I was given so much cherry cough syrup as a kid that to this day (approaching 75) I’m not a fan of cherry flavored anything...even the real fruit. Too bad they didn’t flavor it with chocolate...it would have saved me a lot of calories over the years! :p
The stuff that I got was flavored with cocaine. Really. Now, even with a very bad cough, lots of luck getting a doctor to prescribe it.

Those are all familiar to me. For an earache, my mother would warm oil of cloves and put it in the ear with a dropper, and plug it with a cotton ball for a while. As I recall, the pain relief was instant.

Has anyone ever used onion syrup for cough? Apparently it's a very old home remedy--you cook cut onions with sugar or honey to make the syrup. I wonder if it would work for Covid cough.
Lemon juice, honey, and a teeny bit of water was prescribed when I was pregnant.

Did I see that right that yesterday your % positives on tests were 55%? I've never seen anywhere that high. WHO saying keep below 5%.

Does Iowa ONLY test symptomatics?
Iowa COVID-19 Information There is a graph on here that tells what % were positive on each day. It is kind of hard to read, but IMO Thurs. Oct. 22nd says 5%. IMO-Back in the Spring/Summer when we had our plant outbreakes, they tested everyone from certain plants and there were many that were positive and asymptomatic. Also, IMO now they test everyone before they are admitted to the hospital regardless of what they are being admitted for (heart attack, stroke, etc.). I also know for sure they test people who are getting certain procedures done or surgery regardless if they have symptoms. Also, nursing home residents and workers are also being tested (if someones tests positive and also without a positive test IMO.)

I don't remember where I initially heard it. It might be limited to a massive online group dedicated to it. Basically it's for people who love Aldi and especially all the goodies in the middle aisle. People go in for groceries and come out with tons of things they couldn't help buying from the aisle of shame.

LOL sounds familiar

US nears daily Covid cases record amid warning of 500,000 deaths by February

Has anyone done the math on this? What kind of daily positive rate and daily death rate might we be looking at?

It's 281,716 more deaths, starting on Oct. 24.

128 days until Feb 28 (which is the date of the projection).

2,200 deaths per day.

The projection in that article is actually 511,000.

Naturally, it will come in a curve with a peak - so at the peak, it should be around 4000 deaths per day, with next week seeing us go to at least 1200.

I think there are so many variables in this, that I hope and pray the deaths will be much less.

The positivity rate is hard to predict, as it's hard to find total number of daily tests done in the US...I'm sure it's somewhere.

If only 2% of people die, that's new 14,100,000 people with CoVid between now and Feb 28.

If the cases are distributed over a very wide age range (2-95), perhaps it will be only about 1% of the total cases in which case it would be 28,200,000 people in the US have had Covid by end of February.

Add 8,700,000 to either of those numbers to get a total case rate - it all depends on demographics. Worldwide, death rate is 4% of all tested cases, so if we go with an optimistic 1% death rate, we get ~37,000,000 total cases for a US-wide positive rate of about 10% for the entire period of CoVid.

Since positivity is already 5-10% most places, I'm guessing the 1% death model with 28,000,000 or so new cases is closer to what's going to happen.

Theoretically, 2,800,000 people will need hospitalization in the next 4 months, which is mind-boggling. Not all in the ICU, but still.

Cocaine has been illegal since the 1920’s. Are you sure you don’t mean codeine?

10 Dangerous Drugs Once Marketed as Medicine - BestMedicalDegrees.com

It was rescheduled - but it's still not illegal.

It's not even schedule I (LSD and marijuana are considered worse than cocaine by the FDA).

Cocaine is schedule 2.

Doctors who prescribe Schedule I are supposed to be heavily sanctioned, but state laws and enforcement have put the kabash on that. Doctors doing research on those drugs are supposed to get special permission.

But yeah, Cocaine is in the second tier, can still be prescribed, although doctors who prescribe it need to file special paperwork and had better have a good reason. Good reasons are published in various journals - it still has therapeutic value, according to a few psychiatrists. It's in the same group as oxycontin and fentanyl.

