Since there is not a thread for the court cases to keep Trump off the ballot, I'll put the reminder here that the case in Colorado starts today, Oct 30.
The trial is streaming live on youtube. As I type this, they are on mid-morning break (12:15pm eastern time, 10:15am Colorado time)

Regarding the 14th Amendment case in Colorado that started today, 10/30/23:

"Colorado Judge Sarah Wallace is overseeing the bench trial, meaning she will be the sole decider of the case’s outcome, not a jury. The trial is expected to address nine topics, Wallace said in court filings, including the meaning of 'engaged' and 'insurrection' in the 14th Amendment and whether Trump’s conduct leading up to the riot qualifies."

"Trump faces similar lawsuits in Michigan and Minnesota."

14th Amendment lawsuit updates:

Yesterday's trial in Colorado (which is a bench trial with no jury, just the judge)
  • "testimony began with details about the Jan. 6 assault that was intended to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s election win"
  • "Lawyers representing six Republican and unaffiliated Colorado voters argued that Trump’s violent rhetoric preceding the attack makes him culpable, and barred from the presidency again under that clause prohibiting anyone who swore an oath to the constitution and then 'engaged in insurrection' against it from holding office."
Today in Colorado (10/31/23)
  • "an expert in right-wing violence"
  • "an expert on Section Three of the 14th Amendment, which has only been used a handful of times since it was adopted in 1868."

Similar lawsuit trial starts Thursday in Minnesota.

But just 75 minutes after Chutkan gave notice that the order had been reinstated, Trump appeared to violate it by attacking his former attorney general and a potential witness, William P. Barr.

"I called Bill Barr Dumb, Weak, Slow Moving, Lethargic, Gutless, and Lazy, a RINO WHO COULDN'T DO THE JOB," Trump said in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

"His verbal skills are limited," Barr said of the former president during an event at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics earlier in the week.

"If you get him away from 'very, very, very' ... you know, the adjectives ... they're unfamiliar to him and they sort of spill out, and he goes too far," Barr said. "He's not very disciplined when it comes to what he says."

Referencing the attack, Trump added: "So now this Moron says about me, to get even, 'his verbal skills are limited.' Well, that's one I haven't heard before. Tell that to the biggest political crowds in the history of politics, by far. Bill Barr is a LOSER!"

Truer words were never spoken Mr. Barr. :D

Attracting a sizable crowd does not indicate a rich vocabulary. The circus and professional wrestling attract crowds too.

I do think ALL CAPS negatively correlates to both vocabulary and self-discipline. imo...I mean IMO.

Jury selection in Trump’s D.C. criminal trial set to start Feb. 9

Judge Chutkan has also ordered that ... "The parties must ensure that anyone permitted access to sensitive juror information understands that he cannot publicly disclose the information, and no party may provide jurors’ identifying information to any other entity (e.g., the defendant’s campaign) that is not part of the defense team or Government team assisting with jury selection.
No party may disclose, either in open court or outside of court, prospective jurors’names or any identifying information."

14th Amendment case in Minnesota update:

"Efforts to keep former President Trump off the ballot under the 14th Amendment reached the Minnesota Supreme Court on Thursday, with several justices during oral arguments appearing wary that they should be the ones to determine Trump’s eligibility."

Sounds like they want it decided by U.S. Supreme Court and not in their state court.

Sounds like they want it decided by U.S. Supreme Court and not in their state court.

I think they want to punt it because they don't want to give the impression their decision will perceived as political by Minnesota voters.

The 14th Amendment case I want to succeed is the one filed by a group of Republicans in Colorado. Their expert witness analyzed Trump's speech on Jan. 6th. There needs to be a serious consequence for a President spewing hateful rhetoric in order to incite violence.

JMO

During a speech near the White House earlier on Jan. 6, Trump also repeated his baseless allegations that the 2020 election was fraudulent and said, "If you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."

Simi cited Trump's comments that day in his testimony on Tuesday: "For far-right extremists, there's a clear message that fighting was the clear message. Not being peaceful."
