I was wondering because the US case fatality rate isn't the highest by far -- even based on current statistics with limited testing.

For a comparison, let’s look at 9 European countries which together have about 326 million inhabitants, which is nearly the same as the U.S.: Germany, U.K, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, and Austria. As of April 20th, these countries have roughly the same numbers of confirmed cases of coronavirus – 770,000 - as the U.S. The table below shows that the U.S. has a better case fatality rate than six of the countries, and worse than three.
Also, in terms of the other estimate used by the coronavirus task force, deaths per 100,000 people, the U.S. has approximately 11, which is better than Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, U.K., and France.
