so I believe you can use it on your computer as well as mobile device.

voxer - بحث Google

It's a free app, so it would never show on a cell phone bill.
Even if you had the app hidden on your actual phone, it will still show that you downloaded it in your google play store or the app store.

So why did an adult need some of these more secretive type of messaging apps? I don’t think it’s common for an almost 50 year old woman to be interested in these more teen oriented types of private messaging tools that are known to hide messages from parents. Was he controlling her phone and reading her texts so she had to ensure some privacy? This poor woman. And why the inquiry by LE about FaceTime? Could somebody have been on FaceTime and have seen something or heard something in real time? Jmo

BBM:

I love it when LE plays with BM's head.

"Task force assembled" = "You're outmanned and outgunned."

Also, the "Investigators say…." line is brilliant.

What do you figure the odds are that he had no idea SM used an app called "Voxer?"

Oh, man. I hope that's the case, because if so:

"SUR-PRIIIIISE!"

Good question.
I asked my 17 yr old if she's ever heard of Voxer, and she looked at me like I just grew a second head.
Nope, she's never heard of it & her friends don't use it.

If you search here on WS all the bazillion (roughly) cases in all the years we've been here, this app is only mentioned in 5 other cases besides's SM's.

So, it's NOT at all well known.

I suppose it's possible this app was suggested to her by someone (counsellor, friend, daughter?), to keep her messages strictly private.

I completely agree. I think they are looking for information in regards to what was going on in her marriage.
I think LE knows/may suspect Suzanne was talking to a man? The part about getting someone in trouble and the Voxer encrypted private chats ...
Maybe the "friend" Suzanne was supposedly talking to on Saturday was not a female?

CHAFFEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Salida, Colorado

PRESS RELEASE

November 10, 2020

Today marks the 6-month anniversary of the Suzanne Morphew missing person case.

Suzanne Morphew, a loving mother, devoted friend and wife.... THIS quote from the Sheriff's office first says "loving" mother, then "devoted" friend and then just wife. It minimizes Suzanne's role as wife. I wondered if perhaps the sheriff is also encouraging the daughters or Barry's mother to share information. It is certainly a thought provoking press release and strengthens the hope for justice to happen for Suzanne.

I think something like that is possible, but I do believe she was talking to her friend on Saturday as well.

So I think this is probably a deeper dive into what was going on in her life/marriage, as opposed to the messages with her close friend.

In regards to the timeline and this case in general, I believe that Saturday communication is absolutely vital; that friend is huge in all of this.

Thank you for just saying it. This is where I’m at right now.

To drift away from your comment, I’m now concerned (a little) that she may have intentionally met with someone she thought she could trust. But then I go back to BM appearing to to create this job to get out of town as an alibi, unless he really wanted away that weekend for another reason. This press release has my mind all over. IMO

Because the adult doesn’t want someone seeing their messages. That other someone could be a spouse, LE, or anyone that might not condone what they are saying or doing on that app.

From the Sheriff’s PR:
Suzanne Morphew, a loving mother, devoted friend and wife, was last seen by her husband, Barry Morphew, on May 10, 2020.

Normally this sentence would read:
Suzanne Morphew, a loving mother, devoted friend and wife, was last seen by her husband, Barry Morphew, on May 10, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. at her home.

Aside from leaving out the bike ride bit, leaving out the time and place she was last seen is IMO, very telling. They’re acknowledging that BM was the last to see her, but they’re not buying his story.

I thought about that as well, and I think there could be some selective wording to get BM excited or frustrated...

I really don’t think think LE has to use these press releases to spook BM. He KNOWS they have/are investigating him. IMO

Quite frankly, after six months of learning who BM is I'm sick of him. I can't imagine how Suzanne tolerated him for all those years.
I'm encouraged by the release today, tik-tock and I don't mean the App ... :D

I don’t think that’s the purpose, but it is an added benefit.

They probably don't, but I would think it would sure spook him that they are not mentioning any of the facts he presented and now wanting to know about her digital social communications. That has to eat at him and the thought I just had is, what if he just found out about some of the apps she used...
