Many comments from Mitt Romney on pandemic: “Unless you take this very, very seriously and communicate that this is not a political matter, this not a matter of liberty, this is a matter of safety and public health, and we have people who are very, very sick, many people in the hospital , we have people who have died, and are dying, this is unacceptable. We needed to have a far clearer message from the beginning.” / Covid Relief Bill /

Gov. Ron DeSantis mocks lockdowns, mask mandates as coronavirus cases spread
11/30/2020

“The governor went to the school in Kissimmee to calm parents’ fears that he, like governors in other states, might close schools. Scoffing at New York officials who ordered schools to close in areas when the positivity rate exceeded 3%, he insisted that won’t happen in Florida.

“It’s literally a metric that was pulled out of somebody’s hat,” he said of New York’s threshold.

He also dismissed recommendations by the White House Coronavirus Task Force, which had advised against reopening schools in Florida.

“We don’t know,” he said of the task force recommendation. “Well, we did know. We did know schools were safe.”

Adirim said much has been learned about the pandemic since it began in March. Now, she said, most public health experts agree that schools can reopen safely if social distancing rules are followed.

DeSantis, however, said such restrictions were unnecessary. As he has for months, he talked about a study in Iceland that found no evidence that school children transmitted the virus to their teachers.“

From Oregon government departments:

Taking care during difficult times

Winter can be difficult even in the best of times, but this year people in Oregon might find the season even more troubling. Being gentle with yourself and adjusting your expectations can help during times of stress and anxiety. Setting small actionable steps can be helpful when coping with stress and anxiety.

Here are some ideas:
  • Make a list of the top three things that you want to get done each day.
  • Find time to practice deep breathing.
  • Make a list of things that you feel grateful for.
  • Decide to do something physical. Even a short walk around the block or doing some stretches can be helpful.
  • Help others while you help yourself: check in with friends and neighbors to offer support, especially to those who might be struggling more during this time.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has more information on Coping with Stress during Infectious Disease Outbreaks.

It’s okay to ask for help. COVID-19 has changed our lives, and it can feel difficult for anyone. There’s support for you and the people you love. Local mental and emotional health resources for support can be found at Safe + Strong or you can call the Safe + Strong Helpline at 1-800-923-HELP (4357). The line offers free, 24-7 emotional support and resource referral to anyone who needs it – not only those experiencing a mental health crisis. (800-923-HELP).

Oregon Coronavirus Update

I like that bulleted list of things to do to cope with stress and anxiety. I'm trying to do some of them. :)

Haven't been online much today but has this heartbreaking video out of Sherman Oaks, CA been posted? Young woman is losing her government-shuttered restaurant while Hollywood/TV productions set up dining just feet away from her outdoor patio.

Sherman Oaks restaurant owner shares her frustration over LA County dining ban in emotional video

"Everything I own is being taken away from me and they set up a movie company right next to my outdoor patio," Marsden says in the video.

"They have not given us money and they have shut us down. We cannot survive. My staff cannot survive," she also says.

Marsden has owned the restaurant for 10 years. She says she spent around $80,000 setting up an outdoor dining area and making changes to meet L.A. County's health requirements, but she's run out of loan money and can't afford to offer takeout, so for now, she's closing.

Marsden says she went to the restaurant to pay her staff and was in shock when she saw the production tents."

Mods, please delete if duplicate post! Thank you!

Seeing all the comments under the various videos on YT is quite discouraging: there are still many comments that this is all a hoax, it’s just the flu, the Governors are the enemy, etc. It’s unbelievable and mind boggling how so many people still flat out refuse to accept the facts in front of them.

Wow! This is a hardcore stay-at-home order! It will last three weeks, which takes it up to Christmas and then the ICU capacity and transmission rates will be projected four weeks out see if the order can be lifted. The area is from San Diego county (where my daughter lives) north to San Louis Obispo county. If it’s enforced and everyone cooperates it should make a difference. I’m not so sure how this will work for Christmas. People will still gather privately I imagine as it will probably be on the honor system.

