Health officials to give update at 7 p.m. on 2 possible coronavirus cases at Miami University
Updated: 02/02/20 05:03 pm EST

''Two students at Miami University in Butler County are under investigation as possibly having the coronavirus.

In an update on Sunday, the Ohio Department of Health said officials will hold an update on the potential cases at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Butler County Health Department, north of Cincinnati, reported the cases. The two Miami students are being isolated at home and treated for their symptoms, which are said to be minor.

"They had traveled from China recently and come back to the United States," said Hurst. "One of them started to have symptoms yesterday morning, appropriately went to a health care provider who had concerns with the travel history and the symptoms, and then had the individual begin to isolate and then obtain the appropriate specimens."
''The press conference on the potential cases will be streamed live on 10TV.com and on 10TV's Facebook page.''

Test results negative for Miami University students suspected of having coronavirus
Updated February 3 at 12:10 AMrbbm.

''BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (FOX19) - State and local health officials have announced two Miami University students tested negative for coronavirus.

The students had recently traveled to China and presented last week with symptoms considered similar enough to those produced by the virus to isolate them and order the tests.

With the negative results, Dr. Amy Acton, Director of the Ohio Department of Health, declared the state free of both confirmed cases of coronavirus and also cases under investigation.

Acton said scientific understanding of the virus is “evolving" and that the public can expect regular updates.''

Sorry if this is a duplicate....but I just heard about these new cases in USA:

"Three more people in California, including a husband and a wife, have reportedly tested positive for coronavirus — bringing the total number of US cases to 11, officials announced Sunday.

The husband and wife, both 57, are from San Benito County and the man recently traveled to Wuhan, China, where the deadly virus originated, according to NBC Bay Area.

The wife did not go to China, indicating the virus was transmitted to her by her husband, the report said."

Wonder why they didn't report these suspected cases or if there are more suspected cases? Ohio has had a poor Dept of Health for the last couple decades. For a long time the department head wasn't even a doctor.

I'm guessing there are more suspected cases in OH they're not reporting.

ETA Looks like the latest Dr. Acton doesn't have a real medical degree per se. Her degree isn't from a true medical school. Never heard of this place. It only has 150 students.

Long-term trend of China's stock market remains unchanged with limited impact from epidemic outbreak

"BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's securities regulator said the novel coronavirus outbreak has limited impact on China's stock market and the long-term trend of the market remains unchanged.

The opening of stock market trading on Feb. 3 is showing China's respect for market rules and its determination to overcome difficulties, sources with the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said in an interview with Xinhua.

The CSRC pledged to stay vigilant to any anomalies on the A-shares market and prepare hedging tools to buffer potential impact.

A series of measures currently under government deliberation to recover production and keep the economy stable will help improve market expectations, noted the CSRC.

Night trading of futures will be suspended starting Monday until further notice, said the CSRC."

Something. IS REALLY WRONG in CHINA.
We have tens of millions on lockdown and radio silence.
I hope I'm completely wrong.
But. I don't think so.
I think major food shortages and people really starting to panic.

It is NOT business as usual in China. Just think about it. My opinion.

Have been off WS most of the day (poor 49ers :(), but I’m trying to catch up on the CV. I guess the Super Bowl is taking top headlines because I’m not finding many details for the latest CV news.

So am I understanding this correctly- there are now 5 cases in California? 2 near Los Angeles, the 1 guy from Santa Clara County from 2 days ago, and now THREE more: a husband and wife in San Benito and a woman in San Francisco? I can’t find consistent reporting at all on the new California cases...

  • #449
I’ve just answered my own question- yes, there were THREE new cases of CV confirmed in the SF Bay Area on Sunday. So 4 total.

Coronavirus: 11th US case of virus from China confirmed in California

The 3 new cases were right after each other so the news just isn’t catching up. And the locals here very focused on the Super Bowl of course.

There was another presser about it but I think it was during the game- so basically no one saw it

I’ve read some of her quotes and it was essentially a ver batum from the one on Friday.

The Qantas flight carrying more than 200 Australian citizens and residents from the coronavirus struck city of Wuhan has landed in Western Australia.

The flight, with 243 Australian citizens and permanent residents, touched down just after 4pm local time into the RAAF Base in Learmonth.

The evacuees — of which 89 are kids — will now have their health checked at the defence base before being ferried to Christmas Island to be quarantined for 14 days.

Wuhan Coronavirus Looks Increasingly Like a Pandemic, Experts Say
Feb. 2, 2020
Updated 8:07 p.m. ET

“The Wuhan coronavirus spreading from China is now likely to become a pandemic that circles the globe, according to many of the world’s leading infectious disease experts.

The prospect is daunting. A pandemic — an ongoing epidemic on two or more continents — may well have global consequences, despite the extraordinary travel restrictions and quarantines now imposed by China and other countries, including the United States.

Scientists do not yet know how lethal the new coronavirus is, however, so there is uncertainty about how much damage a pandemic might cause. But there is growing consensus that the pathogen is readily transmitted between humans.

It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

“But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know.”

In the last three weeks, the number of lab-confirmed cases has soared from about 50 in China to more than 17,000 in at least 23 countries; there have been more than 360 deaths.

But various epidemiological models estimate that the real number of cases is 100,000 or even more. While that expansion is not as rapid as that of flu or measles, it is an enormous leap beyond what virologists saw when SARS and MERS emerged.“

“The biggest uncertainty now, experts said, is how many people around the world will die. SARS killed about 10 percent of those who got it, and MERS now kills about one in

Coronavirus in New York: 2 More Possible Cases in City Are Identified

Dang my copy and paste just went out on my phone boo

And thank you @dotr for posting the Israel article :)

Welcome to the discussion @momrids6 :)

What you need to know about the Wuhan coronavirus

"According to the 2010 study "Effects of Air Temperature and Relative Humidity on Coronavirus Survival and Surfaces," by Lisa M. Casanova, et al., air temperature and relative humidity both impact the survival of other coronavirus strains on stainless steel.

