I wanted to share a very local report from CT where one of the first COVID19 cases was announced of a 40-50 yo male from Wilton, CT who had traveled from CA. This individual is being treated in Danbury Hospital and is believed to have multiple children in Wilton Public Schools. Wilton Schools remain open with some activities curtailed.

No information is available (why not?) as to testing status of first COVID19 CT patient's family including children who are in school and information about their contact network.

I am sharing this article because I found the reactions from the local people interviewed fascinating given the scope of the global situation and what could be emerging on the East Coast as we speak. By way of background, Wilton is a typical NY suburb (54 miles by car and 1.25 hrs via train), approximately 32.3 miles from hotpot New Rochelle, NY and is located in Fairfield County (near towns such as Norwalk, New Canaan, Darien and Westport).

After State’s First Case, Wilton Residents, Schools Cautious on Coronavirus

Quote from article:

News may have spread about the state’s first case, but people aren’t concerned about the virus doing the same.

“I’m not really worried about it right now,” said Julie Harris.[BBM]

She says she’s a cancer survivor and reached out to health professionals on what she should do. She says others should do the same.

“I had some breast cancer treatment a year ago and so I wondered if I was compromised and the doctor said no.”

Paul Luchansky says he thinks people are overreacting a bit, telling NBC Connecticut how it’s impacting his neighbor’s big day.

“People have canceled coming in for the wedding,” said Luchansky. [BBM]

Wilton Public Schools has announced they’re cutting down on non-essential group gatherings out of precaution. They've canceled all afterschool activities this week.

“Personally I don’t think anything should be canceled,” said Nina Depeugh, whose son goes to Cider Mill. She says events at his school have been canceled through the month of March. [BBM]

"Fifth Grade Fun Night – I’m mad about that,” said Wyatt. “That’s disappointing.”[BBM]

Nina says the cancellations should be the same across the board.

“If it’s important enough that morning and afterschool activities need to be canceled and field trips need to be postponed, then all of it should be canceled,” said Depeugh.

NBC Connecticut reached out to the Wilton Public Schools and did not get a response. [BBM]

On its website, the school details a handwashing routine for pre-K through fifth-grade students for when they enter the school, eat lunch and use the bathroom.

The site also says there will be details later this week about a remote learning if the school should close, and on next week’s after school activities.

Scientists racing to find a coronavirus vaccine will infect volunteers with a strain of the deadly bug – for £3500 (A$6956).

Up to 24 people at a time will be paid to be infected with a less harmful form of COVID-19 at a lab in East London, as part of a global experiment.

The participants will be regularly monitored by doctors in protective gear while in quarantine for 14 days.

Experts hope it will help them develop a vaccine that could be used next winter to protect the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

Testing will begin once Hvivo, the company that runs the quarantine unit at the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in Whitechapel, has secured permission from the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Next patent idea, soap dispenser that plays 20 seconds of a tune so you wash your hands the length of time the song is playing.

They have toothbrushes for kids that play a tune and for adults that vibrate for the specific brushing time so a fun little bottle of soap should be easy!

Things I've noticed around my area … air filters are suddenly out of stock. I reckon folks are worried about the air quality getting pretty bad at some point.

You can't find a disposable glove at any of the major haunts around here, either, but Harbor Freight is a treasure trove for masks, gloves and other handy things. So think outside the box if your local places are out of everything.

My state officials are rather pathetic in their handling. There was a presser yesterday and the three that spoke, all had different things to say. Granted, we don't have any confirmed cases and only a small handful "being watched" but I'm positive it's only a matter of time.

A group of my neighbors (read that as folks in my community, because I'm rural and our neighbors are almost all at least a quarter mile away) booked a cruise last year that departs in a few weeks and they're still going. I think that's nuts, but that's just me.

And finally … we share 11 acres with my parents so I feel like we're safer. That may just be wishful thinking, but I'd rather be wishful, you know? It's almost planting time for our garden and I think I'm going to plant a little extra, just in case.

And one PS … we live in a 987 square foot house … with one bathroom. If one of us gets it, the other is doomed! :p But at least we're massive germaphobes and keep things clean and neither of us licks doorknobs or sprays fluids when we sneeze or cough.