How will this impact you personally @pocketaccent and others in SoCal?

More from the link...I wonder how it will be enforced:

Additionally, all non-essential travel is "temporarily restricted statewide," regardless of what zone you live in. Hotels and motels are now restricted to only guests traveling for an "essential" reason.
SoCal ICU capacity drops below 15%, triggering stay-at-home order
I hope this stay at home order makes a notable difference. Really it is the last resort we've left to hopefully bend the curve (no longer a curve, it's a straight line northward).

We have been living like the first lockdown had never been lifted, so the second one is just continuance of the same ole. All groceries are delivered except for a couple of times we really had to go to asian markets for a few must-have ingredients that we ran out. Instacart now delivers from Mitsuwa (Japanese market), thank goodness. Yay for Takoyakis - the most delicious and craved food ever since the lockdown!

On a somewhat comical note (not really), I just cut the CRAP out of myself, to the point I was afraid I may need stitches, but I was able to control the bleeding by applying pressure, not before gushing blood all over the place...

This is can be described as an injury one would only get during a pandemic and being locked down: I’m very unhappy to be missing my regular teeth cleanings, so I ordered one of those sharp metal scraper tools they use at the dentist’s office to clean your teeth under the gum line - well I just fish hooked myself in the mouth/lip. Seriously. Just like a fish.

Additionally, I have another injury which thankfully has started to heal up, with a lot of care and angst, but really this is something that I needed to be seen for.

My point is, many people out there I am sure are not seeking medical attention when they may need to. There will be residual effects of this.

So, yeah, don’t try that home with the dental fish hook, or if you do, be very very careful.
Have you heard of Sulcabrush? My dentist, years ago, recommended and gave me one to try at home. It works so well to keep your gum line clean and healthy so your cleaning appointments are so much shorter. I use it after every meal (whenever possible). I highly recommend to everyone especially at this moment in time.

The Oregon Medical Board issued an emergency suspension after finding that Steven LaTulippe "engaged in unprofessional conduct or dishonorable conduct."

Oregon doctor's license revoked over refusal to wear mask during pandemic
Oregon doctor’s license revoked over refusal to wear mask during pandemic

Well, that’s the best news I’ve heard in awhile! The Oregon Medical Board came through. This “doctor’s” behavior was reprehensible. I’m so glad he had a big enough ego to want to speak at the “Stop the Steal” rally. Otherwise his unprofessional conduct might have gone unnoticed.

Thank you for posting this. I wanna come back to this after a little rest and research. Let me leave you with the phrase - moral turpitude.

I read the below linked article. I wasn’t sure where to put this. I decided the COVID thread needed a good old fashioned booster shot of happiness and smiles. Roll up your sleeve and drop your shorts cause here it comes. Just what the doctor ordered. (I’m still working on number five...)
11 Things Incurably Happy People Don't Care About