The study found that the infectious virus could survive longer at lower temperatures and inactivation, or the point where the virus can no longer affect people, occurred more rapidly around room temperatures or warmer environments. In the lower temperatures, the virus could survive on a stainless steel surface from 5 to 28 days at all humidity levels. It took longer for inactivation to occur with a low relative humidity, or a drier environment. In short, the coronaviruses typically survive longer and stay active longer at lower temperatures in a dry environment."

SO.....

My understanding of where we’re at based on information from the two posts referenced above....

The current general consensus of the scientific community is that the Wuhan Coronavirus appears to be VERY CONTAGIOUS and will almost certainly turn into a pandemic.

They also have no idea, as of yet, just how deadly this strain is, but the two coronaviruses they are using for comparison have a mortality rate of approximately 10% & 33% respectively.

With that being said, (and staying within my chosen role of being one of the melodramatic pessimists on this thread...) the WORST CASE SCENARIO (based on known reported data combined with assumptions of similar coronaviruses) is that this virus is highly transmissible and has a very high probability of turning into a worldwide pandemic with a possible top end mortality rate of approximately 33%.

BEST CASE SCENARIO
same as above, but with a mortality rate below 3%.

Either way, without a vaccine or a solid treatment plan with a high success rate of recovery - it appears as though humanity may be facing a very devastating event !!
Add that to the fact that recent reports have indicated this virus most likely has a long incubation period, can be transferred while being asymptomatic, can survive for 5 - 28 days on objects, and can apparently re-infect individuals that have already recovered from it...

I believe we’re in for a very long and very bumpy ride with no apparent end currently in sight.

Our one saving grace may lie with the drug treatment that was just administered to an infected patient in the Philippines. The end result of that treatment appears to be remission and full recovery.

Let’s all hope that those same results can be duplicated repeatedly !!

British coronavirus evacuee "taken ill"

It is believed they fell unwell on the second evacuation flight out of the Chinese city of Wuhan last night.
The person was one of 11 Brits on the flight to RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire.
The patient has been transferred to a separate hospital for tests, according to reports today.

Only 10 passengers arrived at Arrowe Park, as the ill patient has been isolated at another facility.
None of the other 10 patients have shown any symptoms, but as a precautionary measure the 10 new guests were allocated rooms in a separate area of the facility, isolated from those already here.

British coronavirus evacuee is rushed to hospital after being 'taken ill' in UK

ETA - they must have been taken to London

from the article

It is not clear at this stage which hospital they have been taken to, but only four are specially equipped to receive people with contagious illnesses such as coronavirus - two in London, one in Liverpool and one in Newcastle.

Here's the problem with knowing this. We have a rule about only MSM sources here. Does anyone here think we can trust the MSM out of China?? There is loads of information coming out of China but it's not MSM. I have a Chinese American friend who was in China during the SARS epidemic and has family and friends still there now. I trust her take on what's in the media and what's going on. And as that Washington Post article above documented....they lie, lie, lie.

Here is an MSM article this friend shared a few days ago. Why would China be forcing healthy citizens elsewhere to return to the center of the epidemic? Her opinion was it was to control them talking. There are serious consequences in China if you do not cooperate and do not tow the line.

The US has begun implementing new rules around travel from China as the coronavirus death toll creeps higher -- rules that include re-routing Americans flying into the country to specific airports for screening.

For Americans who traveled there in the past 14 days, there are a total of 11 designated airports -- including John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport -- where travelers can enter the US.
Those airports have more resources to conduct enhanced screening procedures.

If passengers are screened and show no symptoms they will be re-booked to their final destination and asked to "self-quarantine" inside their home.

US enforces coronavirus travel restrictions. China says it's an overreaction

Based on the new restrictions that went into effect Sunday evening, Americans flying into the US who have been in China's Hubei Province in the past 14 days may be subject to up to two weeks of mandatory quarantine.

US citizens who have been in other parts of mainland China in the past 14 days will undergo screening at the designated airports and up to two weeks of monitored self-quarantine.

To help expedite that process, Customs and Border Patrol and air carriers will identify passengers who fall under the restrictions before their scheduled flights.

The new rules also mean foreign nationals who were recently in China will be temporarily denied entry into the US.

Maldives to deny entry to passengers arriving from mainland China

The Maldivian government has announced a series of new precautionary measures against the Wuhan coronavirus that include denying entry for passengers arriving from mainland China.

Airlines and aircraft operating flights to the Maldives shall suspend the carriage of passengers originating or transiting through mainland China. The new measure took effect today and will be enforced until further notice.

In 2019, Chinese tourists accounted for 16.7% of all tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

  • After city hospitals were overwhelmed by patients who sought coronavirus tests, local authorities this week announced hospitals would only give tests to those who showed severe symptoms and obtained a referral from smaller neighborhood clinics. (e.d. should we expect to see less of an increase since they aren't testing all folks now?)
  • Some patients died in waiting areas before spots open up, said Chen Qiushi, a well-known Chinese video blogger who has been roaming and filming inside Wuhan’s hospitals. (e.d. if you google his name, you can follow him and his youtubes etc, they are good, I'm following them but I don't think I can post them here due to TOS) ETA-If you do watch his you tubes, go into settings and turn on subtitles as he speaks Chinese
...so much more at the link

After reading this post over the weekend I watched Chen Qiushi's youtube video(s) and all I can say is wow.
