'Pandemic' scientist says his team has discovered potential cure for COVID-19

"How did you come up with this potential cure?

We took a series of five antibodies from around 2002 that were able to neutralize SARS. We were able to use technology in our laboratories to evolve those antibodies against SARS to adapt them to recognize COVID-19.

We tried with five different antibodies because we weren’t sure which one would work the best. All five worked so we have a pretty powerful tool chest available to us right now to produce a final therapeutic."

Just did a double-take...did he say My Pillow?! I'm glad everyone is stepping up.

I'm glad to see the company CEOs and what each are contributing, it gives me hope.

Having worked boots on the ground in mass disasters, I'm a detail person. I want to know who is doing what and timelines for production/delivery.

MOO... These companies are reconfiguring machinery, sourcing materials and designing new products, trying to save lives. They deserve to be recognized !!! Yes, two minutes of prime time in the Rose Garden is worth millions to these companies but more importantly they will become the elite, those who rose to the challenge. These folks will be a part of history.

I commend each company and every employees that IS stepping up to the plate. I see manufacturing in my little rural community, passionately making masks, headgear and disposable gowns. In just weeks they've had parts hand made for machines and sourced material and drove to pick up.

Moo...but we achieve more with praise and recognition than force.

How do you pronounce Fuqua? Is it how I think it is? :)

at least one of the posts each morning has me totally, unexpectedly cracking up - spitting out precious coffee. Just a weird thing that I'm aware of, over something I wouldn't usually think was even funny. Yesterday was the guy with the magnets up his nose - today it's a punctuation. Alot I'm certain is just my internal need for a moment of diversion from the reality of what we're facing.

In a perfect world everyone (including the CDC, Homeland Security, and any other federal agency with power, plus state and local governments) would have listened to Bill Gates and others who predicted this kind of pandemic and made sure federal, state and local governments and hospitals were building up supplies. I firmly believe this should have happened. They had ample warning if they had listened.

But “an emergency like this” and “times like this” are unprecedented and very few believed a pandemic like this would happen. Even when Wuhan was first on the radar in January, plenty in our government believed it wouldn’t happen here, as did some on these threads. So while I get your frustration, I’m more frustrated on behalf of those on the frontlines who don’t have masks or gloves because of poor planning by higher ups. Even some that were stockpiled have been held up because they are “outdated”! I would rather make do if necessary so that those on the front lines get what they need. And I hope all levels of government and healthcare administrators have learned their lesson!

You were smart to get a small supply March 1 when you visited your Mom. The government would have been very unlikely to confiscate any masks and gloves we had for personal use in order to supply hospitals if they had invoked War Powers. And quite frankly, IMO all of us who live in CA, OR, or WA where wildfires are common ought to have a small supply of N-95 masks and gloves in our go-bags, even in urban areas. Really, that should be true of every go-bag in this country. There will be times, like right now, when we can’t depend on our governments to take care of us. We may be on our own in any disaster and need to be prepared to take care of ourselves and our loved ones for more than a few days.
So I hope we have learned a lesson also.
JMO
There is just no way, to "i told you so" in this situation. Never, in our lifetimes have we had such dynamics. The main thing missing to me is "the master plan" with Federal and State Governments. Listening to the Bill Gates interview with Sanjay Gupta last week, and his TED talk in 2015 .... should bring us to our knees..., my knees are bloody. I listen to it over and over... we are still not listening to what he is saying....

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Thank you. You explained it so eloquently. The way you described your daughter is exactly how my son is and what I’m seeing in him. I’ve raised him alone since he was 2 and we’ve been through quite a bit. His Dad loves him but doesn’t accept who he is so therefore there is no relationship there. We have no family anywhere near us so I’m all he has. Anyway, thank you again for your post. I don’t post much because I’ve always been a math/numbers person and horrible at writing.
Horrible at writing? You moved me so much with these words.... so much.

Kali you need to jump on this (if it applies?):
Apply for Aid | Restaurant Employee Relief Fund
"The Restaurant Employee Relief Fund was created to help restaurant industry employees experiencing hardship in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. Through this Fund, grants will be made to restaurant industry employees who have demonstrated being financially impacted by COVID-19, whether through a decrease in wages or loss of employment. These grants will be made on a first-come first-served basis, subject to availability of funds. 100% of the Fund’s proceeds will go to providing grants to restaurant workers. This Fund is operated by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, whose mission is to attract, empower and advance today’s and tomorrow’s restaurant and foodservice workers."

