I don't have any stores around here so have to make do. I have some old sunblock shirts that have very tightly woven but lightweight fabric. I wonder if that would be better than cotton/poly that is more loosely woven?

Please try to avoid poly. Or is there some news about poly?

Family and emergency Dr. Janette Nesheiwat suggested that polyester, spandex-like material may retain germs longer than breathable cotton-based fabrics, making it important to wash leggings, underwear and dresses carefully (more on how to do that later!).

Once a day I have to drive about ten miles to drop off a meal to a shut-in and leave it on the doorstep, and I drive on a rural highway, and each night I see an "OPEN" neon sign in an upstairs window of a local psychic. I wonder how she does her work with social distancing order in place.

She’s psychic:D

Is tea towel material similar to flour sack material? Ive bought those at Walmart before for iron on designs. I might still have some up in my stash.
Flour sack material is too loosely woven to be of benefit. A tea towel is heavier. I have a pack that I put in the back of the drawer because liquids roll off of it instead of absorb. HTH

Edited for grammar

The whole medical system will be overwhelmed at least for the next year I believe.
Including dentists, dermatologists, eye doctors, etc. etc. because a lot have closed doors until this passes (my dentist closed until mid April). They can’t risk the staff and Dr.s being exposed.
My RN-onco daughter mentioned to me the other day that people who’ve been newly diagnosed with cancer have been told to wait (if feasible) until after the peak to have the surgery required. I’ve been through breast cancer. I wanted it removed ASAP. I cannot imagine having to wait until this is over to have the tumor removed/surgeries.

Major props to everyone that’s making masks, no matter what the fabric blend is. Masks aren’t just to protect yourself- they are also to protect those around you in case you yourself have the virus.

Riverside County recommends residents cover their faces when leaving home, but not with N95 masks

Riverside County health officials on Tuesday recommended that residents use something to cover their nose and mouth when leaving home to perform necessary errands or go to the doctor, but are telling people not to buy hospital grade masks.

Bandanas and homemade fabric masks were cited as two examples of acceptable items to use as face coverings, according to a news release from Riverside University Health Systems. The advantage of both is they can be washed and worn again.

But that defeats the use of 100% cotton. The reason that polyester blends are not recommended is that...the virus can live there easier. That's my understanding, anyway. Another layer of cotton would be better, I think.

Does washing your clothes prevent the spread of the coronavirus?

Cotton prices doing well, and many people are finding that their t-shirts are blends. I wouldn't use polyester, myself, due to the longer survival rate of CV (or any virus) on it.
I have not read anything about the survival rate on polyester, but only that straight polyester fabric is less breathable. In fact, in the article that rates fabric, a cotton blend shirt rates higher than the 100% cotton at blocking out particles. Cotton blend T-shirt is likely referring to 60% cotton 40% polyester.

At any rate, I work with 100% cotton. If I am uncertain of the content of a fabric, I don’t use it.

Well this is different. All around the country jails are releasing inmates but New Orleans is doing the opposite:

New Orleans Prosecutors Argue the Coronavirus Is a Reason to Keep People in Jail

As of Monday, New Orleans had the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita in any American city. Public defenders have filed motions requesting lower bonds for people who may be especially vulnerable to the virus. Yet prosecutors are vigorously opposing these motions. They have, in fact, drafted boilerplate language to argue that people must stay locked up in jail to protect public health. Here is the passage that appears in all seven motions reviewed by Slate:

Pursuant to [state law], the trial court may consider “the nature and seriousness of the danger to any other person or to the community that would be posed by the defendant’s release” when setting a defendant’s bond. The defendant has failed to show that, if released on bond, he will have a residence to stay in while the city battles the Coronavirus outbreak. Nor has he demonstrated that he will adhere to any curfews and other safety measures set in place by city officials. If the defendant is released on bond during the Coronavirus outbreak and goes into public places, it will pose a threat to the general public by potentially spreading the virus to others and increasing the rate at which others are exposed to the virus.

(Great news for Californians)

CA launches hotline to help seniors stay connected during coronavirus pandemic

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday announced the launch of a new hotline aimed at keeping California seniors connected as residents throughout the state are ordered to stay home to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The phone number, 1-833-544-2374, will provide help and critical services for older Californians, the governor said during his daily briefing on the state’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