“We don’t know” how many coronavirus tests have been done, says US health secretary

US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar says his department isn’t sure how many tests for the novel coronavirus have been performed in the United States.

“We don't know exactly how many because of hundreds of thousands of our tests have gone out to private labs and hospitals that currently do not report in to CDC.

"We're working with the CDC and those partners to get an IT reporting system up and running hopefully this week where we would be able to get that data to keep track of how many we're testing,” he added.

Azar went on to say: “We think we've got probably 10,000 a day could be getting tested by the end of the week -- 20,000 a day according to a study by AEI that I've heard about. We've got 2.1 million tests available, 1.1 million have shipped. We actually have a surplus at the moment that are awaiting orders to be shipped.

“A private vendor shipped most of those 1.1 million that shipped were from a private vendor selling to their customers, and those entities that used their tests do not have to report back to CDC. But we're trying to set up a reporting system where they would in effect do that,” Azar said.

NEW YORK — Walmart is enacting an emergency leave policy for its 1.4 million hourly U.S. workers that allows them to take time off without penalty if they fear the spread of the new coronavirus.

Walmart also says that hourly workers who work in a store, club, office or distribution center will receive up to two weeks pay if they are required to quarantine by the government or by the retailer.

Workers who have a confirmed case of the virus will also receive two weeks of pay.

The policy covers both Walmart and Sam's Club workers and includes part-time employees.

Does anyone have a definitive source for information on any detrimental link between taking ACE inhibitors (high BP meds ending in "pril") and having COVID-19?

Im real happy to see the NY governor doing as much as he can. He seems to be about the only US governor so far that is treating this with the seriousness that it warrants. He does have the huge NYC to deal with which may explain some of it, but even with that consideration, he is doing so much more than other US states right now and I am happy to see that.

Lets hope more US states begin to ramp up and model some of his actions.

That's true. He also unveiled that state's own line of hand sanitizer made by prisoners to be provided to government agencies, schools, prisons and transit workers.

It even has a name "NYS CLEAN."

This points to a growing outbreak of #COVID19 in the greater Seattle area. If steps are not taken to increase social distancing as recommended by @KCPubHealth and @WADeptHealth, I fully expect cases to keep climbing. 8/12

I have a long-standing appointment for a haircut and pedi this afternoon that I’m keeping. It’s a small salon and stations are far apart. I’m not worried and I don’t want my hardworking hair stylist to lose my money unless and until absolutely necessary. But I will have her cut my hair a little shorter so I can stretch my next appointment to 6 weeks instead of 4 or 5.

I just returned from my very nice mani and pedi. Techs always wear gloves but no masks today. One client talked about how she just returned from Key West and thinks the virus is being unnecessarily hyped. She seemed to know about the outbreak at the nursing home in Washington but not much else. Sounds like she didn't pay much attention to national news while she was in Florida. The other client besides me said nothing, and I asked everyone to stay well when I was leaving. I'm due for a haircut, too, but can wait another week or two.

Enjoy your day of beauty :)

Health experts issued an ominous warning about a coronavirus pandemic 3 months ago. The virus in their simulation killed 65 million people.
Health experts issued an ominous warning about a coronavirus pandemic 3 months ago. The virus in their simulation killed 65 million people.
Eric Toner, a scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, wasn't shocked when news of a mysterious coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, surfaced in early January.

Less than three months earlier, Toner had staged a simulation of a global pandemic involving a coronavirus.

Coronaviruses typically affect the respiratory tract and can lead to illnesses like pneumonia or the common cold. A coronavirus was also responsible for the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome in China, which affected about 8,000 people and killed 774 in the early 2000s.

"I have thought for a long time that the most likely virus that might cause a new pandemic would be a coronavirus," Toner said.

(Only a simulation!)

I knew it was coming:

Coachella will be postponed because of coronavirus concerns, sources say

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival organizers will postpone the event, potentially until October.

The festival, which typically attracts about 100,000 attendees per day, had been set to take place on two weekends: April 10-12 and April 17-19 in Indio, California.