For me, it was:

Week 1: Eating huge amounts of ice cream and tator tots, drank a bunch of beer, gained weight

Week 2: Loss of appetite -lost weight

Week 3: Loss of appetite - lost weight

Week 4: Better appetite but still minimal - weight stabilized.

I'm going into week three and this is the exact patterned I have followed.

Your county and mine are neck-and-neck @Squinchy. We hit 20 this morning. I imagine most of yours are community spread. Only our first two were travelers as was your first one.

Smoking! I quit many times back in the day. Finally it stuck in 1972 because I made a firm decision to do it (not because I was afraid to go out to get more :)). So it kind of depends on if y0u are quitting until you can get more or if you want to quit permanently. If it’s temporary, chewing and eating help. If you want to do it permanently, I think making a pro and con list for quitting is helpful. I’m sure you’ll come up with more pros than cons. Beyond that, perseverance and prayer help. Hang in there!
And what county are you in Lilibet??? I asked @Squinchy about her county too...because I am trying to get updates on sonoma county. My sis-in-law is in a real small town..and I worry about her all the time...but just wondered 'what the gist" is with those counties north of SF.

CDC Director On Models For The Months To Come: 'This Virus Is Going To Be With Us'

*Important Point from interview: BBM

'This is a very powerful weapon'

First, I'd like to thank all the Americans and all the people in our nation that have taken this to heart and really practice aggressive social distancing. Secondly, for those that are still on the sidelines, I'd like to tell them, now's the time to really embrace this. This is not just a little recommendation on a piece of paper. This is a very powerful weapon.

This virus cannot go from person to person that easily, it needs us to be close. It needs us to be within six feet. If we just distance ourselves, this virus can't sustain itself, and it will go out. I'm reminded about the NBC [motion graphic] and it's now on my Twitter, lining up matches and then lighting the match, and they all light and then you just take out one match and the fire goes down.

So this social distancing that we're pushing...is a powerful weapon, and that will shut this outbreak down sooner than it otherwise would have been shut down. And as next season comes up, it's going to be important that we re-embrace that social distancing.

We are now up to 21 positives in Humboldt county, Ca. The latest is community spread. Now I'm kind of scared. We have enough food for awhile but sadly I'm a smoker. I'm running out and I'm afraid to go out to get more. Any tips for cold turkey quitting smoking overnight?? :)
I wonder if you can get some Nicorette gum online.

  • #655
Yeah, don’t do it now.....lol.....I’m a chain smoker...sigh.....
Just glove up...bandana or mask your nose and mouth and go get enough.
I wish you wouldn’t say that. I’m a smoker trying to quit right now and I encourage others to do so. As I told my friend last week, this disease is going to kill off all the smokers. What better motivation to quit than that?

It's the perfect motivation, IMO. I don't smoke (never have) so it's easy for me to misunderstand the willpower and physical discomfort it has to take in order to do so. One thing I know, from forcing myself to do something I don't want, I am proud of myself in the end.

I wish you much success.

Suspected SARS virus and flu samples found in luggage: FBI report describes China's 'biosecurity risk'

WASHINGTON — In late November 2018, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Detroit Metro Airport stopped a Chinese biologist with three vials labeled “Antibodies” in his luggage.

The biologist told the agents that a colleague in China had asked him to deliver the vials to a researcher at a U.S. institute.

“Inspection of the writing on the vials and the stated recipient led inspection personnel to believe the materials contained within the vials may be viable Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) materials,” says an unclassified FBI tactical intelligence report obtained by Yahoo News.

The FBI concluded that the incident, and two other cases cited in the report, were part of an alarming pattern.

So horrifying. Thanks for posting..i think!

While the US Postal Service fights for its life financially, 2,000 of its workers are in quarantine and dozens have tested positive for the coronavirus

"The US Postal Service is in crisis, with lawmakers warning that plunging mail volumes could shut it down by June without "urgent" financial help — threatening everything from critical medicine deliveries and vote by mail to a third of Amazon orders.

But the crisis is far more than financial. The National Association of Letter Carriers, the union representing USPS city carriers, said 51 USPS employees had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday. On top of that, nearly 2,000 were in quarantine."

"As the number of confirmed positive coronavirus cases have increased throughout the general public, so too have been the number of postal employees who have tested positive," a statement from the union's president, Fredric Rolando, read. "About half of the postal employees are quarantined by order of public health officials and half have chosen to self-quarantine."

The union on Thursday announced the coronavirus-related death of New York City carrier Rakkhon Kim, age 50.

About 150 employees have returned from quarantine, the statement said. "Eligible" workers ordered to quarantine by health officials are being paid administrative leave during the quarantine, while those who choose to quarantine themselves must take sick leave.