  1. They don’t care about pursuing happiness as a life goal. Strange as it sounds, researchers have found that the very pursuit of happiness drives away happiness.
  2. They don't care who is to blame. Scientists have found, for example, that people who routinely assign blame to others—even when it’s merited—suffer numerous, stress-related illnesses. Indeed, recent work has even begun to overturn older concerns about ‘self-blame’. However, however, recent evidence from brain scientists has challenged this view.
  3. They don't care about losing things to change. The enemy of change is our inability to let things go. Indeed, some brain scientists at Yale have found that the stronger our attachment to possessions, the more stressed we become about losing them to change.
  4. They don’t care about missing out. The fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a popular phenomenon of discussion, especially in regards to teens. Moreover, there are studies which show FOMO can actually fuel happiness if it motivates teens to make more social connections.
  5. They don't waste time on conspiracies. Few things incite stress more than conspiracy theories. In a review of numerous studies on the connection, for example, scientists show that not only does a belief in conspiracy theories create stress, stress also makes people more likely to believe in conspiracies.
  6. They don't hold grudges. Research by the Mayo Clinic has found that refusing to hold a grudge (i.e., forgiving) has a long list of measurable benefits, including: healthier relationships, improved mental health, less anxiety, stress and hostility, lower blood pressure, fewer symptoms of depression, a stronger immune system, improved heart health, improved self-esteem.
  7. They don’t envy others. In one fascinating study, researchers showed that people who envy others become more stingy.
  8. They don't worry about being seen as ignorant. In an important study, behavioral scientists found that women who worried about being seen as ignorant work much harder than men to prove observers wrong.
  9. They don't worry about the future. Behavioral studies since the pandemic have found a wave of mental and physical illnesses have been directly connected to worries about the future. Indeed, other studies have shown that people with anxiety disorders worry largely because they anticipate future worries.
  10. They don't worry about the ill will of others. To be clear, this does not mean they ignore situations where they caused others harm. Indeed, researchers have found that when we cause others harm, but ignore it, our subconscious eat away at us—making us unhappy.
  11. Becoming famous, wealthy or remaining beautiful. Again, using a combination of the above coping mechanisms (e.g., not seeking happiness as a goal, not worrying about change, lack of concern about others’s evaluations) lead happy people to ignore notoriety as a way of pursuing happiness. Not worrying about change, they recognize change in themselves, for example—whether in wealth or physical terms.

I live near L.A. County. I feel your pain. God forbid that any of us get in an accident of any kind (even a broken ankle) or otherwise need to go to an ER. That's why I am urging everyone to stay home. And I mean every non-essential errand must be stopped. Do not go to the grocery store. By now, we've all had the chance to stock up on rice, beans, frozen food, canned food. Now is the time to use it and just STAY HOME.

Your family probably has no where to go if they get sick (my family too). Let's worry about future hopes and dreams later. If the vaccine is available, take it. That will restore is to our lives (there's never any guarantee of a "wonderful life" but if we can't dream about it, life pretty much sucks).

Keep in mind that certain occupations are much more likely to get COVID (but that almost anyone you know could have had contact with someone in a high risk occupations). I live in fear and dread for my adult kids (although I understand they probably won't DIE from COVID - I worry about all the other things; I've watched too many people have longterm consequences from dysentery or flu or mumps or chicken pox etc to be comfortable with this new and poorly understood virus).

Get a good primary care physician (harder than it sounds - ours is not responding to a routine request for Rx refills, no idea why).

Anyway, you're not alone, you're not neurotic, you're not over-reacting. Fauci and others have been warning for months - now, here we are (and it's global).
I got chest pains at work today and basically hid until they went away. All I could think was I can't be going to a hospital now. (It went away. It's probably related to my autoimmune disease.)

It would appear Colorado is doing really well compared to the rest of the country. New cases aren’t going up as much as expected and number of daily COVID deaths have declined significantly. It’s shown clearly on Colorado State’s official COVID website:

Tableau Public

Yep, we need to be still be careful of course but things are quite hunky dory here in CO.
In each of the last three days daily deaths have been less than 15, compared to the past couple of weeks when we averaged about 40/day. Maybe we can feel a bit smug knowing we have our act together compared to neighboring states.

That is, as long as we don’t search further for state stats. Because a quick look at NYT’s daily report shows CO 14 day death rate has increased 79%, with record deaths recorded on each of the last three days. NYT shows we topped 100 deaths for the first time since April, compared to less than 15 on the state’s website.

Colorado Coronavirus Map and Case Count

Which trend most accurately reflects CO reality? Unfortunately I’m inclined to believe the NYT numbers, as they are more in line with other state’s trends. Including States that have better mask and social distancing compliance. Plus the NYTs has no skin in Colorado’s game. Unlike State politicians that are doing everything they can to avoid controversy. When we surpassed the State’s preset emergency action thresholds, instead of issuing stay at home orders they increased the threshold. So parents don’t get mad, state HS football championships will proceed as scheduled (with fan attendance), even though they’re being held in CO’s hardest hit COVID county. Health clubs, salons and churches remain open. To appease business owners and dining enthusiasts the State is creating a program to let restaurants in COVID’s hardest hit counties resume in door dining.

