So it’s hard to stay positive for me. I’m trying but I am scared.

Your feelings are completely valid. This is the unknown and that is scary. Being scared is okay and it's really hard to be positive in scary times. No judgement. Hugs to you.

This virus could effect our criminal justice system.

If there is a major disruption to trials, defendants could claim that their Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial was violated. JMO

Hell, 70,000 prisoners were released in Iran because they felt leaving them in prison would be a death sentence and cause more spread. So you’re right but man it could be worse.

Personally, I believe that once the testing of sick individuals actually starts being done on a regular basis (here in the US), our numbers will be very similar. Asia testing MANY people. And it's also important to remember that it takes time (weeks) from the time cases are identified in a country to the time there is widespread disease.
And I doubt it because of the transmission of the disease. The U.S. doesn't have the high density of living centers that are abundant in Asia.

Thank you for asking it’s on Saturday. Thank you so much @CeeCeeCat @Lilibet @margarita25

Give your cats @CeeCeeCat and your dog @margarita25 a big hug from me.

I will say a prayer on Saturday morning (if that’s ok with you). I won’t tell you to try not to worry, because that’s impossible, but please know your Mum will be in the very best of hands.
Meanwhile, I am off to deliver those hugs to some snack-starved cats...

The other night I got an emergency alert on my phone. One of those loud ones like they do for Amber Alerts.

I jumped out of bed all foggy thinking it was something to do with CV.

It was a weather alert.

This has consumed me day and night to the point I can’t focus on anything else. Nothing.

No. I can’t. As the key word is “when”. Do you believe that we are immune from whats happening around the world? Are we better prepared to prevent the spread?

I certainly felt so at the beginning of this thread, watching what was happening in China. I said so, too. I felt our nation could cope with this.

I didn’t know that the National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense (the National pandemic response team created in 2014 after the Ebola crisis began) was dissolved in 2018.

I didn’t realize the CDC had rejected test kits offered by the WHO which every other nation has accepted.

I didn’t know that various leaders around our country would confuse the public, minimize the seriousness and be super slow to act to stop the spread.

So now I’m frightened that it’s going to explode like a bomb in the US.

In 2014 we had 11 cases of Ebola in the US. Only two were due to “community spread”. We had only two deaths.

Yes that was a different disease and spreads differently but we aggressively tracked everyone who had contact with someone with the disease and forced them into quarantine until they were cleared.

We didn’t do that here.

So it’s hard to stay positive for me. I’m trying but I am scared.

I do believe we are better prepared to prevent the spread thanks to lessons learned via 9/11. I understand the test kits were rejected because of a belief they were too fallible. In 2014, the Ebola cases didn't spread thanks to the containment initiatives at UNMC and other U.S. initiatives. I'm not about to panic because I have no reason to panic. JMO

Thank you so much @LaborDayRN and @CeeCeeCat you are both so kind. I really appreciate your good wishes and prayers for my parents and I.

I really hope you and your families will be ok and they are all in my prayers too.

IMO I don't think that will hold water if it's only for 2 weeks (other states are saying until the end of March) and when a state of emergency has been declared by the federal government.
I hope everything goes back to normal in two or three weeks. I have my doubts that will happen.

Does a federal state of emergency supersede the US Constitution? I hope not.

Thanks. I realize I’d probably be much more positive if I wasn’t high risk and if my brothers and mother weren’t either.

Also, I love to hike and run. Even if I survived if I had permanent lung damage, what would I do? I don’t think I could live without exercise. I need it for my stress. I need nature and sweat.

Already I get to a certain level of fitness and plateau and can’t go farther due to my asthma. And nowadays when I get a mild cold or severe allergies it’s causing asthma that used be much easier to shake, but is now hanging on.

I can’t imagine getting an illness like this.

Mostly I’m very worried about my human family that depend on me and that I think could not survive happily without me. If I didn’t have loved ones who need my care and support I would still be scared about dying a terrible death in isolation in a sterile place away from family. But I wouldn’t at all be as scared as I am now. I don’t want them to be without me.

Where do you get the number 50 from?

Most news reports I've seen is that it's recommended that groups of 250 people or more should be canceled/avoided.
I’m not OP, but I’m in Santa Clara County and our most recent ordinance is 100 people or less, and our neighboring county (San Mateo County) is 50.

Why the 2 numbers are technically different I have no idea- my county has 91 cases and theirs only 30 something. The two counties are right next to each other as you prob know since you’re in Sacramento (I think you said that, but not positive), so the difference in county rules seems arbitrary. My county has “asked” for groups less than 35, but only forbidding groups over 100. Go figure.

But anyway, that’s where I’ve personally seen the “groups of 50 or less” . Could be other places around the country too.

MOO.

Were they released or executed. Hard to tell the truth when it comes to Iran.

Maybe we should have no groups no matter the size for awhile.

I wish I could sleep it’s 7:47am here and I haven’t slept at all. I’m worried sick and stressed out my mind about this nightmare and my Mum’s surgery.
Praying for you both right now.

Does a federal state of emergency supersede the US Constitution? I hope not.

It can. For example, the Supreme Court has held that people can be compelled to be vaccinated or face fines:

Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 197 U.S. 11 (1905), was a United States Supreme Courtcase in which the Court upheld the authority of states to enforce compulsory vaccination laws. The Court's decision articulated the view that the freedom of the individual must sometimes be subordinated to the common welfare and is subject to the police power of the state.

Jacobson v. Massachusetts - Wikipedia

However, usually defendants waive time for trial in criminal cases. But in new cases they may refuse to knowing it can’t be held and my feeling is cases mat be dismissed or not prosecuted yet in order to not have that dilemma occur of a defendant forcing a quick trial.

But maybe the definition of speedy might be changed for people and/or more bail granted.

what are you talking about, this is how we do our shopping its like the hunger games sometimes we involve kangeroo's as battle companions

These are some interesting times for people studying psychology and sociology. I feel like one person started this toilet paper craze and others followed. Seems like some people are completely irrational and random with what they are grabbing. Toilet paper is cleaned off the shelves yet dried beans and canned goods aren't touched. Am I crazy or are toilets usually next to a shower, no? Most people have washcloths if it got that bad!

SAME. It's 4:11am here and I have to be up for work at 8. I am WIRED. My mom was diagnosed with cancer this week and the surgery to remove half of her lung is scheduled for next week. She is about to be 76 and I'm just... weirdly disassociating yet completely anxiety ridden. Hugs to you and your mom.

That’s so true!