Quoted post deleted.

Just wanted to post an example of what I think is a good example of how leaders should well, lead...

Andrews may not be popular with the masses but he has managed to bring a serious (for Australia) outbreak back to virtually non existent, comparatively.

It has been interesting to watch the daily briefings, there was a while there where he looked physically exhausted and broken but the last week or so he looks better and I’m glad. I wouldn’t want his job for all the tea in China...

Also shows the staying apart keeps us together motto...

Thanks. I wasn’t aware that cocaine is a schedule 2. At the risk of being totally OT, my friend google still doesn’t find it ever being used in cough syrup, which is why I thought perhaps auto-correct changed the OP’s word from codeine to cocaine. I’ve had plenty of cough syrup with codeine. But I will take her word for it that it was cocaine. :)

Vaccine testing got the go-ahead on Friday to restart in the US.

AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson get go-ahead from Food and Drug Administration after pausing studies when volunteers became ill.

Testing of AstraZeneca’s vaccine candidate had been halted since early September, while Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine study was paused at the beginning of last week. Each company had a study volunteer develop a serious health issue, requiring a review of safety data.

AstraZeneca’s study involves 30,000 people in the US with some getting the vaccine and others a dummy shot.
Johnson & Johnson said it was preparing to resume recruitment soon for its US vaccine study.

How have Melburnians been amusing themselves during their long lockdown?
This man has delighted in the loads of people who have observing and counting birds in the city.
(We have some amazingly beautiful birds here in Oz.)

By the end of lockdown I had managed to see 75 species in my 5km zone.
Social media was ablaze with Melburnians taking note of the birds outside their window.
People who would never have considered themselves birdwatchers before the pandemic were seeing their city afresh through the prism of birds.

This week people have been looking in unprecedented numbers and submitting what they see to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, BirdLife Australia’s annual snapshot of the health of the populations of birds that we share our daily lives with.

I wondered how many birds I could count in my Melbourne backyard and asked others to do the same | Sean Dooley

Could you boil water in a pot on the stove?
Unfortunately not everyone has a stove to boil water on. I've seen lots of city bedsits/"studio apartments" that only have a shelf with an electric kettle, a toaster, a microwave and a mini fridge as their "kitchen". Kettle goes on the blink during lockdown = no tea, and tea is pretty much essential for good mental health in the traditional tea-drinking countries!

ETA: And yes we consider microwaving water to make tea an abomination. Tastes absolutely dreadful and ruins the tea!

Puerto Rico .... Médecins Sans Frontières has been there for the past four months, shoring up healthcare services and reaching the disadvantaged - and is now handing their medical services over to a newly formed organisation called Puerto Rico Salud, to continue providing vital care.

"The pandemic has turned into a disaster worse than Hurricane Maria.
We understand that public health in our country is not the best.
There are a lot of pitfalls.
There is a lot of beaurocracy."
"A lot of people think that as a place that is part of the United States, we have access to doctors. But in reality, health care in Puerto Rico in low resource areas is quite limited."
"There are many people who may have not seen a doctor in years."

Salem's stricter restrictions begin Friday for start of 'Halloween Jr.' weekend
Plans include the early closure of parking garages, limited train service and early closure of area businesses.
Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll and Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday discussed the plans for Halloween weekend and the preceding weekend, which the city calls "Halloween Junior."
As she has done for several weeks weeks, Driscoll has warned potential visitors: “This is not the year to come to Salem.”
The city had already canceled all Halloween festivities, including music, beer gardens and the usual fireworks show.

Even so, tourists like Jeanne Stewart and Michelle Spronk were not deterred.
“I’m fine. I’ve been to the apple orchard today. Around a lot of people, I don’t have any problems. I feel perfectly safe," Stewart said. "As long as I have my mask on, I feel good. And others keep their masks on.”
Spronk brought her three kids from New York and is happy she made the trip.
“It does seem safe. I think it’s great here," she said. "We saw all the signs that say ‘don’t come, it's shut down,' but it’s such a cute little town. I’m glad that we did come.”