Am I over-reacting? I want to scream and cry. Is it any wonder so many Coloradans think masks don’t matter and COVID is just the flu.

To comprehend the US total infection number from a different perspective...

Total population:
Australia - 25,499,884
Sweden - 10,099,265
Swiss - 8,654,622
Denmark - 5,792,202
New Zealand - 4,822,233

US Total infections - 14,772,535

United States Coronavirus: 14,772,535 Cases and 285,550 Deaths - Worldometer

Population by Country (2020) - Worldometer

total US population (2019) 328,200,000
the US is a big country.... some of our states are bigger than euro countries....

My use of birth defects/vaccines was intended only as only as an illustrative example. You’re right, by reading one person’s unsubstantiated idea the reader wouldn’t have enough info to make a decision but it might raise the question so they would be on the lookout for other information to learn the facts. And also to your point, who would take anything as a fact because one of one person’s unsubstantiated hypothesis? Almost no-one, so why does facebook need to step in to protect us from ourselves.

Another extreme example for illustrative purposes: Say the FB powers that be believe that Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” is bunk and the work of the Devil. An idea that encourages people to denounce our creator putting souls at risk? So they block any mention of Darwin’s theory to protect people from Satan thus saving their souls. There are a bunch of people who believe just that. Hopefully one of those people aren’t in charge of FB’s delete button, but what if they were?

Or what if the keeper knows something may be true but if word got out it would jeopardize a political or religious movement they believe in with all their soul. Might they delete that content for what they think were righteous reasons? Again an extreme and disturbing example, a Hitler fanatic deleting posts suggesting a government facility might actually be a concentration camp?

Obviously I don’t think anyone at FB is a Hitler proponent—it’s just an example. But what guarantee do we have that the person/people who are in charge of content screening believe something we might take issue with? Or believe they are doing the right thing by squashing facts for the greater good? While odds may be low, there IS no guarantee and for that reason I don’t want anyone controlling what content I and everyone else gets to see.

Facebook gets sued and investigated by Congress (!) routinely now for censoring content and for not censoring content. All the new millennial companies: Facebook. Uber, Lift, Google, etc., reinvented the world- no more newspaper journalism, no more taxi medallions, etc. etc. but when you reinvent the world and toss out all the traditions, guess what happens?

Those are really interesting examples and points. In the US, we have freedom of the press/freedom of speech and naturally, that means we have publications all across the political/ideological spectrum.

Editors of publications have the right to decide what to publish. If FB did take a stand against science/Darwin, I would stop using it. I've come really close to stopping over their lax attitude on vaccines, and many of my friends deactivated their accounts - most are now back, now that FB is trying to suppress the worst of it.

I don't want anyone controlling content (beyond the content provider) but I am well aware that the content providers themselves control whatever they want to control. Right now, there are two Youtube channels that are at the level of 4chan and 8chan and we all know what happened to those places. It's a really interesting topic for WS (legal matters involving content providers), would be a great topic for the chat area or the "news that should be in the news" threads.
That’s a great idea for a new thread and can tie in nicely w/a discussion regarding social media’s responsibility to victims. I’ve just realized I’ve talked out of both sides of my mouth. Damn them, they ought to be obligated to delete Shannan/Rzucek family bashing. But they darn well better not delete anything else. It’s complicated with ramifications either way.

I want to say I appreciate those who responded that FB is just one news source and they have a right to determine what goes on their platform. I have many friends who rely on FB for everything and I may be overstating FB’s importance in my own mind.

For pondering: At some point should dominating SM platforms have “equal time” requirements like TV networks do? And if so, what topics would/should be included?
