Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #112

Covid etiquette question. How do (would?) you deal with a service person coming into your house, when (if?) you still mask under riskier situations - work, indoor in some public spaces etc but 98% people don’t. I won’t be asking them to mask. But not sure if I should explain myself “I’m Covid cautious” . I don’t want to offend them or think I’m sick. Though most people don’t seem to worry about it much. My previous experience with service people occurred when I could open windows and keep distance so I wasn’t really concerned. This is for a pet appointment so I suspect there will be closer contact than say the appliance delivery / repair guys lol.

Adding-lots of winter respiratory stuff is going around locally. Rsv, bacterial pneumonia and whooping cough raging.

Thanks !
I would just say “I’m not sick and I’m trying to keep it that way and protect you in case I am.”

If it's before Christmas that would be a good excuse to (fib) and say "Too much going around this time of year and you're trying not to catch anything before Christmas". Either way, I know someone that stayed in another room and ran air purifiers. But, (you likely know this, but just in case)... the worry isn't over as soon as the door closes behind them. Aerosols can hang around in the air for hours depending on the size of them. I wouldn't go waltzing back into the space he was in unmasked for a while. I'd steer clear of it and bring my purifier into that space. But I'm extra cautious. :)

Good luck and do let us know how it turns out. :)

DH and I got our Covid shots yesterday. We thought we'd be getting Pfizer injection because all of our other Covid vaccines were Pfizer. This time, we got Novavax. Neither of us has experienced any side effects, but we went to bed at 9:30 because we were very tired. This may or may not have been related to the Covid shot.

Have you taken the RSV immunization? My internist told me that she’s treated many older adults with RSV.
Yes, I did get the rsv shot at the beginning of December. I had a routine doctor appointment, and the doctor suggested it, so I said ok.

This shot gave me zero side effects, so that was nice. Not even a sore arm!

NIH adds funds to long COVID-19 research, advances work on new clinical trials

The $662 million in funds will be allocated over Fiscal Years 2025-2029 to support the following research areas
  • RECOVER-TLC clinical trials
  • Completion of adult and pediatric observational studies
  • Additional pathobiology studies to examine how long COVID affects different parts of the body which will help to inform clinical trials
  • Preservation and broader access to data and biospecimens and maintaining RECOVER-supported research infrastructure over the next five years

I'm not hearing/reading much about Covid lately, but Norovirus is apparently running rampant across the country.

So many people think Norovirus is only a cruise ship disease but only a small percentage of cases are on cruise ships.

A norovirus infection is characterized by sudden vomiting and diarrhea. Outbreaks are often seen on cruise ships, in congregate living situations like nursing homes and jails, as well.

There are about 2,500 reported norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. each year. Norovirus, which is sometimes called the "cruise ship virus," causes more than 90% of diarrheal disease outbreaks on cruise ships, according to the CDC. However, norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships account for only a small percentage of all reported norovirus outbreaks.

...Because the virus is highly contagious, outbreaks are often reported in community settings like health-care facilities, restaurants, schools, childcare centers and cruise ships, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases said...

Cruise ships tend to get a bad rap regarding Norovirus, but there are many other settings where the highly contagious virus proliferates.

Public health experts are warning of a ‘quad-demic’ this winter. Here’s where flu, COVID, RSV, and norovirus are spreading

Yup. It's really bad in Chicagoland right now. Every day in the local FB groups, ppl are posting their own/their family member's symptoms and asking what they have/why they are still sick/etc. And all are very surprised this is happening to them, even though just days before they posted pictures of themselves in crowded public places without a mask. And they are so surprised when that are coming down with MULTIPLE illnesses over the course of several weeks (whooping cough is also still bad in our area right now).

I know a mask is not the be-all, end-all solution for all those things (esp. norovirus, considering that hand sanitizer doesn't do the job--but when you are out in public it's all you have until you can get to a sink with hot water and soap), but come on people...it's a common sense starter considering that everywhere I go lately I hear people coughing like crazy.

But all these people seem to find it better to have their entire family get horribly sick and spend all of winter break in and out of urgent care, doctor's office, and CVS and complain that their holidays have been ruined THAN PUT ON A MASK IN PUBLIC.

Yes, ranting, I know. But it's just not that impossible to make better choices. And them complaining to me about how uncomfortable/awkward masks are when I gently suggest wearing masks just incenses me. My family and I have been wearing masks nonstop in public for over 4 years now. We wear them with glasses, we wear them when it's hot and humid, we wear them even though some of us have to do funky things with the straps to get a good comfie fit. My son and I have long Covid and have no idea when we will be able to stop wearing them. We wear them for ourselves and for those people who honestly can not wear them due to breathing issues.

I’m staying in to avoid norovirus. I take common sense precautions against all the other illnesses but norovirus is on a different level and for me I’m phobic of it and avoid it like the plague that it is.

I wouldn't be truthful if I didn't acknowledge that I'm more than a little concerned about the prevalence of Norovirus around the country right now. We are going on a cruise at the end of the month, and I am getting a bit anxious about all of the illnesses that are plaguing the country at this time. I managed to stay healthy despite DH having bronchitis and walking pneumonia and hope that I will continue to be well. We will be well-prepared with Imodium, Pepto-Bismol, Tylenol, Mucinex, etc. but hope we won't need any of these remedies while we're on the ship. We'll wear masks on our flights and do our best to avoid crowded venues on the ship. I always have hand sanitizer in my purse but will also wash my hands frequently and avoid using public restrooms onboard. We probably spend more time in our stateroom and on our balcony than most cruise passengers. We never go to the casino where smoking is allowed, and we don't frequent crowded bars. If there's a good party band onboard, we'll sit in a lounge and listen to music, but for the most part, we like to watch movies or read in our stateroom or sit on our balcony and gaze at the sea and sky.

Just in case you weren't aware (I wasn't).
  • Wash hands well with soap and water; hand sanitizer alone does not work well against norovirus.
  • You can use hand sanitizers in addition to hand washing, but hand sanitizer is not a substitute for handwashing, which is best.

Regular hand sanitizer does not work against norovirus. At all. There is a special sanitizer that you used to be able to order from Great Britain that was supposed to work on norovirus. As far as I know, that hand sanitizer and good handwashing are the only things besides bleach to work on it. Not sure about Lysol.

Germstar was the name of it. Now they are saying even that is not proven against noro.

Thank you for saving me the time to research that. lol I was wondering if it was true or not.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... The CDC is saying upcoming illness will likely catch a lot of people by surprise when they get sick because they aren't tracking CDC data like a lot of us are.

this COVID wave, starting later in the year than usual, may be causing a "silent" surge in transmission, experts say.

They're calling it "silent" because the wave follows a long period of unusually low COVID activity this fall, so many people are unaware that COVID levels have risen sharply in recent weeks, the most recent wastewater surveillance data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show.

Despite these signs COVID is on the rise, people may not know their risk of infection is increasing and not test if they only have mild symptoms, which can allow the virus to spread at gatherings, during travel, when returning to work and more.
