I don’t know if this has been discussed as I am behind on this thread, but the scientists at UW in Seattle have been diligently working on tests for the Coronavirus since the first inkling of an outbreak in China. They’re basically heroes taking this on themselves for their community when the federal government failed them. Working round the clock while we were told this was nothing. o_O Thank you UW Medicine Virology Lab!https://www.npr.org/sections/health...k-seattle-this-lab-was-ready-to-start-testing

When Coronavirus Struck Seattle, This Lab Was Ready To Start Testing

Jerome and other virologists started the process in January, after hearing reports about the coronavirus outbreak in China.

"Our opinion was, this is probably not going to be a problem, this is probably going to be a waste of our effort and some money, but we owe it to the people of our area to be prepared," he says.

So the scientists developed an assay and began using it test specimens sent in for research purposes.

At first, the tests found no infections, says Dr. Alex Greninger, the lab's assistant director. Then, on Feb. 28, one came back positive.

Around 70 people were left trapped after a hotel used to quarantine people who have had recent contact with coronavirus patients collapsed in China’s eastern Fujian province, officials said.

Xinjia Hotel collapsed around 7.30pm local time (11.30 GMT) and around 23 people had been rescued by 9pm, according to a Quanzhou city government statement reported by AFP.

The 80-room hotel was recently converted to a quarantine facility for people who had recent contact with coronavirus patients, the People’s Daily state newspaper reported. State news agency Xinhua said rescue efforts were ongoing.

I really hope everyone can be rescued ASAP.

That’s all they need. Ugh

Restaurants clean like crazy to beat Covid-19 eat-at-home trend

Friday’s announcement that a barista in a Seattle Starbucks was diagnosed with Covid-19 made real what fast-food chains have been preparing for since the coronavirus arrived in the U.S. two months ago.

Starbucks Corp., like other national chains such as McDonald’s Corp., met regularly with employees to explain risks and detail how to minimize them. And like other food-serving companies, its workers started sanitizing like crazy in anticipation that a highly communicable illness that’s killed 14 Americans – 13 of them in the greater Seattle area – could be stopped...

Nope. We don’t have mandated sick pay in this country. So now I’m staying home. No eating out. No coffee runs.

SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus. Many media are using the name of the disease when they should be using the name of the virus, and some vice versa. Folks understand COVID-19, the disease name, so I guess that's why it's accepted that technically many media reports are incorrect as relay of info is most important?

Perhaps this article that used the virus name is pointing out that these stats are for those that tested positive for the virus test? vs the stats on the disease itself?

Thanks for the explanation!!

Okay, I need to better understand here. The folks who went through their 14 days are now coming down with it? Hmmmmmm. Incubation period issue? Infected at the end? Two strains with two incubation periods? They had disease for a long time and are catching at the very end?

They’re probably all infecting one another.

IMO...this is what happened in Wuhan and why there are low counts.

And now COVID-19 is endemic in the region, @EvergreenHosp in Washington, ground-zero for this disease, will no longer even test you. Assume you have it.

In Seattle, the CDC has determined that Covid19 is now endemic, meaning its regularly found in the region and population. So they have stopped testing and assume you have it. The nasal swab risk transmission to the clinicians giving the test.

I went for a coffee run this morning (my local establishment; not SB) and also a quick jaunt into Shop Rite. I carried a Lysol wipe the entire time. I probably left everything in my wake a bit cleaner.

Total number of cases in Germany jumps to 684

The number of coronavirus patients in Germany jumped to 684, with concern growing at the economic impact of the spreading epidemic on one of the world’s most trade-dependent economies.

Germany’s case total increased by 45, with large clusters in the west and south, where one initial outbreak centred on a car supplier with a unit in Wuhan, China.

The total is more than 10 times larger than it was a week ago.

Pope to live-stream services after cancelling appearances

Pope Francis will live-stream Sunday services and other events online due to Italy’s deadly coronavirus outbreak.

The 83-year-old pontiff, who is suffering from a cold, has cancelled all his regular appearances in public to prevent large gatherings at the Vatican.

He will not address crowds from a window overlooking St Peter’s Square on Sunday as normal and he will not hold his general audience from there on Wednesday.

Despite my fears and the death and misery I have to admit I laughed. No offense meant to anyone who has suffered!

Shoot. And my mom is schedule to go there in May. I mean that’s a lot of cases in a nation the size of New York State.
The Netherlands maybe small to the surface, but with a population of 17.000.000, tenth most populated country in Europe. It's almost as many as is living in Florida.
